Shipping term Description
FOB Free on Board The seller quotes a price including the cost of delivering goods to
the nearest port. The buyer bears all the shipping expenses and is
responsible to get the products from that port to its final destina-
tion. In simple terms, FOB price means the buyer has to bear the
shipping costs completely. This is one of the most used shipping
terms by international buyers and sellers.
EXW Ex-Works The seller has no involvement with the transportation costs and
risks. The buyer has to collect the goods from the seller’s site and
get them to the final destination. All the costs and risks are borne
by the buyer. It is advisable that the buyer purchases insurance
since the goods can get damaged in transit. EXW is ideal when the
buyer and seller are in the same country or region.
CFR Cost and Freight The seller pays the loading and freight costs from his premises
up to the destination port. Then, the buyer has to arrange for the
goods to be transported from the port to his premises. The seller
is only responsible for the cost of shipping the products to the
destination port. CFR is used for products transported by sea or
inland waterways only. The seller does not bear the risk of loss or
damage during transit.
CIF Cost, Insurance, If the buyer opts for CIF price, the seller pays for the loading and
and Freight freight costs right from his premises up to the destination port as
well as insurance. In the case of damage or loss, the seller bears
the risk completely. The buyer has to arrange for transportation of
the goods from the port to his premises. CIF is a safer option than
CFR since the goods are insured by the seller up to their arrival at
the destination port.
DAP Delivered at Place It was previously known as DDU, Delivery Duty Unpaid. In this
case, the seller is responsible for getting the goods from his own
factory up to the premises of the buyer. He also bears the risk in
the case of loss or damage of the goods right until the products
are delivered to the buyer. The buyer only has to pay the import
duties or custom clearance charges.
DDP Delivery Duty Paid The seller is responsible for shipping the goods from his factory to
the destination address provided by the buyer, usually his factory
or warehouse and is also liable for any damage or loss of goods
during transit. The seller also takes care of the customs, VAT, or
import duties levied on the products. The buyer only has to re-
ceive the products at the destination. In most cases, most sellers
only offer DDP for small shipments.

Bodo Möller Chemie Expands Distribution
Structures for Adhesives in West Africa
T he Bodo Möller Chemie Group is expanding on
the African continent and has been supplying
the West African market with its own warehouse in
the Nigerian metropolitan area Lagos since 2022.

From there, the company provides specialty chem-

icals such as adhesives, resins, additives and fillers
from leading chemical manufacturers to large and
small customers in the paints and varnishes, coat-
ings, printing inks as well as plastics industry, metal
pre-treatment and DIY sectors with its own reliable
logistics.

“Africa, especially with the countries of Nigeria,

Cameroon, Senegal, Ivory Coast and Ghana, is a
growth market with a steadily increasing demand for special solutions for chemical applications. In addition to the high level
of application expertise that we have built up over decades and apply in the form of personal consulting ser-
vices, with our warehouse in Lagos we offer customers very short supply chains and thus a special degree of
reliability,” said Frank Haug, CEO of the Bodo Möller Chemie Group.

One-stop Store Concept with Application Expertise

Nigeria, along with other West African countries, is considered an industrial growth zone, especially for
the plastics industry, wall and facade paints, DIY, and many other sectors. However, long supply chains for
imports from abroad can be problematic due to the lengthy customs and import procedures. For this reason,
the Bodo Möller Chemie Group takes over the local warehousing of standard resins, additives and pigments
for the paints and coatings industry, thus also helping the local industry to react more quickly to market
requirements. “In Northwest Africa, the Group’s typical concept of a one-stop store with additional appli-
cation expertise is very much appreciated,” said Basem Siaj, managing director Middle East at Bodo Möller
Chemie. “Thanks to our own logistics, the comprehensive portfolio of raw materials is available in line with
the market and demand.”

“Particularly on the African continent, long supply chains are common due to customs and im-
port hurdles, which we can eliminate through our own warehouse and thus realize very short
delivery times. Our local industry experts also provide valuable assistance to the local industry
in terms of material selection and application,” said Volker Oehl, director business develop-
ment at Bodo Möller Chemie Group.

Distribution For Leading Manufacturers

The company can look back on almost 50 years of experience in sales and consulting on specialty chemicals
and continues to expand the sales and competence network between leading chemical producers and the
user industry in Europe and worldwide. Proven industry partners for the African market include manu-
facturers such as BASF for additive resins and dispersions, Songwon for plastics and polymer additives,
Ruichem for titanium dioxide and Huntsman Advanced Materials for coatings and adhesives used in the
construction and DIY sectors. Products from Henkel are offered for the pre-treatment of metals, as well as
Kalrez® perfluoroelastomer from DuPont for seals. The portfolio of the branch in Nigeria also includes sili-
cone oils from DOW.

