It’s More Fun in the Philippine Wildlife

The Philippines is an archipelago composed of 7,641 islands, and brimming in these

islands are wildlife that we cherish and protect. Wildlife, according to the Merriam-Webster
dictionary is any living thing that is neither human nor domesticated, and in the Philippines,
wildlife flourishes in each of the country’s corners. Philippine Habitat, ecosystems, and
landscapes house species that are exclusive only to the Philippines while also contributing to its
overall biodiversity.
The Philippines is great in terms of biodiversity, because of its geographical isolation, diverse
habitats, and endemism the Philippines has flora and fauna that thrive within its habitats whether
on land or sea. In addition, the Philippines is one of the 18 megadiverse countries in the world, it
contains two-thirds of the earth's biodiversity and between 70% and 80% of the world's plant and
animal species, hence making the Philippines a great hotspot for unique wildlife in the world.
Wildlife in the Philippines flourishes with different animals and plants, it features 12,000
different species of plants, 560 recognized bird species, 180 species of terrestrial mammals, 250
reptiles, 400 species of coral, and 1,000 different fishes, in addition, the Philippines has a very
high bird endemism rate, this means that many bird species can only be found in the country. The
country also has 50.9% of native species of flora around the world having a high endemic rate of
plants in the world (philippineplants.org),
Meanwhile, marine wildlife is no different from wildlife on land, the Philippines is home to a
UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Tubbataha Reef a coral reef that houses many marine animals
in the Philippines. In addition, megafauna in the Philippine marine life can be observed, some
examples are the dugong (Dugong dugon), manta rays (Mobula sp.), and whale sharks
(Rhincodon typus) can be seen in select marine areas in the Philippines.
The Philippines has a diverse inland and marine wildlife as we speak, but along with that the
Philippines also has endangered species within it, famous examples of endangered species within
the Philippines are the: pawikan (Eretmochelys imbricata), the Philippine monkey-eating eagle
(Pithecophaga jefferyi) and whale sharks (R. typus) are considered in the Philippine wildlife.
Moreover, endangered plant species in the Philippines such as the: Saipan mango (Mangifera
odorata), (Kibatalia puberula) and (Phalaenopsis lindenii) are some examples of endangered
flora in the Philippines.
Moving on, many methods of conservation are done to protect endangered species or wildlife
from extinction in the Philippines. Laws such as the Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources
Conservation and Protection Act of 2001 are applied to conserve habitats and wildlife resources
in the Philippines so that many species of plant and animal life are conserved and are kept safe
from, man-made activities that destroy the environment leading to the loss of habitats that houses
plant and animals.
Furthermore, Preserving biodiversity and maintaining the balance of ecosystems depend on
protecting endangered species. Strict conservation regulations, protected areas, and habitat
restoration programs are all part of this. Scientific research, public awareness campaigns,
educational initiatives, and cooperation between local communities, NGOs, and governments are
crucial. Protecting endangered species and maintaining Earth's diversity of life can be
accomplished through a comprehensive strategy that includes legislative actions, habitat
protection, public involvement, and scientific knowledge.
To sum things up, the Philippines is a global hotspot for biodiversity, whether it is from the land
or sea, wildlife is brimming with diversity, but along with that is the endangerment of species
flora or fauna, and with that said, we must do what we must to conserve habitats and ecosystems
so that these animals and plants can flourish, making the country as biodiverse as it is, or even
improve. “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” as we say but it’s more fun if we appreciate the
wildlife within it.
