BRIEF INTRODUCTION
In all technical job, it is very important to know how to measure the length, width and
height of the given task. This topic will discuss the different types and function/use of each
measuring tools that are important in electrical works.

ACTIVITIES
Activity 1: Direction: Read the important information about the use and function of each
measuring tools.

System of measurements
Units Units
Millimeter (mm) Inch/inches(in)
Metric system Centimeter (cm) English system Foot/feet (ft)
Meter (M) Yard/yards(yd)
Kilometre (Km) Mile/miles(mi)

Micro meter- is used to measure the diameter of

wire/conductors in circular mils, threads of screws and other
small measurements. It is sometimes can read millimeter only,
depending on the country who developed.
Wire gauge – is used in determining the size of conductors.
The gauge ranges from 0-60 AWG (American Wire Gauge).

Pull-Push Rule- is a measuring tool used to measure length of an

object in centimetre and inches. some of the pull push rule are designed
with englsih and meric system
Vernier Caliper – can take both inside and outside measurements.
Callipers are used to accurately measure the distance between two
sides of something. Some vernier caliper can measure both English
and Metric system
Ruler - Professionals use rulers every single day to help with their
work. Whether it is an architect using a ruler to help to
design a building, or a construction worker determining
if his work is straight, rulers are going to be important.
Most of the rulers are designed with English and metric
system.
Measuring tape- This is likely the most typical type of
measuring device that you will think of when someone
brings up a measuring tool. Measuring tape is a simple
tool that will help you to measure the length of something

Activity 2: Directions: After you read the different types and function of each measuring
tools, identify all those measuring tools that can measure English system and the tools that
can measure metric system. Write on your sheet of paper
Activity 3: Conversion units
Metric to English
1 mm = 0.00394 in
1 cm = 0.0394 in = 0.033 ft
1m = 39.37 in = 3.28 ft
1 km = 3280.83 ft = 0.621 mi
25.4 mm = 2.54 cm = 1 in
304.8 mm = 30.48 cm= 0.3048 m = 1 ft

Sample computations: Metric to Metric English to English

385.6 cm = ______m? 94 in = ft in?

385.6 cm x 1 m = 385.6m = 3.856 m 94 in x 1 ft = 94 ft = 7 ft 10 in

1m 100 cm 100 1 12 in 12

Convert the following units

1. 50. 4 mm = ______ in? 4. 3 in = _______cm?
2. 2 ft = ______ in? 5. 1 foot = ______in?
3. 10 cm = ______mm?

REMEMBER
Try to step back in time and imagine a world without measuring tools, like people in
ancient times are using parts of their body to measure different things, like using their thumb
to measure an inch. That’s why measuring tools are invented to accurately measure
everything, like wire gauge measures the wire size, micrometer measures mils, this are the
importance of having measuring tools.

CHECKING YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Directions: Answer the following questions based on what you learned about this lesson
and explain briefly.
1. What measuring tools you are going to use if you are measuring a block of wood with
the maximum length of 6 ft.?
2. If you are going to measure diameter of wire/conductors, what is the proper
measuring tools you are going to used? And why?
3. What are the important things you learned in this lesson?

POST-TEST
Directions: answer the following problem by converting each given measurement.
Convert Millimeter to Inches Fill in the correct answers
1. 12.7 mm = 6. 4 ft = inches?
2. 19.05 mm = 7. 20 cm = mm?
3. 25.4 mm = 8. 2 meter = ft?
4. 38.1 mm = 9. 10 mm = cm?
5. 50.4 mm = 10. 24 inches = ft?
