 Precautions to be taken before commissioning a new equipment?

1
-An important part of the commissioning of a machine is to inspect and verify that the required
documentation and submittals are present. Without them, you will not be able to test the machine
or verify that the machine is safe to operate. The commissioning team is going to identify hazards
and risks, provide mitigation methods to perform the work safely. The operating team are often the
LOTO (lock Out Tag Out system) and PTW authority. A commissioning checklist is used to
ensure the safety and functionality of new or modified systems in oil and gas plant. Efficiently
validate the performance of newly installed equipments by using a comprehensive checklist. After
pre-commissioning follows commissioning, the main difference is that during pre-commissioning,
dry runs and trial runs with test fluids (e.g., water, azote gas) may occur. Still, during
commissioning, actual process fluids are introduced to process equipment.

 What is isolation and where to isolate if a pump needs maintenance work?

*These steps outline the necessary procedures to ensure the safety and proper handling of the
pump during maintenance work. Here is a summary of the steps in order:
A. Isolating the pump:
- Close the suction, discharge, recycle, casing drain, and vent line isolation valves.
- Attach "DO NOT OPERATE" isolation tags to all isolation valves.
- Disconnect the pump from local push buttons and breakers in the substation.
- Lock the motor breaker with the help of an electrician.
- Attach "DO NOT OPERATE" tags to the local push button and breaker lock.
B. Drain the pump:
- Completely drain the pump.
- If it's a chemical pump, flush it with water until the water runs clear.
- If it's a hydrocarbon pump, purge it with N2.
C. Blind the lines:
- Blind the suction, discharge, and recycle lines.
- If the pump casing drain is connected to a closed drain system, blind the drain line.
- If the pump casing vent line is connected to the flare system, blind the vent line.
- Attach "DO NOT OPERATE" isolation tags to all blinds.
D. Hand over to maintenance:
- Once blinding is complete, the pump is ready to be handed over to maintenance.
- Maintenance can perform repair work such as mechanical seal replacement, impeller
repair, bearing replacement, or removal of the pump to the workshop.
 Challenges you had in previous work place?
E. Permit to work types and specifications
1. Cold work permit: Cold work permits are used in hazardous maintenance work that does not
involve “hot work”. Cold work permits are issued when there is no reasonable source of
ignition, and when all contact with harmful substances has been eliminated or appropriate
precautions taken.
2. Hot work permit: This type of permit is used to authorize work that involves open flames,
sparks, or heat-producing processes, such as welding, cutting, grinding, drilling, soldering,
brazing, torch-applied.
3. Working at heights permit:
4. Confined space permit:
5. Electrical work permit:
6. Electrical isolation permit:
7. Lift permit:
8. Excavation permit:
9. Breaking Containment permit(penetration):

F. Preventive and corrective maintenance

What is preventive maintenance?

Preventive maintenance is an equipment maintenance strategy based on replacing, or restoring, an
asset at a fixed interval regardless of its condition. Scheduled restoration tasks and replacement tasks
are examples of preventive maintenance tasks.
Benefits of preventive maintenance:

- Extended equipment life

- Decreased downtime
- Safe and efficient equipment operation
1) Preventive maintenance for pumps:
- Check exterior for leaks, corrosion, cracks, debris and scale.
- Inspect gaskets for oil leaks.
- Check mechanical seals for leaks.
- Check for excessive vibration and unusual noises, for example, we may be able to detect a
problem with a pillow block bearing by listening to it by putting a screwdriver to our ear (and the
bearing). This method may give us a warning period of a few days.
- Check for oil discoloration or foaming.
- Change the lubrication oil.
- Grease the motor bearings.
- Inspect shaft pump alignment.
2) Preventive maintenance for valves:
1. Onsite inspections;
-Touch inspection: Touch around the valve's body and pipe connections with a clean, dry cloth. If the
cloth gets wet, the valve may be leaking.
-Sound inspection: If possible, listen to the check valve operating in a quiet area. Normally
functioning check valves do not produce sounds.
2. Typical valve testing procedure:
This requires all valves to be taken out of service on set intervals and inspected. The valves are taken
apart and any worn components are replaced along with installing new spare parts. The valves are then
returned to service. A typical hydrostatic valve test follows these basic steps:

3
- The valve body is filled with the testing fluid at the specified temperature.
- The specified pressure is applied for the specified length of time (usually at least 1 minute).
- Leakage is measured across the valve element of interest (stem, seat, closure mechanism) using
both measuring instruments and visual examination. Most valve standards specify that no visually
detectable leakage is allowed.
- A visual inspection is performed to ensure the valve has not been damaged during the testing
procedure.

3. Preventive maintenance for gas turbines:

preventive maintenance involves regularly scheduled inspections, tests, and maintenance activities
performed on gas turbines to prevent or mitigate potential issues before they result in equipment
failure. This may include activities such as cleaning, lubrication, filter replacement, and visual
inspections to identify wear and tear.
