Protocol Description
OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) protocol, is an Interior Gateway Protocol used to distribute
routing information within a single Autonomous System. Routers use link-state algorithms
advertisements to send routing information to all nodes in an inter-network by calculating
the shortest path to each node based on the topography of the Internet constructed by each
node.
Each router sends that portion of the routing table (keeps track of routes to particular
network destinations), which describes the state of its own links. In addition, it also sends
the complete routing structure (topography).

Enabling/Disabling OSPF
Enabling OSPF takes the user to the Router Configuration Mode from which the router
related commands are executed. Disabling OSPF terminates the OSPF process.

Enable OSPF
Enable OSPF globally in the Switch AOS1 by executing these commands.
aos# configure terminal
aos(config)# router ospf

Disable OSPF
Disable OSPF globally in the switch AOS1, by executing these commands.
aos(config-router)#
aos(config)# no router ospf

Configuring Router-id
The Router-id configured must be one of the IP addresses of the IP interfaces configured in
the switch.

27 DECEMBER 2018 AVIAT NETWORKS

CONFIGURING OSPF CHAPTER 2

1. Execute the following commands to configure the router-id.

aos# configure terminal
aos(config)# router ospf
aos(config-router)# router-id 10.10.2.1
It is possible to configure an arbitrary value for the IP address for each router.
However, each router ID must be unique. To ensure uniqueness, the router-id must
match with one of the IP interface addresses of the router.

2. Exit from the Router Configuration mode.

aos(config-router)# exit
3. View the configuration details by executing the following show command.
aos# show ip ospf

Configuring OSPF Interface Parameters

Configuration of the OSPF Interface parameters are described in the following sub-
sections.
N O TE: The interfac e parameters are c onfigured in the Interface
C onfiguration mode.
1. Execute the following commands prior to the configuration of OSPF Interface
Parameters to:
l Enable OSPF globally in the switch AOS1.
l Configure the OSPF router-id.
l Enable OSPF over the VLAN interface and associate the interface with an OSPF
area. VLAN Interfaces VLAN1 and VLAN10 are created as part of the prerequisite
configuration.

When OSPF routing is enabled using the “network” command, the session established is
properly mapped with the interface only if the interface administrative status is up. This is
because to enable OSPF in an interface, both IP address and interface index are used.
2. Enter the Interface Configuration mode.

OSPF Prefix Suppression

AOS Supports OSPF prefix suppression for point-to-point networks. OSPF prefix
suppression is a mechanism to prevent connected IP prefixes (transit-only networks) from
being installed in the routing tables without impacting the reachability to the end hosts.
This is done by hiding by omitting the corresponding type 3 link in the router LSA (RFC 6860
Sec 2.1.2). This allows network administrators to control what IP prefixes are installed in
the routing table.
The feature is especially useful in an MPLS network as it limits the size of MPLS label
database by hiding transit-only routes from LDP and thus ensuring no labels are assigned
for transit-only prefixes. Limiting the size of LDP database improves scalability and
convergence performance for MPLS services.
This can be achieved by two ways:
l Globally Suppressing IP Prefix Advertisements per OSPF Process

CONFIGURING OSPF CHAPTER 2

OSPF convergence can be reduced by configuring the OSPF process on a router to

prevent the advertisement of connected IP prefixes by using the ‘prefix-
suppression’ command in router configuration mode
l Suppressing IP Prefix Advertisements on a Per-Interface Basis
You can explicitly configure an OSPF interface not to advertise its IP network to its
neighbors by using the ‘ip ospf prefix-suppression’ command in interface
configuration mode.
Refer to CTR 8500-8300 OSPF CLI Commands Guide.
