Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.
2 After all, more than 76,000 ancient beads have been found in the
village located about 20 km from Sungai Petani, Kedah. In fact, 5
the villagers have been collecting these beads in the compounds
of their homes for more than 20 years.
4 The other jars were handed over to the Sungai Mas Archaeology
Museum located in the village about five years ago for a token
sum of cash.
8 The beads were used as barter items to exchange for goods and
products by traders from the southeast coast of India who called 25
at the port in those days.
9 “We have been collecting the manik (beads) which could be found
in everyone’s compound for years but we had no idea they are
valuable ancient beads until they (the authorities) told us,” Harun
grinned. 30

“For more than 2000 years, they were traded all over the globe
13
and deserved the title of Champion Trade Beads,” said
Kamaruddin whose field of study includes ancient beads.
14 45
He said the beads were first made in a port city on the southeast
coast of India known today as Arikamedu. In time, some of the
bead makers left to expand their trade.
15
From the first century A.D. until around 1200, some bead makers
were living in Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.
16 50
Production was so enormous that the Indo-Pacific beads
accounted for two-thirds of the beads excavated in archaeological
sites in the Philippines.
17
Slowly, the industries outside India closed down but the bead
makers stayed at Arikamedu until the 1600s when they moved to 55
a village not too far north called Papanaidupet.
18
They are still making the beads, including some of the smallest in
the world.
