Arun Goel appointed Election Commissioner Day after voluntary retirement from IAS
• President Droupadi Murmu appointed retired IAS officer Arun Goel as an Election Commissioner,
a day after the former Punjab cadre officer took voluntary retirement from the service. The post of one
Election Commissioner in the three-member commission has been vacant since May 15, when then-Election
Commissioner Rajiv Kumar took charge as Chief Election Commissioner upon the retirement of Sushil
Chandra from the post.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) is a constitutional body. It was established by the Constitution
of India to conduct and regulate elections in the country. Article 324 of the Constitution provides that the
power of superintendence, direction, and control of elections to parliament, state legislatures, the office
of the president of India, and the office of vice-president of India shall be vested in the election
commission. Thus, the Election Commission is an all-India body in the sense that it is common to both the
Central government and the state governments. The body administers elections to the Lok Sabha, Rajya
Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, State Legislative Councils and the offices of the President and Vice President
of the country. The Election Commission operates under the authority of Constitution per Article 324,
and subsequently enacted Representation of the People Act. Rajiv Kumar is the current as and the 25th Chief
Election Commissioner of India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveils India’s first Passenger Drone “Varuna”
• Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unveiled Varuna, India’s first passenger drone. PM Modi is seen
watching the demonstration of the drone. Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that the current government
has ensured last-mile delivery of services with the help of technology, including drones.
• The makers of this indigenous pilot-less ‘Varuna’ drone startup Sagar Defence Engineering
demonstrated this in his presence. This ‘Varuna’ drone has been designed and developed by a startup and has
the capacity to carry one person inside. Varuna, India’s first drone that can carry a human payload, has
a range of 25 km.
India ranks high in climate protection, bags 8th position in Climate Change Performance Index
• India climbed two spots to bag eighth position out of 63 in the Climate Change Performance Index
(CCPI) 2023. The jump can be attributed to India’s low emissions and the increasing use of renewable energy.
The report was published by three environmental non-governmental organisations that track climate
performance of the European Union and 59 countries, which together account for over 92 per cent of the
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the world.
• The rankings by Germanwatch, NewClimate Institute and the Climate Action Network are based
on how well the countries are doing to halve their emissions by 2030 – an essential aspect to keep the
1.5-degree Celsius goal within reach and prevent dangerous climate change.
• The latest report of CCPI, released at COP27 in November, shows Denmark, Sweden, Chile and Morocco
as the only four small countries that were ranked above India as 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th respectively. The
first, second and third ranks were not awarded to any country. In effect therefore, India’s rank is the
best among all large economies.
PM Modi dedicates 600 MW Kameng hydro power project in Arunachal Pradesh to nation
• Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the 600 MW Kameng hydropower project in Arunachal
Pradesh’s West Kameng district to the nation. “Commissioning of the sixth hydropower plant in the North
East i.e. 600 MW Kameng Hydro Power Station in Arunachal Pradesh will be a major step towards fulfilling
Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) of the Government of India pledged under Paris Agreement 2015.
The project has two dams and a powerhouse having 4 units of 150 MW to generate 3,353 million units of
electricity.
Telangana, UNICEF to set up India’s first Y-Hub for youth and adolescent in Hyderabad
• Continuing efforts to strengthen the innovation ecosystem in Telangana, the State government signed a
Statement of Intent with UNICEF India to soon set up an exclusive innovation hub in Hyderabad to
foster innovation and entrepreneurial skills in the youth and the adolescent.
• Named Y-Hub, this will be India’s first youth and adolescent focused innovation centre to promote
problem-solving, creativity and design thinking, 21st century skills, innovation and entrepreneurship
among young people in the State. Y-Hub, which will provide access to resources and services including
mentorship, skilling programmes, workshops, bootcamps, co-creating spaces and funding opportunities for
young innovators, is also part of the YuWaah (Generation Unlimited India) initiative of UNICEF.
UNICEF, originally called the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund in full, now
officially United Nations Children’s Fund, is an agency of the United Nations responsible for providing
humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide. The agency is among the most widespread and
recognizable social welfare organizations in the world, with a presence in 192 countries and territories. UNICEF’s
activities include providing immunizations and disease prevention, administering treatment for children and mothers
with HIV, enhancing childhood and maternal nutrition, improving sanitation, promoting education, and providing
emergency relief in response to disasters. UNICEF is the successor of the United Nations International
Children’s Emergency Fund, created on 11 December 1946, in New York, by the U.N. Relief Rehabilitation
Administration to provide immediate relief to children and mothers affected by World War II. Catherine Mary
Russell is an American who is currently serving as Executive Director of UNICEF.
Army installs tallest Iconic National Flag in hilly Doda district, J&K
• In Jammu and Kashmir, Army installed the tallest ‘Iconic National Flag’ in the hilly Doda district.
The tricolour which has been installed on a 100 feet-high pole, the highest Tricolour in the Doda district.
The Flag is a tribute to the countless soldiers of the Chenab Region who have made the ultimate
sacrifice while safeguarding the unity and integrity of the nation.
The Indian Army is the land-based branch and the largest component of the Indian Armed Forces. The
President of India is the Supreme Commander of the Indian Army, and its professional head is the
Chief of Army Staff (COAS), who is a four-star general. Two officers have been conferred with the rank of
field marshal, a five-star rank, which is a ceremonial position of great honour. Sam Manekshaw was the
first field marshal of India, and was conferred the rank on 1 January 1973. The second was Kodandera
M. Cariappa, who was conferred the rank on 15 January 1986. The Indian Army was formed in 1895
alongside the long established presidency armies of the East India Company, which too were absorbed
into it in 1903. General Manoj Pande is an Indian Army General serving as the 29th and the current
Chief of the Army Staff. He is the first officer from the Corps of Engineers to become the Army Chief.
The Aam Aadmi Party (Common Man’s Party) is a political party in India. It was founded in November
2012 by Arvind Kejriwal and his then-companions, following the 2011 Indian anti-corruption movement.
AAP is currently the governing party in the Indian states of Delhi and Punjab. On 10 April 2023, AAP
was officially granted the status of national party by ECI. The party’s election symbol is a broom.
Tamil Nadu’s Cumbum grapes get Geographical Indication tag
• Cumbum grapes just received the Geographical Indication (GI) label. This is the famous Cumbum
Panneer Thratchai from Tamil Nadu, commonly known as Cumbum grapes. The Cumbum valley, located in
Tamil Nadu’s Western Ghats, is regarded as the “Grapes City of South India” and grows the PanneerThratchai.
• This variety, sometimes known as Muscat Hamburg, accounts for over 85% of the grape-growing
areas in Tamil Nadu. Theni district is one of PanneerThratchai’s highest grape-producing locations. However,
the ‘Panneer’ type is most closely linked with Cumbum Valley, where the agricultural area spans over 2,000
acres across ten villages. The Cumbum region’s agroclimate and soil conditions are ideal for the cultivation of
the Muscat varietal.
Chhattisgarh’s Nagri Dubraj rice variety gets GI tag
• The Geographical Indication Registry granted Chhattisgarh’s aromatic rice, Nagri Dubraj, a geographical
indication (GI) tag facilitating the brand to get a unique identity and a wide market. Morena and Rewa
Mango (both Madhya Pradesh) and Nagri Dubraj have been given GI tags.
• It will give a new identity to the products in the national and international market. A GI tag is given to an
entrepreneur or a group of businessmen of a particular area, state, or country. The GI tags are issued as per
the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, of 1999.
Chhattisgarh was formed on 1 November 2000 by partitioning 10 Chhattisgarhi and 6 Gondi speaking
southeastern districts of Madhya Pradesh. It is a land locked state of India. The capital city is Raipur.
Biswabhusan Harichandan is present Governor of Chhattisgarh.
Arunachal Pradesh (“land of dawn-lit mountains”) is a state in Northeast India. It borders the states
of Assam and Nagaland to the south. It shares international borders with Bhutan in the west, Myanmar in
the east, and a disputed border with China in the north at the McMahon Line. Itanagar is the state
capital of Arunachal Pradesh. Lieutenant General Kaiwalya Trivikram Parnaik is the present governor.
Vizag Tech Park: Adani Group to set up India’s first Integrated Data Centre – Andhra CM

