Communication in Groups
The sheer number of people in a group affects the amount of communication. Consider the difference
between communication between two friends and communication in a group of five people. When friends
talk, there are two people sending and receiving messages. In a group of five, there are five people doing
the same thing. Each idea that is expressed must be understood by four others, who may also choose to
respond. Consequently, the greater number of people in a group, the fewer contributions an individual may
make. Because there are disadvantages to large groups, you might assume that small groups would be the
most effective. However, groups can be too small as well as 100 people large. With too few members, a
group has limited resources, which eliminates a primary advantage of groups for decision making. Also,
members may be unwilling to disagree or criticize each other's ideas. I believe that five to seven members
is the ideal size for a small group.
1. According to the passage, in large groups …….
A. are always more successful than large groups in terms of decision making
A. the number of people in a small group must not be more than five
B. small groups are better as members of them have a chance to criticize each other
C. everyone should listen to each other's ideas no matter how large the group is

The first telescopes built in the early 1600s were very primitive inventions allowing the user to see around
3-times further than the naked eye. It was not too long, however, until Italian astronomer Galileo heard
about the invention ‘that through use of correctly-positioned lenses, allowed people to see things a long
way away. The tools used in the manufacturing of the first refracting telescope were all Galileo needed to
know and within 24 hours he had developed a better one. In fact, the process of improvements Galileo
made on Lippershey’s telescope was quite dramatic. Whereas the original version had a magnification of 3,
the new telescope had a magnification of around 30. Galileo achieved these extraordinary results by
figuring out the combination of the positions of the lenses and also by making his own lenses that were of
better quality. Although he originally thought they were stars, the better quality lenses – and some
scientific analysis – enabled him to eventually use his telescopes to see the moons of Jupiter. Galileo’s
refracting telescopes – so-called due to the way they handled the light that passed through them – were
the standard at that time.

Six out of ten CV’s which are prepared by Information Technology professionals fail to meet the basic
standards and are turned down without even being read fully, according to a recruitment company. As a
consequence, thousands of candidates are excluding themselves from attractive job opportunities.
Although the company handles over 60,000 CV’s per year, it estimates that at least 60% would not be
admitted if they were sent directly to potential clients due to basic errors.
The company Marketing Director said, “Sadly it’s often the most highly qualified candidates whose CV’s are
so poorly constructed that they are literally dead on arrival. Attractive job opportunities in the IT industry
often generate intense competition and there is often little to choose between the candidates”.
“Advice on the presentation format of CV’s in relation to the requirements that they are being submitted
for should be an Industry standard so as to add real value to the candidates that you are representing and
indeed to fulfil your professional obligations to your clients”.
“Writing a CV can be extremely difficult and too often a CV turns out to be a generic overview including a
lot of information that is irrelevant. People should remember that an employer typically spends between
15 and 30 seconds scanning each CV and you have that one chance to make an impression”.
“A good CV is more than just documentation of your career path; it is a marketing tool designed to present
your professional career experience according to the new job specification. It should also include details of
past professional successes that effectively demonstrate your ability to undertake the job responsibilities
outlined”.
3. The Marketing Director suggests that candidates ought to pay attention to ...
A. CV’s presentation
B. other companies
C. other competitors
4. The Marketing Director says that very often CV’s include ...
A. necessary details
