describe an important Festival in your country

1. what
2. when
3. how
4. why it is important
Tet is, without a doubt, the most significant event in Vietnam, also known as Chinese New Year.
Firstly, this annual celebration, which usually occurs in late January or early February, marks the
start of a New Year in the Lunar calendar. During the Spring Festival, families gather for a lavish
reunion dinner on the eve of the New Year. This meal holds great significance as it symbolizes
unity and the coming together of loved ones. People look forward to the illuminating fireworks
displays and say “Happy New Year” to each other. During this special night, streets, homes, and
public spaces come alive with vibrant decorations and festive ambiance.
Secondly, this festival also represents a time of renewal, hope, and good fortune. It is a time
when people express gratitude, pay respects to ancestors, and set positive intentions for the
future. Adults give children or elder people money in red envelopes as a way of wishing them a
healthy and prosperous new year.
In general, Tet is so important in VN because it holds the meaning of a fresh start for everyone,
making it an integral part of our country’s cultural fabric.

1. how do people in Vietnam value traditional Festival?

Oh, absolutely. In fact, I think we do take the word ‘value’ to a whole new level. Our country has
over 8000 festivals every year, some of which are held at the national level, and some are only
local celebrations.

No matter the scale, though, most Vietnamese go to great lengths to ensure that the traditional
customs are celebrated after meticulous planning and preparation. The elders also make a lot of
efforts in passing down the meanings and ceremonies involved in these festivals to the young
generation.

2. what's the difference between the past and now?

Festivals have undergone significant changes over time. In the past, festivals were primarily
religious or agricultural in nature, closely tied to specific rituals and customs. However, with the
influence of globalization and evolving societal dynamics, festivals have become more diverse
and inclusive. They now encompass a broader range of themes and attract participants from
various cultural backgrounds. Furthermore, festivals have embraced modern technology and
entertainment, incorporating elements like music concerts, art exhibitions, and international
collaborations. These changes have made festivals more appealing to a wider audience and have
transformed them into platforms for cultural exchange and creative expression.
3. is it's wrong for young people to not celebrate traditional Festival?
Well, it’s definitely not. In my opinion, young people nowadays tend to be snowed under with
busy activities and modern life doesn’t seem to suit those traditional rituals anymore. Moreover,
they should decide what to do by their own. Although preserving cultural heritages is integral,
the younger generation shouldn’t be forced in a negative way.
4. what impact to festivals have on local economy?
Festivals can have a significant positive impact on the local economy. Firstly, they attract tourists
and visitors from both domestic and international locations, boosting tourism revenue.
Increased footfall in the area leads to higher demand for accommodation, transportation, and
local businesses, resulting in economic growth. Festivals also provide opportunities for local
artisans, craftsmen, and food vendors to showcase their products and generate income.
Moreover, the festive atmosphere often encourages people to engage in shopping and leisure
activities, further stimulating the local economy. Overall, festivals act as catalysts for economic
development and contribute to the prosperity of the community.
5. are traditional festivals still relevant in the modern world
Absolutely, traditional festivals continue to be relevant in the modern world. While society has
become more globalized and interconnected, people still value their cultural roots and
traditions. Traditional festivals provide a sense of identity and belonging, allowing individuals to
connect with their heritage and celebrate their unique customs. They serve as a reminder of our
history, preserving important cultural practices and passing them on to future generations.
Moreover, traditional festivals often attract tourists and visitors who are eager to experience
authentic cultural celebrations. In this way, traditional festivals contribute to cultural tourism,
promoting cultural diversity and understanding.
6. what kinds of national celebration do you have in your country
We have several main national holidays in our country. The first and most important is the
Spring Festival. This is to celebrate the end of the Chinese lunar year. Another is the Dragon Boat
festival. This festival celebrates a famous Chinese poet named Qu Yuan. Still another is Mid-
Autumn day. During this holiday we eat a traditional dish known as moon cake.
7. who tends to enjoy national celebration more young or old people
I think that older people tend to enjoy national celebrations more than the younger generation.
Older people tend to value traditional holidays because they feel more connected to them. The
younger people like western holidays such as Valentine’s Day because they like the romantic
aspects that are not present in national holidays. Also because of an interest in different cultures
they like to celebrate holidays that are not part of the Chinese calendar.
8. do you think national celebrations are a waste of money?
No, I do not believe that spending money on government celebrations is a waste of money.
National holidays are an important part of our culture and help to create a sense of being
Chinese. There proud patriotic feelings are shared by all people and the celebrations are for
everyone. While some people view the money as misspent, I believe that it is important to
properly celebrate our culture and identity.
9. do you think Western festivals are replacing Vietnamese festivals?
It is true that Western festivals are gradually becoming more popular and familiar in Vietnam,
especially among young people. However, we consider them to be for entertainment purposes
only, while traditional festivals are the cultural identity and pride of Vietnamese people.
We have been colonized for thousands of years without being assimilated. Therefore, I can
confidently say that Western festivals will never be able to take over our traditional ones.