• The Adani Group started work on building India’s first integrated data centre and technology
business park at Vizag in Andhra Pradesh. The park will host a 200+ MW of data centre capacity, powered
with up to 100 per cent renewable energy, and also houses a skill development centre. It will be the first of the
3 technology zones planned in Vizag and one of the largest hyper-scale parks in India, said billionaire
Gautam Adani-led company.
Karnataka DGP Praveen Sood appointed as new CBI director
• IPS officer Praveen Sood appointed the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for
a period of two years by the high-powered selection committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra
Modi. Sood, a 1986-batch IPS officer, was appointed Karnataka DGP in January 2020, superseding 1985-batch
IPS officer Ashit Mohan Prasad.
Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is the premier investigating police agency in India. It provides
assistance to the Central Vigilance Commission and Lokpal. It functions under the superintendence of the
Deptt. of Personnel, Ministry of Personnel, Pension & Public Grievances, Government of India - which falls
under the prime minister’s office. However for investigations of offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act, its
superintendence vests with the Central Vigilance Commission. It is also the nodal police agency in India which
coordinates investigation on behalf of Interpol Member countries. During the period of World War II,
a Special Police Establishment (SPE) was constituted in 1941 in the Department of War of the British
India to enquire into allegations of bribery and corruption in the war related procurements. Later on it
was formalized as an agency of the Government of India to investigate into allegations of corruption
in various wings of the Government of India by enacting the Delhi Special Police Establishment (DSPE) Act, 1946.
The CBI is not a statutory body but derives its power to investigate from the Delhi Special Police
Establishment Act, 1946. The establishment of the CBI was recommended by the Santhanam Committee
on Prevention of Corruption (1962–1964). In 1963, the CBI was established by the Government of India
with a view to investigate serious crimes related to defence of India, corruption in high places, serious
fraud, cheating and embezzlement and social crime, particularly of hoarding, black-marketing and profiteering in
essential commodities, having all-India and inter-state ramifications.
Central Vista Redevelopment Project refers to the ongoing redevelopment to revamp the Central
Vista, India’s central administrative area located near Raisina Hill, New Delhi. The area was originally
designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker during British colonial rule and was retained by
Government of India after independence. Scheduled between 2020 and 2026, the project as of 2020 aims to
revamp a 3 km (1.9 mi) long Kartvyapath between Rashtrapati Bhavan and India Gate, convert North
and South Blocks to publicly accessible museums by creating a new common Central Secretariat to
house all ministries, a new Parliament building near the present one with increased seating capacity for future
expansion, new residence and office for the Vice-President and the Prime Minister near the North Block and South
Block and convert some of the older structures into museums. Shapoorji Pallonji was awarded the tender for
the redevelopment of the Central Vista Avenue in January 2021.
‘Sengol’, a historic sceptre installed in new Parliament building
• Union home minsiter Amit Shah said a golden sceptre called ‘Sengol’ would be installed at a prominent
spot in the new Parliament building, which is inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The
sceptre, or the ‘Sengol’, is a significant item; it was presented to Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime
Minister, as a symbol of the transfer of power from the British. The word ‘Sengol’ is believed to have
been derived from the Tamil word ‘semmai’, which refers to excellence.
• Shah emphasised the role played by the ‘Sengol’ sceptre in the transfer of power and said that on being
told of its importance (and after due verification), Modi ensured it would hold pride of place in the new
Parliament building. The importance of the ‘Sengol’ sceptre emerged when Lord Mountbatten, the
then Viceroy of British India, asked Nehru about a symbolic transfer of power.
Suriname is a country in northern South America. It is the smallest sovereign state in South America.
Paramaribo is the capital and largest city of Suriname. The Surinamese dollar has been the currency of
Suriname since 2004. Chandrikapersad Santokhi is the current President of Suriname, since 2020.
First unit of maiden nuclear power plant in Haryana to become operational by June 2028
• The first unit of the maiden nuclear power plant in Haryana – coming up in Gorakhpur village of
Fatehabad district – is likely to commence operations in June 2028. Kaushal directed the power utility
officers to expedite the relocation of high-tension power lines and provide a 33 KV power connection for the
plant site from an alternative source in order to ensure uninterrupted supply to the project. Former Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh had laid the foundation stone for the 2,800-megawatt nuclear power
plant in Fatehabad nine years ago.
India, Argentina agrees for bilateral exchange of young researchers and Startups in
Biotechnology and Agriculture field
• India and Argentina have agreed to a bilateral exchange of young researchers and Startups,
particularly in the field of Biotechnology and Agriculture. The two countries also decided to hold
comprehensive talks between delegations comprising academia, Research, and Development Institutes, and
Industry in the field of Science and Technology and Biotechnology.
• The Indian delegation evinced interest in collaborating in Geospatial technology, Quantum Computation, and
Bio-Enzymes. It was pointed out that India has the world’s third largest Startup ecosystem and there
is huge potential for joint studies and collaboration at various levels such as institutional, universities, and
multilateral fora. India is the 4th largest trading partner of Argentina, with bilateral trade touching a
historic peak of 6.4 billion US dollar in the year 2022, recording a growth rate of 12 percent over 2021.

