Word Processor :
A word processor is used to create almost any kind of
text document . It offers different types of formatting
option to enhance the appearance of text or documents
and give them a professional look . It is used to create ,
edit and format the text document .
The salient features of a word processor program are

Different Word Processing Applications

Word processors are generally used by everyone especially students and professionals.
Apart from MS Word ,there are plenty of word processing applications available , as
listed below :

• Notepad

• WordPad

• Google Docs

• Open Office Writer

• Apache Open Office Writer


Notepad
It is a very simple word processor , also known as text-editor . It
is used to create , edit , open and read files . Basic formatting
such as bold , italic and underline can be applied to the text in
Notepad . It is the default accessory of the Windows operating
system .
To launch the notepad on your computer , simply click on
START > ALL PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > NOTEPAD .
To save the notepad file , click on File and then Save .
WordPad
It is also a very basic word processor that allows creating , editing and saving of
text . It provides more formatting features than Notepad such as the user can
insert pictures and apply text formatting . It is more advanced than a Notepad
but less than MS Word . It is the default accessory of Windows operating
system .
To launch the WordPad on your computer , simply click on START > ALL
PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > WORDPAD . To save the WordPad file ,
click on File and then Save .
Google Docs
Google Docs is an online word processor
capable of performing various tasks such as
creating and editing of a document in both
private and public mode . Google Document
works similarly to other word processors but it
is available online for use . It functions same as
MS Word .
Apache Open Office Writer / LibreOffice
Like Microsoft Word , LibreOffice and Apache Open Office Writer
are advance word processing applications and both are different
packages . Open Office Writer is the part of Apache Open Office
suite whereas LibreOffice Writer is the part of LibreOffice suite .
Both are the open-source software and freely available on the
Internet .

Writer
Open Office Writer is the word processor component of Apache
Open Office , available free of cost . It is an Open source
software and freely available on the Internet .
Writer provides these important features :
• Page layout methods , including styles , frames , columns
and tables
• Document digital signatures
• Templates and styles
• Built-in drawing tools
• Mail Merge
Getting Start with Open Office Writer

To start Open Office click on


Start Button from the list , click
on Open Office . After Apache
Open Office is opened . Select
File . Choose New < Text
Document on the Menu bar .
You can press Ctrl + N
shortcut key .
Elements of Open Office Writer
The main elements of Writer are :

• Title Bar
• Menu Bar
• Workspace
 Slide bar
 Toolbar
 Standard Toolbar
 Formatting Toolbar

 Ruler
 Status Bar
Saving a Document
To save the document in Writer , Click on File Tab . Click on the Save Button
. Enter the file name in the File Name text box in Save As dialog box . Click
on Save button .

Closing a Document
We can a document by clicking on File > Close . Writer will ask you to save
the document , if it is not saved by us . Click on the Save button to save the
document for the future use . Otherwise , click on Don’t Save button .
Opening an Existing Document

Click on the File tab . Click on the Open


button . The Open dialog box appears .
Locate the required file from the Open
dialog box . Click on the Open button .
Exiting Writer
To exit Writer , click on the
Close (X) button on the
top-right corner of the
Writer window or click on
File > Exit Open Office
Writer or press Ctrl + Q .
Cursor and Mouse Pointer
A cursor looks like a pointed arrow that moves as per the
direction of the mouse following the path of a user’s
hand . It appears as an I-Cursor when positioned over the
selected text or taken over the text . When hovered over a
hyperlink , a cursor appears as a pointing hand . It is used
to activate or select elements on the screen . It performs
different actions , such as selecting a data / file , dragging a
file to another location etc.
