BLITERACY
BLITERACY
BLITERACY
So goodmorning everyone, our first topic for today is about basic literacy
But first let us define what is literacy
[slide for definition - Read the definition]
Very basic yung definition ng literacy ‘di ba? Kapag sinabing literacy alam naman natin
yung mga unang salita at konsepto na papasok sa isip natin lahat? Reading & Writing
Skills, Understanding & Comprehension, etc. Kung natawa or napangiti kayo sa meme na
Nakita niyo kanina sa unang slide, (lipat sa unang slide) ibig sabihin meron kayong
‘literacy skill,’ to be more specific you have the ability to understand the language of
memes which falls under the technology literacy; pero, that will be explained thoroughly
by the next reporters.
Additionally, Literacy is usually defined as the ability to read, write, and do math. But what
do we mean by reading? Maraming tao yung marunong magbasa but can they really
understand its arguments or analogies? How about sa writing? Maraming studyante na
marunong gumawa o magsulat ng sentences but do they really express their complete,
coherent thoughts? And then there’s math. Maaaring marunong tayong magbilang, pero
alam ba natin kung paano mag-analyze ng graphs, interpret statistics, or plan budgets?
These are the skills na kailangan natin to make decisions and function well in daily life.
In other words, one must be able to read and write something successfully to get a job to
earn money to eat and to survive.
[next slide]
One of this is the concerning fact that in 2019 our country is lowest among 79 countries
in comprehension. Makikita niyo to sa kaliwang picture. And baka matanong niyo kung,
anong connect ng comprehension sa literacy? Well, comprehension, or the ability to make
meaning —is the ultimate goal of reading, which makes the latter an important dimension
of literacy. However, makikita naman natin sa kanan na picture, it was reported by UN in
the same year that Filipinos have one of the highest literacy rates among Southeast Asia
which is ironic diba. Ibig sabihin meron pang kailangang i-improve pagdating sa mga
literacy programs na kasalukuyang meron tayo sa bansa. Kasi kung mapapansin natin na
may disparity na highest tayo sa literacy pero lowest naman sa comprehension. So ayun
kasi yung literacy hindi lang siya basta marunong ka magbasa at magsulat kundi yung
magagamit mo siya para sa mga basic needs natin pang araw-araw na buhay.
[next slide]
So, what is Basic Literacy [read the definition]. Now the definition of basic literacy is very
self-explanatory. However, beyond its definition, what’s more important is the importance
of basic literacy and why do we have to study it?
Again, basic literacy is a form of ‘learning to read and write (text and numbers), reading
and writing to learn, which we learn from the earliest years of education in elementary.
However, the more significant aspect is that developing these skills and using them
effectively for meeting basic needs,
So basic literacy is referred to the skills of reading, writing, arithmetic, and overall life-skill
development. And It is very important to possess these skills, to carry out various tasks
and activities and sustain our living conditions in an appropriate manner.
[next slide]
Pero ngayon, in today’s knowledge society, literacy has begun to be used in a much wider
and broader sense to refer to other skills and competencies.
Generally, literacy also encompasses numeracy, the ability to make simple arithmetic
calculations.
So ngayon nalaman natin na hindi lang ability to read and write yung literacy its also the ability
to make simple numeracy.
in a way na nakakapagcommunicate tayo effectively.
In short, basic literacy plays a huge role in our overall development. It is the foundation
of us understanding of the world.
Ayon nga sa Education Development Centre (2012) put it, ‘the power of literacy lies not
only in the ability to read and write, but rather in an individual’s capacity to put those skills
to work in shaping the course of his or her own life’.
Everyone must be literate in order to do the real-life tasks necessary to survive in our
society. Literate means to have competence or knowledge in a specified area.
So ngayong alam na natin yung definition ng literacy ahhh medyo nagkaroon na tayo ng
idea kung ano naman yung basic literacy.
So yung basic literacy dinedefine as form of abilities to read, write, and do basic
arithmetic or numeracy.
In short, Basic literacy are referred to the skills of reading, writing and numeracy. At
gamitin ito para matugunan yung mga pangunahing pangangailangan natin sa araw-
araw.
So again, Basic literacy are referred to the skills of reading, writing, arithmetic and overall life-skill
development.
It is vital for the individuals to possess these skills, to carry out various tasks and activities
and sustain their living conditions in an appropriate manner. Basic literacy skills are
regarded as an indispensable component of human resource development. It is
fundamental to not only growth and development of human resources, but also to lead
to social and economic progress of the nation. They render an important contribution
towards bringing about improvements in the quality of lives of the individuals
Acquisition of basic literacy skills help the individuals to carry out the functions of child
development, health care and well- being, management of household responsibilities,
purchase, and sales of items, carrying out banking transactions, and making decisions.
means the ability to use correspondences of visual shapes, to spoken sounds, in order
to decode written materials, and to translate them into oral language. Miller (1973: 3)
noted that “comprehension literacy means having ability to understand the meaning of
verbal materials.
Examples
So, example, alam na natin na yung
Literacy is usually defined as the ability to read, write, and do math. But what do we mean
by reading?
Maraming tao na marunong o maaring kaya nilang bumasa ng isang document or
newspaper pero naiintindihan ba talaga nila yung binabasa nila at yung mga argument
and analogies na sa sinasabi sa binabasa nila.
How about writing? Maaaring kaya ng isang studyante na magsulat at gumawa ng
sentences or essay but can they truly express their complete and coherent thoughts?
And sa pagsosolve naman ng math, maaaring kaya nating magbilang ng 1-100 pero kaya
ba natin o alam ba natin kung paano suriin yung mga graph, mapaliwanag o bigyang-
kahulugan ang mga statistics, o magplano ng budget?
These basic literacy skills are needed to make our decisions and for us to function well
in daily life.
In other words, kailangan ng isa na matutong magbasa at magsulat successfully in order
to get a job, to earn money to eat in order to survive.
People need to be able to understand and use those words and numbers for practical
purposes, such as deliberating ideas and solving problems.
And we all know that reading and writing is very dynamic process of communication that
requires certain skills and strategies for making meaning through
interpretation and creation of printed text.
People may be able to read the words in a document, but can they grasp its arguments
or analogies? How about writing? Students may be able to write or type sentences, but
can they express complete, cogent thoughts? Then there’s math. Workers may be able
to count numbers, but do they know how to analyze graphs, interpret statistics, or plan
budgets?
Similarly, UNESCO (2010) submitted that Literacy is at the heart of basic education for
all, and essential for eradicating poverty, reducing child mortality, curbing population
growth, achieving gender equality and ensuring sustainable development, peace, and
democracy.