in South America after Brazil. Buenos is the capital and primate city of Argentina. Sovereignty over
the Falkland Islands is disputed by Argentina and the United Kingdom. The peso is the currency of
Argentina. Alberto Fernandez has been serving as President of Argentina since 2019. Diego Maradona
and Lionel Messi from Argentina are among the best players in the football game’s history.
Bhaderwah Rajma & Ramban Sulai Honey of Jammu and Kashmir get GI Tag
• In Jammu and Kashmir, two world-famous local specialty products namely Bhaderwah Rajma and Ramban
Sulai Honey have earned coveted Geographical Indication (GI) Tag. The process for GI Tagging of these
products was initiated by the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Jammu.
• Now, only an authorized user has the exclusive rights to use the Geographical Indication in relation
to these products. This will prevent unauthorized use of these registered Geographical Indication goods by
third parties, and will boost exports and promote their brands at international level. GI tagging will also promote
economic prosperity of locals in the geographical territory and will act as a tool for social economic growth of the
producer.
Hyderabad gets India’s first solar roof cycling track
• Cycling in a big city can be a real challenge with the pollution, uncontrollable traffic and the risk of being
knocked down by passing cars. Now, Hyderabad is leading the way with a first-of-its-kind sustainable
solar roof cycling track near the Outer Ring Road
• Named Healthway, this 23-kilometre three-lane track has two stretches — 8.5 kilometres from Nanakramguda
to Telangana State Police Academy (TSPA) and 14.5 kilometres from Kollur to Narsingi— converging at
Narsingi Junction. Inspired by the South Korean bike highway with solar panels, the aim is to ensure
a better experience for cyclists.
Hyderabad is the capital and largest city of the Indian state of Telangana and the de jure capital of
Andhra Pradesh. It occupies on the Deccan Plateau along the banks of the Musi River, in the northern
part of South India. Hyderabad is situated on hilly terrain around artificial lakes, including the Hussain
Sagar lake, predating the city’s founding, in the north of the city centre. Relics of the Qutb Shahi and Nizam
rules remain visible today; the Charminar has come to symbolise the city. The formation of special economic
zones and HITEC City dedicated to information technology has encouraged leading multinationals to
set up operations in Hyderabad.

participated in the maiden trilateral Maritime Partnership Exercise
• Indian Navy’s indigenously built warship INS Sahyadri, mission deployed in Indo-Pacific,
participated in the maiden trilateral Maritime Partnership Exercise with the ships and aircraft from
the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and Indonesian Navy. The trilateral exercise provided an opportunity
for the three maritime nations to strengthen their partnership and improve their collective capability to support
a stable, peaceful and secure Indo-Pacific region.
• The exercise also provided the opportunity for the participating navies to benefit from each other’s
experience and expertise. Complex tactical and manoeuvring exercises, cross-deck visits and cross-deck
landings of integral helicopters were conducted for training of crew and enhancement of interoperability. INS
Sahyadri, the third ship of the indigenously designed and built Project-17 class multirole stealth
frigates was built at Mazagon Dock Ltd, Mumbai.
Goa’s Bebinca recently received the GI tag
• It is variedly called the Queen of Goan desserts, or the Emperor of Goan confection. It is a treasured
food souvenir. It is a dish that showcases Goa’s multi-cultural culinary history. And recently, bebinca got a
Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai. Bebinca
is a layered cake/pudding made with flour, coconut milk, and egg yolks. There is ghee for moistness,
palm jaggery for colour, and salt and nutmeg for flavouring. It is baked one layer at a time. It joins a list of other
GI tagged Goan food products like mancurad mango, cashew feni, Khola chilli, Harmal chilli, Moira banana,
and khaje.
India and UN launch joint capacity building initiative for Global South
• India and the United Nations launched a joint capacity-building initiative for the Global South. The
“India-UN Capacity Building Initiative” aims to share India’s development experiences, best practices
and expertise with partner countries in the Global South through capacity building and training programs.
• The initiative was announced at the India-UN for the Global South in New York. The India-UN initiative
also complements the India-UN partnership in the form of “India-UN Development Partnership Fund”
which has developed a portfolio of 75 development projects in 61 countries in the last 6 years.
Northeast India (officially the North Eastern Region (NER)) is the easternmost region of India
representing both a geographic and political administrative division of the country. It comprises eight
states—Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura (commonly
known as the “Seven Sisters”), and the “brother” state Sikkim. The Siliguri Corridor connects the
region to the rest of mainland India. The states of North Eastern Region are officially recognised under
the North Eastern Council (NEC), constituted in 1971 as the acting agency for the development of the
north eastern states. Long after induction of NEC, Sikkim formed part of the North Eastern Region as the
eighth state in 2002. Guwahati city in Assam is called the Gateway to the North East and is the largest
metropolis in North East India. The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region is a Government
of India ministry, established in September 2001, which functions as the nodal Department of the Central
Government to deal with matters related to the socio-economic development of the eight States of Northeast India.

