    ECAS FACULTY

    Motion of No Confidence and Demand for Redress

    The events of April 25, 2024, are unprecedented in the history of Emory College
    and University. A peaceful demonstration was met by Emory Police (EPD) and a large
    contingent of heavily armed Atlanta Police and Georgia State Patrol officers who used
    chemical agents, electric shocks, and other measures and arrested multiple ECAS
    students, ECAS faculty, and others. There was no evidence of violence on the part of
    protesters, and no disruption of teaching and research activities.

    What was disruptive—profoundly so—was the conduct of the University


    administration that violated multiple College and University policies and is an affront to
    everything Emory stands for.

    The ECAS Faculty stands by the Statement of Principles of Free Expression, and
    especially the right to protest and the commitment to protect that right when others
    attempt to restrict it. The Faculty:

    1. Condemns the decision by the administration to summon the police.


    2. Condemns violence and the use of force.
    3. Condemns the arrest of students and faculty.
    4. Abhors the false statements by President Fenves and other members of
    the administration.

    Be it resolved that the ECAS Faculty expresses a vote of no confidence in President


    Fenves whose words and actions do not represent the values of ECAS Faculty and the
    College of Arts and Sciences.

    Be it further resolved that the ECAS Faculty demands that all charges be dropped
    immediately, and that the university pay all legal expenses.