Shin-Etsu Chemical has developed a sili-
cone rubber for molding that is optimal as
an insulation covering material for onboard
high-voltage cable in automobiles
S hin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Tokyo; President: Yasuhiko Saitoh)
has developed a new silicone rubber for molding (the “KE-5641-U”) that is
optimal as an insulation covering material for high-voltage cable used in auto-
mobiles.

In the case of electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), their
drive systems increasingly require higher-voltage/larger current cable. Be-
cause of this, high withstand voltage characteristics are being sought after for
high-voltage cable for EVs and HEVs. Accordingly, when the currently existing
insulation covering material is used in order to secure the insulation’s perfor-
mance, the covering layers of the cable become too thick and the cable becomes
inflexible and therefore problematic to handle and to route through the interior of a vehicle. Thus, automobile manufacturers
are seeking high-voltage cable that has superior flexibility that makes wiring easier to handle.

Developed by taking advantage of our company’s unique technologies, Shin-Etsu Chemical’s new silicone rubber for molding
product, the KE-5641-U, will help facilitate the solution of these issues. With this new product’s high withstand voltage char-
acteristics, even when the high-voltage cable’s insulation system covering layers are made thinner, superior insulation perfor-
mance is secured. In addition, the thinness of the covering layers leads to a significant improvement in the flexibility of the
cable, and at the same time, it realizes a thinner diameter and lighter weight high-voltage cable.

The product’s main characteristics are as follows:

• It realizes the industry’s top-level high dielectric withstand voltage (DWV) characteristics. Its dielectric breakdown strength
is 40kV/mm — our currently existing product’s strength is 26kV/mm.

• Because it is made of silicone rubber, this new product has combined many superlative characteristics, such as b resistance
to heat and cold, weatherability and flame retardancy.

• Compared to non-silicone type insulation covering materials, it is stellar in long-term reliability.

In addition to its usage for vehicles, the new product can also be used as an insulation
covering material in high-voltage cables for applications in such fields as industrial ma-
chinery, railroad equipment, and energy plants, and it will contribute to higher perfor-
mance and improved reliability.

Shin-Etsu Chemical will continue to endeavor to enhance our ability to contribute to

the solution of various social and customer issues. We will work toward the achieve-
ment of this goal by developing and supplying advanced functional silicone products
through making full use of the technological power and knowhow that Shin-Etsu has
nurtured up to now, as we strive to further contribute to the realization of the sustain-
ability of society.

A Solvay launches Polycare® Heat Therapy for bio-
based thermoprotection in hair care

S olvay, a leader in naturally derived ingredients for beauty care formulations, introduces Polycare® Heat Therapy, a new func-
tional active ingredient that protects hair from thermal damage due to repeated use of hair styling appliances operating at
very high temperatures. The non-ecotoxic, double-derivatized cationic guar active ingredient advances the global trend of bio-
based and silicone-free solutions in hair care and delivers excellent thermal protection in transparent formulations.

“Our new Polycare® Heat Therapy addresses the challenge of protecting hair against
thermal damage caused by high-heat devices such as flat or curling irons and hair dry-
ers,” explains Stephanie Neplaz, Global Innovation Marketing Director, Hair care, at
Solvay. “As the market’s best naturally-derived performer in this segment, it helps brand
owners in the industry replace incumbent silicone and other synthetic polymers, and
complements our broad portfolio of bio-based beauty care ingredients.”
Heat is a powerful hair
styling tool, but it can
also cause severe dam-
age, such as dehydration
and delipidation, brittle-
ness, porosity, reduced
surface and loss of soft-
ness. When hair is dam-
aged by heat, restoring its
healthy physical integri-
ty and sensory qualities
is difficult. Thus, it is ad-
visable to protect it when
using high-heat styling
appliances by provid-
ing a thermal shield and
minimizing its thermal
stress to avoid further
damage.

In hair care formula-

tions, Polycare® Heat
Therapy forms an invis-
ible and imperceptible barrier on the hair surface. As a multi-functional ingredient, it adds discipline, straightening effect
and softness, while also improving detangling and wet combability without build-up in multiple applications. Comprehensive
testing at Solvay has demonstrated that this silicone-free solution can reduce thermally induced hair damage by up to 30%. As
a result, the hair is less exposed, less damaged and more protected.

Polycare® Heat Therapy extends the range of Solvay’s active ingredients promoting hair health, which also include Polycare® Split
Therapy to repair and care and Polycare® Frizz Therapy to style and protect. Polycare® Heat Therapy is ethically sourced from
renewable sources through the company’s Sustainable Guar Initiative program in India and serves as a role model of sustainable
development in line with the Solvay One Planet roadmap.