Bihar caste survey released: EBCs form 36% of population, OBCs at 27.13%
• The Bihar government’s caste survey report, showed that extremely backward classes (EBCs) account
for 36.01 percent of the 13.07 crore population of the state. OBC Yadavs are the single biggest caste with
14.26 per cent. According to the survey, conducted in two phases, the Hindu population in the state is 81.99
percent and Muslim population is 17.7 percent.
• There were 2,146 people who did not mention any religion in the survey. Among social groups, OBCs are
27.12 percent of the state population and EBCs are 36.01 percent. The Scheduled Caste population is
19.65 percent, while the general category is 15.52 percent, with Brahmins leading the tally with 3.67
percent, closely followed by Rajputs at 3.45 percent. Nitish Kumar’s core constituency, Kurmis, are 2.87 per
cent, Kushwahas 4.27 percent and Dhanuks 2.16 percent.
Bihar is a state in eastern India. It is the third largest state by population, the 12th largest by area, and the 14th
largest by GDP in 2021. Bihar borders Uttar Pradesh to its west, Nepal to the north, the northern part of
West Bengal to the east, and Jharkhand to the south. The Bihar plain is split by the river Ganges, which flows
from west to east. On 15 November 2000, southern Bihar was ceded to form the new state of Jharkhand. Nitish Kumar
is serving as current Chief Minister of Bihar since 22 February 2015, having previous held the office from 2005 to
2014 and for a short period in 2000. Rajendra Arlekar is the current Governor of Bihar. As per the 2011 census,
among states, Bihar has the lowest literacy rate of 47% and highest in Kerala (male: 96.1%, female 92.1%).
Three indigenous products from Arunachal Pradesh receive (GI) tag
• Three indigenous products from Arunachal Pradesh – Yak Churpi, Khamti rice and Tangsa textile –
have been granted the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the GI Registry. Indian Council
of Agricultural Research’s National Research Centre (NRC) on Yak Director Dr Mihir Sarkar said that “Churpi”
is prepared from the milk of Arunachali yak, which is a unique yak breed found in West Kameng and Tawang
districts of Arunachal Pradesh.
• Yak Churpi is a fermented milk product made from the milk of Arunachali yak, a unique breed found
in the region. The product is expected to provide benefits to tribal herders against cold and hypoxia. Khaw Tai,
a chewy sticky rice variety, hails from the Namsai region and is cultivated by traditional Khampti tribal
farmers. The Tangsa Textile products crafted by the Tangsa tribe of Changlang district are renowned
for their exotic designs and vibrant colors.
Rajasthan is a state in northern India. It is the largest Indian state by area and the seventh largest by
population. It is on India’s northwestern side, where it comprises most of the wide and inhospitable Thar Desert
(also known as the Great Indian Desert) and shares a border with the Pakistani provinces of Punjab to the
northwest and Sindh to the west, along the Sutlej-Indus River valley. Kalraj Mishra is serving as the Governor
of Rajasthan.
Mohammed Faizal to continue as Lakshadweep MP as Supreme Court stays Kerala HC
order refusing to suspend conviction
• The Supreme Court stayed the Kerala High Court order which refused to suspend the conviction
of Mohammed Faizal, the disqualified Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Lakshadweep MP, in an
attempt to murder case.
• Issuing notice on Faizal’s appeal challenging the October 3 high court order, the bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy
and Sanjay Karol also directed that the Supreme Court’s August 22 order by which the matter was remanded
back to the high court while allowing him to continue as a Lok Sabha MP will become operational.
India launches ‘Operation Ajay’ to evacuate Indian national from Israel-Hamas conflict
zone
• India has launched Operation Ajay to facilitate the return from Israel of its citizens who wish to
return. On 7 October, the 2023 Israel–Hamas war began. External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar said,
special charter flights and other arrangements being put in place. He said, Government is fully committed to
the safety and well-being of Indian nationals abroad. Indian Embassy in Israel said, it has emailed the first
lot of registered Indian citizens for the special flight. It said, messages to other registered people will follow for
subsequent flights.
Israel is a country in the Middle East, Jerusalem is one of the oldest cities in the world, and is considered
holy to the three major Abrahamic religions—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Both Israel and the
Palestinian Authority claim Jerusalem as their capital, however, neither claim is widely recognized
internationally. Knesset is the unicameral national legislature of Israel. Israeli new shekel is the
currency of Israel. It is bordered by Lebanon to the north, by Syria to the northeast, by Jordan to the
east, by the Red Sea to the south, by Egypt to the southwest, by the Mediterranean Sea to the west, and
by the Palestinian territories – the West Bank along the east and the Gaza Strip along the southwest.
Isaac Herzog is serving as the current President of Israel since 7 July 2021. Benjamin Netanyahu is the
current Prime Minister of Israel.
Telangana becomes first state in India to provide potable water connection to every home
• Telangana is the first state in independent India to have launched a project called ‘Mission
Bhagiratha’ to provide a potable water connection to every home. Under Mission Bhagiratha, it
was conceived to provide 100 litres per capita per day (LPCD) treated and piped water to every
household in rural areas, 135 LPCD in municipalities and 150 LPCD in municipal corporations.

• Guidance, the nodal agency for investment promotion under the Department of Industries, Investment
Promotion and Commerce, government of Tamil Nadu, has received the prestigious United Nations
Promotion Award 2023, for excellence in scaling up energy transition investments at the 8th World
Investment Forum, held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, recently.
Arunachal Pradesh approves constitution of Special Tiger Protection Force for three
Tiger Reserves
• The Arunachal Pradesh State Cabinet approved the constitution of Special Tiger Protection Force
(STPF) in the State for three Tiger Reserves of the State namely- Namdapha, Pakke and Kamlang.
This decision will result in the creation of 336 regular posts in the state.
Arunachal Pradesh (“land of dawn-lit mountains”) is a state in Northeast India. It borders the states of
Assam and Nagaland to the south. It shares international borders with Bhutan in the west, Myanmar
in the east, and a disputed border with China in the north at the McMahon Line. Itanagar is the state

Gwalior, Kozhikode join UNESCO Creative Cities Network, Kerala’s Kozhikode named
India’s first ‘City of Literature’ by UNESCO
• Kerala’s Kozhikode city was officially designated as a UNESCO City of Literature. This recognition
makes Kozhikode the first city in India to receive this title. UNESCO formally conveyed the honour to the
Kozhikode Corporation as the city joined the ranks of 55 newly selected creative cities. Kozhikode has a
history of hosting various literary gatherings, including the Kerala Literature Festival. On World
Cities Day, 55 cities joined the Unesco Creative Cities Network (UCCN).
• In India, Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh was placed in the Creative Cities Network in the field of
music. The newly designated Creative Cities were invited to participate in the 2024 UCCN Annual Conference
in Portugal under the theme of bringing youth to the table for the next decade.
Centre launches hackathon to detect ‘dark patterns’ on e-commerce platforms
• The Centre launched ‘Dark Patterns Buster Hackathon 2023’ to design an innovative app or software-
based solution that can detect dark patterns on e-commerce platforms. The hackathon has been
organised by the Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA) in collaboration with IIT-(BHU) and was
launched by Nidhi Khare, Special Secretary, DoCA.
Electronic commerce or e-commerce is a business model that lets firms and individuals buy and sell
things over the Internet. Propelled by rising smartphone penetration, the launch of 4G networks and increasing
consumer wealth, the Indian e-commerce market is expected to grow to US$ 200 billion by 2026 from US$ 38.5
billion in 2017. In order to increase the participation of foreign players in the e-commerce field, the
Government has increased the limit of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the e-commerce marketplace
model for up to 100% (in B2B models). In the Union Budget of 2018-19, the government has allocated Rs.
8,000 crore (US$ 1.24 billion) to BharatNet Project, to provide broadband services to 150,000-gram
panchayats.
Garuda Shakti: Indian, Indonesian troops engage in joint training exercise in Karawang
• The Special Forces of India and Indonesia commenced the joint military exercise Garuda Shakti.
The exercise is currently underway in Indonesia at Sangga Buana Training Area, Karawang. The eighth edition
of Exercise Garuda Shakti focuses on enhancing understanding, cooperation and interoperability between the
Special Forces of both armies. The goal of the joint exercise is to advance the special forces’ skills. It
also aims to share information on new weapons, equipment, tactics, techniques, and procedures, as well as
lessons learned from previous operations.

visa-free travel area, on January 1. The small nation of 4 million people predict the developments will
be remembered as one of the country’s biggest achievements since it gained independence during the
breakup of Yugoslavia 31 years ago.

