Refer to the Physics A datasheet for data, formulae and relationships information.
1 a An electron travels parallel to a uniform horizontal electric field. At the start of
observations its velocity is in the opposite direction to the electric field as
shown in Figure 1.

Figure 3
A, B, and C are points on the grid.
A positive charge, Q, is placed on the grid at point A. The magnitude of the
electric field strength at point B due to the charge Q is 6.0 × 105 N C1.

A potential difference of 2.4 kV is applied between the plates.
i On Figure 4 draw at least 5 lines to represent the electric field pattern
between the plates.

b A beam of electrons enters the space between the plates at right angles to
the electric field. The horizontal velocity of the electrons is 2.0 107 m s1.
The path of the electrons is shown on Figure 5. The horizontal length of each
plate is 6.0 cm and the separation of the plates is kept at 5.0 cm. The point P
is 4.0 cm horizontally from the point where the beam enters the space
between the plates.

vii On Figure 6 sketch the variation of kinetic energy Ek of the electron with
the horizontal distance x it travels through the electric field and into the
space beyond where there are no forces acting on the electron. You are
not required to calculate any values for Ek.

i On Figure 7 draw electric field lines to represent the field in the region
around the two charges. You should draw a minimum of 5 lines.

b Positive ions are accelerated from rest in the horizontal direction through a
potential difference of 400 V. They are then deflected by the electric field
between two parallel charged plates as shown in Figure 8.
Figure 8
Each ion has a mass of 6.6 × 1027 kg and a charge of 3.2 × 1019 C.
i Show that the horizontal velocity of an ion after the acceleration by the
400 V potential difference is 2.0 × 105 m s1.

ii The ions enter the area between the plates at right angles to the uniform
electric field. Calculate the vertical acceleration of an ion due to this
electric field.
