Ariel puzzle

Another old puzzle from Victorian era. I

made this puzzle according the drawing from
the book “Puzzles old and new” by professor
Hoffmann. A nice but forgotten puzzle. You
can see an original antique example from
here.

I made some small changes for making easily

in my workshop. I made the base of the
puzzle from olive tree and other parts are
from beech. You can make this puzzle with a
few hand tools. If you are good about solving
string puzzles, this puzzle may be easy for
you. But for a lot of people may be very
confusing.

How to make your own puzzle,

First, you must prepare your puzzle pieces.

Base 100x90x6 mm you need 1 pcs
Piece 2 35x20x10 mm you need 2 pcs
Piece 2 17x20x10 mm you need 2 pcs
Piece 4 beads Diameter must be bigger than corner hole diameters
Piece 5 bead or something similar

For preparing your wooden parts you can use drawings given at the end of this document. I printed
them and used them as a template for cutting my puzzle pieces and marking hole centers. Drawings
are 1:1 scale. If you want use them you can print without scaling and use them. Or you can modify
dimensions and make your own puzzle according to your materials.
You can find beads from craft stores. Sometimes I visit craft stores and buy beads, wooden rings,
metal rings etc. This small things are very useful for puzzle craft. In my workshop I have a big box
of beads, rings etc.

After you must make the assembly of wooden part of the puzzle,
For this you must firs glue together piece 1 and piece 2 and after you must glue them together to the
base. Piece with hole will be at inside.

After gluing all pieces together, before making rope arrangement you must finish wooden part with
your favorite method (oil finish, lacquer, varnish etc.)

Before assembly I prepared my white ropes and my red rope. I fixed two wooden bead to the end of
the two rope. I fixed both end of the red rope to the bead.
Fist step is arranging white ropes.

Rope lengths can change according to your dimensions, bead rope thickness etc. But approximately
white ropes are220 mm and red rope is340 mm. You can cut a little longer and after assembly you
can cut excess.

You can arrange them as seen on the photo and fix other beads to the other end of the ropes.

View from backside.

Now you can arrange red rope in same time this is the solution of the puzzle. Don't twist white or
red rope for solving puzzle correctly. In other case you will have a lot of knot.

Take the rope from back side and go from same side hole,
Pass the rope over a bead and pull it back,

You will obtain this,

Make same for the other bead,

You will obtain this,

Now you must start with the other end of the red rope and make same things for oter side of the
puzzle,

In this case the back side looks as seen on the photo,

For first step of this side take the red

loop between two white rope,
After passing the red loop over one bead your puzzle will look like this,

Finished puzzle after passing the loop over second bead and it's back side,