Benjamin Netanyahu sworn in as Israel PM
• Benjamin Netanyahu was sworn into office taking the helm of the most right-wing and religiously
conservative government in Israel’s history and vowing to enact policies that could cause domestic and
regional turmoil and alienate the country’s closest allies. Netanyahu took the oath of office moments
after parliament passed a vote of confidence in his new government. His return marks his sixth term
in office, continuing his more than decade-long dominance over Israeli politics. Netanyahu, 73, already
Israel’s longest-serving Prime Minister, has the support of 63 lawmakers in the 120-member Knesset
(Israeli parliament). In the house, 54 lawmakers voted against his government. Netanyahu announced
the appointment of 31 ministers and three deputy ministers.

India hand over 125 Mahindra SUVs to Sri Lanka under existing line of credit
• India handed over 125 Mahindra SUVs to Sri Lanka under an existing line of credit. The fleet is part
of 500 state-of-the-art SUVs which were promised under a memorandum of understanding signed earlier this
year. The SUVs are being provided to enable the Sri Lanka Police to provide prompt and efficient services to the
public.
• As part of its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, India has extended multi-pronged assistance to Sri Lanka
over the last 12 months to help the country tide over its worst economic and humanitarian crisis,
since its independence from Great Britain in 1948.

Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ takes oath as Nepal’s new Prime Minister
• Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Nepal for the third time,
a day after President Bidya Devi Bhandari appointed him as the new premier. The former guerrilla
leader was appointed as the country’s new prime minister after he submitted a letter to the President showing
the support of 169 members in the 275-member House of Representatives.
Nepal is a landlocked country in South Asia. Nepal has a diverse geography, including fertile plains,
subalpine forested hills, and eight of the world’s ten tallest mountains, including Mount Everest, the
highest point on Earth. Nepal is a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-religious and multi-cultural state, with
Nepali as the official language. Kathmandu is the nation’s capital and the largest city. The name “Nepal” is first
recorded in texts from the Vedic period of the Indian subcontinent, the era in ancient Nepal when

British Indian ex-minister Alok Sharma knighted in King’s New Year Honours List
• Alok Sharma, an Indian-origin former UK minister, has been knighted for his contribution to
combatting climate change through his leadership at the COP26 summit by King Charles III in his first
New Year Honours list. The “Overseas List” and leads a tally of over 30 Indian-origin campaigners,
economists, academics, medics and philanthropists to be honoured in the annual list issued in the name of the
British monarch for their “incredible public service” across the UK and abroad. The UN Climate Change
Conference in Glasgow (COP26) was held last year in Scotland from October 31 to November 13. Sharma
was the president of the conference, the first since the Paris Agreement of COP21.

China launches world’s first methane-fuelled space rocket
• A private Chinese company has launched the world’s first methane-liquid oxygen space rocket into
orbit. The Zhuque-2 carrier rocket blasted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest
China’s Inner Mongolia autonomous region, and “completed the flight mission according to the procedure.
International Maritime Organisation targets achieving net-zero emissions by 2050
• All 178 countries, including associate members, of the International Maritime Organization have
committed to ensure that international shipping operations achieve net zero emissions “by or
around” 2050.
• The agreement also includes indicative targets of reducing emissions 20-30 per cent from 2008 levels by
2030, and 70-80 per cent by 2040. “The adoption of the 2023 IMO Greenhouse Gas Strategy is a monumental
development for IMO and opens a new chapter towards maritime decarbonization,”.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a specialised agency of the United Nations responsible
for regulating shipping. The IMO was established following agreement at a UN conference held in
Geneva in 1948 and the IMO came into existence ten years later, meeting for the first time in 17 March
1958. Headquartered in London, United Kingdom, IMO currently has 175 Member States and three Associate
Members. The IMO’s primary purpose is to develop and maintain a comprehensive regulatory framework
for shipping and its remit today includes maritime safety, environmental concerns, legal matters, technical co-
operation, maritime security and the efficiency of shipping.
U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris makes history with tie-breaking votes in Senate
• Kamala Harris set another record in U.S. history when she matched a 191-year-old record of casting
tie-breaking votes as a Vice President and backed the nomination of Indian-origin Kalpana Kotagal
to be a member of a federal agency. Ms. Harris, who made history as the first woman or person of colour
in 2020, equalled the record held by Senator John C. Calhoun, a Democratic-Republican who served
as Vice President to John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson from 1825 to 1832. Ms. Harris, cast her
vote on cloture for the nomination of Kotagal, a diversity, equity, and inclusion expert to serve as a member of
the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
BRICS is the acronym coined to associate five major emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India,
China, and South Africa. Since 2009, the governments of the BRICS states have met annually at formal
summits. Originally the first four were grouped as “BRIC” (or “the BRICs”) before the induction of
South Africa in 2010. The term “BRIC” is believed to be coined in 2001 by then-chairman of Goldman
Sachs Asset Management, Jim O’Neill, in his publication Building Better Global Economic BRICs. But, it was
actually coined by Roopa Purushothaman who was a Research Assistant in the original report. The
BRIC grouping’s 1st formal summit, also held in Yekaterinburg, Russia, commenced on 16 June 2009.
Singapore’s passport is now the most powerful in the world 2023 Henley Passport Index
• The updated 2023 Henley Passport Index was released. Singapore tops the list, having the world’s
most powerful passport. It has visa-free access to 192 travel destinations out of 227 around the globe.
While the US once topped the ranking nearly a decade back, it is now in the eighth place with 184
destinations listed as visa free. India, on the other hand, improved its position by 5 spots from last
year, and is currently ranked 80th on the index along with Togo and Senegal, with visa-free access to
57 countries.
The Henley Passport Index is a ranking system that evaluates all the world’s passports based on the
number of travel destinations their holders can access without the need for a prior visa. This index
encompasses 199 different passports and covers 227 travel destinations. It is compiled and published by Henley
& Partners, a global citizenship and residence advisory firm.
Saudi Arabia invests USD 10 billion to build Pakistan’s largest oil refinery in Gwadar
• Four Pakistani state-owned petroleum companies have signed a memorandum of understanding
with Saudi Arabia to build Pakistan’s largest oil refinery with an investment of USD 10 billion in the
strategic Gwadar Port. The MoU to set up the facility with a production capacity of 300,000 barrels per day
was signed with the state-owned Oil and Gas Development Company Ltd (OGDCL), Pakistan State Oil (PSO),
Pakistan Petroleum Ltd (PPL), and Government Holdings Private Ltd (GHPL) signed the MoU to join hands
and provide comfort to the Saudi firm to enter Pakistan with a major investment.

