Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the English 10 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Using

Modal Verbs.
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from
public institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners meet the
standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic
constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and
circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that will
help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You
also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their own
learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the
tasks included in the module.

For the Learner:

Welcome to the English 10 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Using

Modal Verbs.

A modal is a helping, or auxiliary, verb that is joined with a main verb to express an
attitude toward the action or state of being of the main verb.
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to process the
contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.
What I Need to Know

This module will help you understand and master the specific rules of modals
in sentence construction.

Modals (also called modal verbs, modal auxiliary verbs, modal auxiliaries)
are special verbs which behave irregularly in English. They are different from normal
verbs like "work, play, visit..." They give additional information about the function of
the main verb that follows it. They have a great variety of
communicative functions.

Answers are written at the back of this module. Your honesty and integrity is
highly encouraged while answering this module.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. use modal verbs in sentences; and,
2. construct sentences using modal verbs.

Lesson
Using Modal Verbs
3
A modal is a type of auxiliary (helping) verb that is used to express ability,
possibility, permission or obligation. Modal phrases (or semi-modals) are used to
express the same things as modals, but are a combination of auxiliary verbs and the
preposition to.

God is great and we (1) __________ (should/would) be grateful to him. We

(2) __________ (might/should) do our duty and leave the reward in the hands of

What is It

Discussion of Activity 1

Modals are helping verbs used to express mood. They are a form of
development in replacing the dying subjunctive. Unlike the auxiliaries be, do, and
have, the modals never occur as independent verbs, because they do not meet the
tests that an independent verb must meet. Modals cannot take the inflectional
endings of -ing, -s. and -ed. The most common of them are may, might, can, could,
shall, should, will, would, must, and ought.

MODALS FUNCTION
May It expresses either present or future time.
It is frequently used to express permission.
It is used to express wishes.
Might It is the past tense of may.
It also expresses possibility like may.
It expresses past, present, and future time.
Can It is used to express ability.
Can not It is the negative of can and may.
Could It is the past tense of can.

Shall It is used in the first person singular and plural of the simple future.
It is used when we wish to imply the answers depend on a decision
yet to be made.
Will It is used in the second and third persons.
It is used when we assume that the answer is already determined.
Should It is the past tense of shall.
It expresses a strong meaning of obligation.
Would It is the past tense of will.
It is used to make assertion in the present or the future with implied
or stated condition which prevents us from accepting the statement
as fact.
It is also used to express customary action in the past.
