Course objectives:
To provide a general understanding of biology and an overview of introductory
molecular biology.
Course Format:
General Biology1 is an introductory biology course for non-majors. The class is conducted
for 75 minutes twice a week (RA 4:30 pm –5:45 pm) at SAC 404 Lectures will be
supplemented with readings from the lecture notes. Four lecture periods have been set aside
for exams and you can expect unannounced, in-class quizzes throughout the semester.

Learning outcomes
 The course is an introduction to general biology. It is intended to provide an overview of
basic molecular biology, to give a taste of the subject.
 To share with students about the excitement of modern biological science.
 To impart an understanding and appreciation of the vast diversity of living things, their
special adaptations to their environment, and their evolutionary and ecological
relationships.
 To emphasize the basic unity of life and the interdependence of the thousands of varieties
of living things on the Earth.
 To promote critical thinking by requiring students to evaluate a body of evidence,
separate assumptions form observations, and reach some conclusion based on evidence.
 Critical thinking will be demonstrated with questions essential to critical thinking.