PM of Papua New Guinea visits Indian warships on port call at Port Moresby
• In a rare diplomatic gesture, the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea (PNG) James Marape visited
the two Indian Naval ships that made a port call at Port Moresby and called for more such naval
visits and increased defence cooperation. The two frontline warships under the Eastern Naval Command,
INS Sahyadri and INS Kolkata, arrived as India sharpens into focus on the Pacific. “PM Marape
welcomed Indian Naval Ships; thanked PM Modi for visiting PNG in May 2023.
• Papua New Guinea is a country in Oceania that comprises the eastern half of the island of New
Guinea and its offshore islands in Melanesia (a region of the southwestern Pacific Ocean north of
Australia). Its capital, located along its southeastern coast, is Port Moresby.
Forum for India–Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) is a multinational grouping developed in 2014 for
cooperation between the Republic of India and 14 Pacific Islands nations which include Cook Islands, Fiji,
Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Palau, Papua
New Guinea, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. All heads of state or heads of government of the above countries
met in Suva, Fiji in November 2014 for the first time where the annual summit was conceptualised.
The European Union launches first phase of world’s first carbon border tariff
• The European EU Union launched the first phase of the world’s first system to impose CO2 emissions
tariffs on imported steel, cement and other goods as it tries to stop more polluting foreign products
from undermining its green transition.
• The planned tariff has caused disquiet among trading partners and at a forum last month, China’s top climate
envoy Xie Zhenhua urged countries not to resort to unilateral measures such as the EU levy. The
bloc will not begin collecting any CO2 emission charges at the border until 2026.

Indonesian president launches Southeast Asia’s first high-speed railway, funded by China
• Indonesian President Joko Widodo inaugurated Southeast Asia’s first high-speed railway as it was
set to begin commercial operations, a key project under China’s Belt and Road infrastructure initiative
that will drastically reduce the travel time between two key cities.

• Finland became the first country to launch digital passports, aiming to streamline and enhance
international travel. Finnish travellers departing from Helsinki to the UK now have the option to present a
digital ID on their mobile device instead of their physical passport.
Finland is a Nordic country in Northern Europe. It borders Sweden to the northwest, Norway to the
north, and Russia to the east, with the Gulf of Bothnia to the west and the Gulf of Finland to the south, across
from Estonia. Helsinki is the capital and largest city. Euro is the official currency of it. Petteri Orpo is

Armenia’s parliament votes to join the International Criminal Court, straining ties with
ally Russia
• Armenia’s Parliament voted to join the International Criminal Court, a move that further strains
the country’s ties with its old ally Russia after the court issued an arrest warrant for President
Vladimir Putin over events in Ukraine. Moscow last month called Yerevan’s effort to join the ICC an
“unfriendly step,” and the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned Armenia’s ambassador.
• Armenia reports ‘casualties’ after saying Azerbaijan opened fire. Countries that have signed and
ratified the Rome Statute that created the ICC are bound to arrest Mr. Putin, who was indicted for war crimes
connected to the deportation of children from Ukraine, if he sets foot on their soil. Armenia later sought to
assure Russia that Mr. Putin would not be arrested if he entered the country. Lawmakers voted to
ratify the Rome Statute by a vote of 60-22. The decision after that is to be submitted to Armenia’s president,
who must prepare a ratification document, which is then deposited with the UN secretary-general.

• Dutch Election Winner Geert Wilders Is Anti-Islam Firebrand Known as the Dutch Donald Trump.
He’s been threatened with death countless times by extremists, convicted of insulting Moroccans, and Britain
once banned him from entering the country. Now Geert Wilders has won a massive victory in a Dutch
election and is in pole position to form the next governing coalition and possibly become the
Netherlands’ next prime minister.
• The only time Wilders came close to governing was when he supported the first coalition formed
by Prime Minister Mark Rutte in 2010. But Wilders did not formally join the minority administration and
brought it down after just 18 months in office in a dispute over austerity measures. Since then, mainstream
parties have shunned him. They no longer can.

‘World-first’ crypto regime set out by UK government
• The UK has announced plans to regulate the crypto space and introduce a “world-first regime”
to prevent market abuses. The new roadmap for cryptocurrency regulations would also aim to grow the
economy and encourage innovation in the burgeoning sector.
A cryptocurrency or crypto, is a virtual currency secured by cryptography. It is designed to work as a
medium of exchange, where individual ownership records are stored in a computerised database. The
defining trait of a cryptocurrency is that they are not issued by the government agency of any country making them
immune against any interference and manipulation from them. The first type of crypto currency was Bitcoin,
which to this day remains the most-used, valuable and popular. Along with Bitcoin, other alternative
cryptocurrencies with varying degrees of functions and specifications have been created. Some are iterations
of bitcoin while others have been created from the ground up. Bitcoin was launched in 2009 by an
individual or group known by the pseudonym “Satoshi Nakamoto. The competing cryptocurrencies that
were created as a result of Bitcoin’s success are known as altcoins. Some of the well-known altcoins are as
follows: Litecoin, Peercoin, Namecoin, Ethereum and Cardana.
IMF lifts 2023 global growth forecast
• The outlook for the global economy is growing slightly brighter as China eases its zero-COVID
policies and the world shows surprising resilience in the face of high inflation, elevated interest rates and
Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine.
• That’s the view of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which now expects the world economy to grow
2.9% this year. That forecast is better than the 2.7% expansion for 2023 that the IMF predicted in
October, though down from the estimated 3.4% growth in 2022.
• The IMF said global growth would still fall to 2.9% in 2023 from 3.4% in 2022, but its latest World Economic
Outlook forecasts mark an improvement over an October prediction of 2.7% growth this year with
warnings that the world could easily tip into recession.
• IMF retains growth projections for India; economy expected to slow down to 6.1% in 2023 from 6.8% in
2022. For 2024, the IMF said global growth would accelerate slightly to 3.1%, but this is a tenth of a percentage
point below the October forecast as the full impact of steeper central bank interest rate hikes slows demand.

