Smooth running
Is it ever a good idea to go into business with someone else? Is it better to set up a business with friends or family, or
to take all the responsibility and the rewards yourself? Let’s take a quick look at some of the advantages and
disadvantages of partnering or going solo.
Going into business with a friend sounds like a good idea in theory, but is often a spectacularly bad one in practice. For
one thing, it never does any relationship good when money comes into it and all businesses are about the bottom line –
money. T here’s also the matter of ego. If one partner thinks they’re the person with drive and vision, then the other
partner might find they are getting left out of important decision-making. Perhaps the most famous illustration of
this kind of situation is the story of “the two Steves” – Jobs and Wozniak. Steve Wozniak was the geeky tech guy and
Steve Jobs was the one with vision and drive. T ogether they set up Apple and were the first to develop a personal
computer, but their hugely different personalities led them to end their partnership. It should be noted that they both
finished their business relationship as very wealthy men.
How about a good old-fashioned family business? T here are plenty of family businesses which run very smoothly, so it
can’t all be bad, right? T he problem is that when it goes wrong, it can go very wrong. A good example is the Gucci
family – the founders of the famous fashion house. T hey had been running a luxury luggage business in Italy since the
beginning of the 20 th century, but it wasn’t until their company hit the big time in the fashion world that the cracks
started to show. T he bitter fighting between various branches of the family was so vicious that it eventually led to
murder!
It looks like we’re back where we started then. Perhaps the only safe way to go into business is on your own. T here’s
no one to hold you back or, indeed, stab you in the back. After all, some of the richest men in the world are business
entrepreneurs who built their own empires – people like Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates. In the end, it doesn’t matter what
business model you choose – just make sure it’s one you can handle.
