Masonry
Masonry
• masonry, the art and craft of building and fabricating in
stone, clay, brick, or concrete block.
• Stone- rip-rap
• adobe, a heavy clay soil used to make sun-dried bricks.
Adobe is a mixture of clay, sand, and silt with good plastic
qualities that will dry to a hard uniform mass.
• CHB/CMU-Concrete Hollow Block/CMU-Concrete Masonry Unit
CHB/CMU
• Standard hollow block has usually three void cells and two half
cells at both ends having a total of four (3” and 4” CHB’s)
• Consists of proportions of sand and cement and at times pea-sized
(choker) gravel mixed with water
• Having a nominal dimension of 0.4m long by 0.2 m high with
varying thickness:
0.1 m(4”) , 0.15 m(6”) , and 0.2m (8”)
• Load bearing are those whose thickness ranges 15 to 20 cm. With
a strength of 6.89 Mpa (1,000 psi) or higher.
• Non-Load bearing are usually 10 cm thick with strength of 500 –
800 psi (3.4 -5.5 Mpa).
Masonry Wall
• Reinforced Concrete for wall footing
• Reinforcing steel bars and tie wires
• Mortar ( cement and sand ) for block laying
• CHB
• Grout (cement, sand and gravel) for the hollow core or cell.
• There are 12.5 pieces of CHB for every square meter area
CHB Dimensions
• Dimensions must be stated in proper order width, height and
length (WHL)
• Standard dimensions are:

• Commonly used for fencing materials as substitute to concrete

hollow blocks for economy.
• Minimize the use of grout and reinforcement unlike CHB.
• Also used as finishing and decorative materials for exterior and
interior of buildings and other structures.

RIP RAP
Rip-Rap and Grouted Rip-Rap
Rip rap is either with or without grout, with or without filter
backing. Stones intended for rip-rapping shall consist of rocks
which are nearly circular in section as possible. The stone shall
be tough, durable and dense. It shall be resistant to the action
of air and water and suitable in all aspect for the purpose
intended. Adobe stone shall not be used unless specified.
Class of Stone for Rip Rapping
Class A – stone ranging from 15 to 25 kg with at least 50% of the stones
weighing more than 20 kg.
Class B – Stones ranging from 30 to 70 kg. With at least 50%mof the
stones weighing more than 50 kg.
Class C – Stones ranging from 60 to 100 kg. With at least 50% of the
stones weighing more than 80 kg.
Class D- Stones weighing from 100 kg. to 200 kg. with at least 50% of
the stones weighing more than 150 kg.
