Emory College of Arts Faculty No Confidence Motion
The events of April 25, 2024, are unprecedented in the history of Emory College
and University. A peaceful demonstration was met by Emory Police (EPD) and a large
contingent of heavily armed Atlanta Police and Georgia State Patrol officers who used
chemical agents, electric shocks, and other measures and arrested multiple ECAS
students, ECAS faculty, and others. There was no evidence of violence on the part of
protesters, and no disruption of teaching and research activities.
The ECAS Faculty stands by the Statement of Principles of Free Expression, and
especially the right to protest and the commitment to protect that right when others
attempt to restrict it. The Faculty:
Be it further resolved that the ECAS Faculty demands that all charges be dropped
immediately, and that the university pay all legal expenses.