The latest currency that was added to the basket of currencies by the International Monetary Fund
to determine the value of XDR is the Chinese renminbi in 2016. The other international currencies in the
basket of currencies are British Pound, Japanese Yen, US Dollar, and Euro. XDR is the currency code
of Special Drawing Rights. Andorra has joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF), to become its
190th member.
PhonePe launches cross-border UPI payments service, says it’s India’s first
• PhonePe has launched a service that will allow the fintech firm’s Indian users traveling abroad to pay
foreign merchants using Unified Payments Interface (UPI). ‘UPI international’ supports merchant outlets
in UAE, Singapore, Mauritius, Nepal and Bhutan that have a local QR (quick response) code. Users will be able
to make direct payments in a foreign currency from their Indian bank, like they do with international debit cards.
PhonePe is an Indian digital payments and financial technology company headquartered in Bengaluru,
Karnataka, India. PhonePe was founded in December 2015, by Sameer Nigam, Rahul Chari and Burzin
Engineer. The PhonePe app, based on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), went live in August 2016. It is
owned by Flipkart, a subsidiary of Walmart.
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is an advanced version of Immediate Payment Service (IMPS)-
round–the-clock funds transfer service to make cashless payments faster, easier and smoother. UPI is a
system that powers multiple bank accounts into a single mobile application (of any participating bank),
merging several banking features, seamless fund routing & merchant payments into one hood. UPI
is currently the biggest among the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) operated systems
including National Automated Clearing House (NACH), Immediate Payment Service (IMPS), Aadhaar
enabled Payment System (AePS), Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS), RuPay etc. The top UPI apps
today include PhonePe, Paytm, Google Pay, Amazon Pay and BHIM, the latter being the Government
offering. As part of an agreement, India’s UPI will be linked to Singapore’s PayNow. NPCI launched UPI
with 21 member banks in 2016.
Bank of India becomes first bank to offer Mahila Samman Savings Certificate
• Bank of India, one of the largest public sector banks (PSBs) in the country, has become the first bank
to officially roll out Mahila Samman Savings Certificate (MSSC) scheme. The scheme was announced
by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during her Budget speech this year. The scheme offers an
interest rate of 7.5 per cent per annum, compounded quarterly.
• Under the scheme, individual girls or women can open a Mahila Samman Savings Certificate or a
guardian can open an account on behalf of a minor girl. The account will mature after two years from
the date of opening. Accounts under this scheme can be opened until March 31, 2025.
• According to a statement by the bank, while the minimum investment is Rs. 1,000, any sum in multiples of
Rs. 100 can be deposited, up to a maximum limit of Rs. 2 lakh. Individuals can open multiple accounts
with a gap of three months between each account, subject to the overall investment cap of Rs. 2 lakh. All
earnings under the Mahila Samman Savings Certificate will be taxable as per existing income tax provisions.
However, TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) will not be deducted under the scheme.
Bank of India (BOI) is an Indian public sector bank headquartered in Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai.
Founded in 1906, it has been government-owned since nationalisation in 1969. BoI is a founder member
of SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Inter Bank Financial Telecommunications), which facilitates provision of
cost-effective financial processing and communication services. Bank of India was founded on 7 September 1906 by
a group of eminent businessmen from Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The Bank was under private ownership
and control till 19 July 1969 when it was nationalised along with 13 other banks.
LIC acquires 6.66% stake in Jio Financial Services through demerger process
• Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) has acquired 6.66 per cent stake in Jio Financial Services, the
demerged non-banking financial services unit of the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance group. “Corporation
has acquired 6.660 per cent shareholding in ‘Jio Financial Services Ltd’ through demerger action by ‘Reliance
Industries Ltd”. Jio Financial Services listed on the stock exchanges. The market capitalisation of the financial
services company stood at close to Rs. 1.60 lakh crore.
Life Insurance Corporation of India (abbreviated as LIC) is an Indian government owned insurance
and investment corporation under the ownership of Ministry of Finance, Government of India. The Life
insurance Corporation of India was established on September 1, 1956, when the Parliament of India passed the
Life Insurance of India Act that nationalized the insurance industry in India. Over 245 insurance companies
and provident societies were merged to create the state-owned Life Insurance Corporation of India.
It is based in Mumbai. Shri. Mangalam Ramasubramanian Kumar is the current Chairperson of LIC.
Moody’s affirms India’s sovereign rating at ‘Baa3’; says GDP growth to support increase in
income level
• Moody’s affirmed India’s sovereign rating at ‘Baa3’ with a stable outlook and said high growth will
support a gradual increase in income levels, which will further contribute to economic strength. Moody’s said it
expects India’s economic growth to outpace all other G20 economies through at least the next two years,
driven by domestic demand.
Wipro launches centre of excellence on generative AI at IIT Delhi
• IT major Wipro has announced the launch of a centre of excellence on generative artificial
intelligence in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT Delhi). This centre
has been set up on the premises of the Yardi School of Artificial Intelligence at IIT Delhi, and this Centre of
Excellence (CoE) will support applied research in generative AI. Wipro CoE teams will jointly work on
building innovative solutions using AI, Machine Learning (ML), and other technologies.
Wipro is an Indian multinational corporation that provides information technology, consultant and
business process services. It is one of the leading Big Tech companies. Wipro’s capabilities range across cloud
computing, computer security, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, robotics, data analytics, and other
technology consulting services to customers in 167 countries. The company was incorporated on 29 December
1945 in Amalner, India, by Mohamed Premji. In 1966, after Mohamed Premji’s death, his son Azim
Premji took over Wipro as its chairperson at the age of 21.
IIT-Madras backed firm builds India’s first indigenous operating system BharOS
• Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras in a conference held recently, announced BharOS – a new
mobile operating system focused on privacy and security. It was stated that this Indigenous Mobile
Operating System, developed by JandK Operations Private Limited (JandKops), which has been
incubated by IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation, a Section 8 Company established by IIT
Madras, will benefit India’s 100 crore mobile phone users while providing a secure environment for them.
The foundation is supported by the government’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) as
part of its National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NMICPS).
• Developed by JandK Operations Private Limited (JandKops), the goal of BharOS mobile operating
system, according to its creators, is to provide consumers greater freedom, power, and flexibility, which
can only be modified according to their needs.
The James Webb telescope’s confirmation of its first exoplanet
• After a spectacular first set of images last year, including those of the birthplaces and deathbeds of stars, and
the cosmic waltz of galaxies, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) James Webb
Space Telescope (JWST), the largest and most powerful one ever launched into space, began its year
by confirming an exoplanet.
• The exoplanet, formally christened LHS 475 b, is almost exactly the size of the Earth, clocking in at
99% of our home planet’s diameter. NASA announced a team of two researchers — Kevin Stevenson and Jacob
Lustig-Yaeger, both from the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland—
confirmed the exoplanet using the JWST.
Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state in India as well as the most populous country subdivision in
the world. It was created on 1 April 1937 as the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh during British rule,
and was renamed Uttar Pradesh in 1950, giving the acronym UP. The state is divided into 18 divisions and
75 districts with the capital being Lucknow. On 9 November 2000, a new state, Uttarakhand, was carved
out from the state’s Himalayan hill region. The two major rivers of the state, the Ganges and Yamuna,
join at Allahabad and flow further east as Ganges. The state contributes 80 seats to the lower house of
the Indian Parliament, Lok Sabha and 31 seats to the upper house of the Indian Parliament, Rajya
Sabha. Anandiben Mafatbhai Patel is serving as the current Governor of Uttar Pradesh. She also served
as Governor of Madhya Pradesh. She has served as the first female Chief Minister of Gujarat. Yogi

