Course Catalog Description


Introduction to Power Systems basic Infrastructure, Types of AC and DC distributors and calculations, 3–
phase unbalanced load and its calculations; power factor - disadvantages and causes of low power factor,
power factor improvement schemes, most economical power factor and power factor calculations;
different types of tariff and its calculation; voltage control and different methods required for voltage
control; introduction to electric heating-resistance, induction and dielectric heating, electric welding,
resistance welding and its types. illumination schemes for various situations (street lighting,
commercial/industrial lighting, stadium/flood/stage/spot lighting etc.), types of lamps, their working and
relative merit.

Course Learning Objectives


This course is designed to help students to achieve following objectives:
1. Study of electrical power distribution and utilization systems,
2. Analysis of various distribution system components, their performance, limitations and to coordinate
these components,
3. Introduction and understanding of various types of voltage control, power factor improvement
methods and tariff schemes,
4. Familiarization with fundamentals of illumination engineering and electric heating.

Course Learning Outcomes


After successful completion of this course students will be able to:
1. Understand classification of distribution systems. (C2-PLO1)
2. Learn and Analyze DC/AC distributors by solving distribution problems under different loading
conditions. (C4-PLO2)

3. Perform calculations of power factor correction and voltage control systems along with design of
different tariff schemes. (C4-PLO2)
4. Learn power utilization: illumination engineering and electric heating as case studies. (C3-PLO3)

PLO 1- Engineering Knowledge:


The course lectures, assignments, quizzes and exams require direct application of mathematics and
engineering knowledge to successfully complete the course. Students learn how the basic concepts of
electrical engineering are used for power distribution and utilization.
(High relevance to course).
PLO 2- Problem Analysis:
The course includes the assignments and tasks which force students to analyse various distribution
systems along with voltage control, power factor improvement and tariff schemes. These exercises enable
students to formulate and analyze complex engineering problems on the basis of fundamental principles.
(High relevance to course).

PLO 3- Design/Development of Solutions:


Design of power factor improvement plants on the basis of given specification will enable students to
cover PLO3. In addition, the safety and environmental aspects are covered under the CLO4 i.e. illumination
engineering and induction heating or welding techniques.
(High relevance to course).
PLO 4 - 12 are not directly addressed in this course.