Pratham gets Indira Gandhi prize for works in education
• Former Vice-President Hamid Ansari presented the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament
and Development of 2021 to Pratham, an NGO functioning in the field of education. The award is in
recognition of Pratham’s work in ensuring quality education for children of the country, particularly
during the COVID-19 pandemic.
• The organisation started its work in the Mumbai slums, setting up community-based pre-schools. Its
outreach in India has now expanded to an average 1 million children directly and 5 million through
government partnerships annually. Its Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), based on surveying
6 lakh rural Indian children, is now used as a model to assess education outcomes and learning deficiencies
in 14 countries.
The Indira Gandhi Peace Prize is an annual prestigious award. It has been named after former Prime
Minister Indira Gandhi. It is conferred every year since 1986 by Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust. It
consists of a monetary award of Rs. 25 lakh along with a citation. Parliamentarians for Global Action is the
first recipient of the award in 1986 and Mikhail Gorbachev is a Russian and former Soviet politician, he
is the second and first person to receive Indira Gandhi Peace Prize in 1987.
Dalai Lama receives Gandhi Mandela Award
• The 14th Dalai Lama conferred the Gandhi Mandela Award 2022 at Thekchen Choeling in Dharamshala’s
McleodGanj by Himachal Pradesh governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. The Tibetan spiritual leader,
receiving the peace prize from the New Delhi-based Gandhi Mandela Foundation, said the qualities
of non-violence and compassion had been ingrained in Indian culture for thousands of years.
• The award is given to personalities who have carried forward the legacies of Gandhi and Mandela
by making significant contributions in the fields of Peace, Social Welfare, Culture, Environment,
Education, Healthcare, Sports and Innovation. This time, the awardee, Dalai Lama, was selected by a
jury including former Chief Justice of India KG Balakrishnan and Justice Dipak Misra, former Supreme Court
Judge Gyan Sudha Misra, former Chief Justice of Nepal Justice Kedarnath Upadhyay and former Chief Justice
of Bangladesh Justice MD Tafazzul Islam.
Film ‘Dear Diary’ wins 53-Hour Challenge for 75 creative minds
• The second edition of ‘75 Creative Minds of Tomorrow’ at International Film Festival of India
(IFFI) in Goa concluded with the award ceremony of the “53-Hour Challenge”. The competition provided
a challenge to the 75 Creative Minds selected from all over the country to produce a short film on their idea of
India@100, all in 53 hours.

November 26 celebrated as Constitution Day
• The Constitution Day - or ‘Samvidhan Divas’ - is celebrated on November 26 to commemorate the
adoption of the Constitution of India. On this day, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the
Constitution of India, which came into effect on 26th January 1950. The Ministry of Social Justice and
Empowerment announced the Centre’s decision to observe 26th November as Constitution Day in 2015. The day
is observed to promote constitutional values among the citizens of India.
• Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was the chairman of the drafting committee of the Constituent Assembly. He
was the first Minister of Law and Justice in India. The framing of the constitution took over 2 years,
11 months, and 17 days. The constituent assembly included 299 members and 15 were a woman. When
the constitution was adopted in 1949, 284 members signed it. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the Chairman of the
Constituent Assembly.
National Milk Day
• The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying celebrated “National Milk Day” to commemorate
101st birth anniversary of the “Father of the White Revolution in India”, Dr. Verghese Kurien also
known as the Milkman of India, as a part of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” on 26th November 2022 in Bengaluru.
• National Milk Day is observed on 26 November to highlight the importance of milk and its benefits.
On 1st June every year, World Milk Day is also celebrated which was established by the Food and
Agricultural Organisation. India is the largest producer of milk.
• Verghese Kurien is known as the “Father of the White Revolution” in India. He was a social entrepreneur
whose vision of the “Billion-Litre Idea”, Operation flood, made dairy farming India’s largest self-
sustaining industry and the largest rural employment sector providing a third of all rural income. This
made India the largest producer of milk in the world.
World AIDS Day 1 December
• Every year, on 1 December, the world commemorates World AIDS Day. People around the world unite
to show support for people living with and affected by HIV and to remember those who lost their lives to AIDS.
The “Equalize” slogan is a call to action. It is a prompt for all of us to work for the proven practical actions
needed to address inequalities and help end AIDS.
International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, 2 December
• The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, 2 December, marks the date of the adoption,
by the General Assembly, of the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and
of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others of 2 December 1949). The focus of this day is on eradicating
contemporary forms of slavery, such as trafficking in persons, sexual exploitation, and the worst forms of child
labour, forced marriage, and the forced recruitment of children for use in armed conflict.

Himachal to be India’s first ‘Green Energy’ state by 2025
• Switching its complete fleet of official vehicles in the transport department to electrical, Himachal Pradesh
achieved a new distinction becoming India’s first state to switch over to electric vehicles. All 19
vehicles in the department, earlier run on petrol/diesel will now have become ‘Go Green’ vehicles to be run
on electrically charged batteries.
• Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu flagged off the vehicles at Shimla’s historic Ridge in
presence of Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri and the entire Cabinet. Sukhu said by converting
diesel/petrol vehicles to e-vehicles will have the twin advantage of cutting down expenditure on
petroleum products besides preserving the pristine environment of the state. All the government
departments will be equipped with electric vehicles within a year.
Country’s first ever Frozen Lake Marathon on Pangong Tso officially registered in
Guinness Book of World Records as world’s highest Frozen Lake marathon
• In Ladakh, country’s first ever Frozen Lake Marathon on Pangong Tso has been officially registered
in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s highest Frozen Lake marathon. It was held at
the world-famous Pangong Lake at an altitude of 4,350 meters above the mean sea level.
• The Frozen Lake Marathon is first of its kind held in the country on Frozen Pangong Lake and is
also considered as the toughest due to high altitude and freezing temperatures. The theme of the marathon
is The Last Run and is organised with an aim to promote winter as well as border tourism in Ladakh while
creating awareness of climate change. It was organised as part of vibrant village Program to accelerate the pace
of development in border villages.
