This study aims to determine the Impact of Tiktok to the Academic Performance
of Grade 10 Students in Antipolo National High School S.Y. 20203-2024
3. What are the positive impacts of Tiktok to the academic performance of the students?
4.What are the negative impacts of Tiktok to the academic performance of the
students?
Conceptual Framework
The scope of this study is the impact of TikTok on the academic performance of
grade students. Many students at Antipolo National High School are using Tiktok, which
can make it even harder for students to plan out their study time and complete their
assignments on time. The research shows that it's easy for students to waste time on
Tiktok, so they can't do their assignments because they've used up their time on Tiktok.
Tiktok is used by students every day, so they lose focus on learning and can't do
schoolwork, so their grades drop. They should learn to limit the use of Tiktok. There
should be a time for using the phone, and there should also be a time for studying and
doing schoolwork. TikTok can be helpful and fun. However, it can also be very
dangerous.TikTok can also have a negative impact on students by encouraging them to
participate in dangerous social media challenges, connecting them with bullies or
predators, or encouraging screen time addiction. TikTok also encourages self-harm and
suicidal ideation, describing how TikTok's relentless pursuit of young users' attention
risks exacerbating mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, and self-harm.
Students. Students can use Tiktok as a platform to express themselves through films
and show off their creativity. Their confidence and creative abilities can both be
improved by this. Students are able to prioritize their academic obligations and use
social media in an informed manner. It can assist students in improving their time
management abilities and striking a healthy balance between their academics and
internet hobbies.
Researchers. Researchers will assist them in gathering various activities from the way
the solution is processed through this investigation.
Future researchers. Future researchers will benefit from the study‟s outcome. This
work may serve as one of the foundations for an innovative theory of learning.
Parents. Parents can use this information to make sure their children's academic
performance is not affected by monitoring and setting appropriate limits on their social
media usage.
Definition of Terms
Ex. Because of addiction in using Tiktok application, most of the students procrastinate
and their academic performance in school quite inactive.
Ex. It is crucial to arrange all the study on how TikTok affects grades of pupils at
Antipolo National High School for the academic year 2023-2024.
Average- A number expressing the central or typical value in a set of data, in particular
the mode, median, or (most commonly) the mean. It is calculated by dividing the sum of
the values in the set by their number.
Impact- To have an influence on something, from the Latin word Impactus in the
1600's. For example: The impact of tiktok application to the students academic
performance is noticeable.
Survey Questionnaire- To gather accurate data, the researchers made a survey that is
related to the study. Example: Survey Questionnaires are a technique for gathering
statistical information about the attributes, or actions of a population by a set of
questions.
Tiktok- The name of a social media service where people can share short videos they
have made, often of themselves doing an activity and including music. From its origins
in the sound of a ticking clock began in 2016. Example: Tiktok application is one of the
social media platforms that gives entertainment among its users, especially educational
content for students.
CHAPTER 2
TikTok can improve attention, creativity, and participatory learning for students who use
it as a learning tool. According to the study conducted by (Qing Liu, 2023). Tiktok is
more familiar to students, so using Tiktok in the classroom can increase their learning
efficiency. Hence, TikTok can serve as a resource by offering educational and
informative content on various subjects serving as an effective tool for learning.
Moreover TikTok can support learning through the creation of videos lasting up to 60
seconds by educators and content creators.
Since TikTok became popular worldwide, students now depend on TikTok power,
instead of searching for information in other reliable sources, they are now anticipating
on TikTok to find answers. This shows that Tiktok has an impact on the academic
performance of the students. It was said that TikTok has a minimal negative impact on
teens and young adult students. These simple one to three-minute videos can be a
distraction for its users from completing their other necessary tasks, such as finishing
their homework and completing their household chores (Zulli, 2020). According to a
study conducted by Wojdan, Wdowiak, Witas, Drogon, and Brakowieck in 2020, It is
shown that TikTok causes various issues, including addiction, especially in kids and
teenagers. The increased usage of social media platforms by students is associated
with a notable shift in their study habits. The sudden change in students' study habits
may adversely impact their academic performance. The related literature focuses only
on the negative impact of the TikTok application on students and their academic
performances, specifically on students. The researchers are examining not only the
negative but also the positive impacts of Tiktok application towards the academic
performance of the students.
TikTok was originally known for short video clips that have evolved into a diverse
platform encompassing various topics and genres (Guo,2022; Kennedy, 2020).
However, using the TikTok application may have both positive and negative impacts,
especially on the academic performances of students. (Christopher & Wathi,
2022)found that using of TikTok application could be a distraction to students, while
Mekler (2021) suggested a potential negative connection between TikTok usage and
academic engagement. (Haleem 2020) highlighted the widespread disruption caused by
the pandemic, leading to the adoption of online learning worldwide. Changing academic
face-to-face learning into online learning is a challenge for students, it has a lot of
effects including negative effects among students (Alibudbud, 2021;Baltà-
Salvador.,2021; Chang 2021) TikTok may be distracting and disrupt the focus of the
students, but it can be used as a quick learning video clip for students, making it easier
for the students to analyze and study the videos with the specific topics they need, as it
summarizes everything that the students can learn more easily. TikTok's algorithm also
provides them with topic-related video clips based on the videos the students watched,
making it quicker and more efficient for the students to look for more related video clips.
Making TikTok useful and not too distracting for the students to use.
Tiktok application is one of the social media platforms that entertains every individual
user regardless of the user being a student. Many people mostly used Tiktok application
during the Covid-19 pandemic, mostly students as their source of entertainment and are
used to reduce individual stress. Moreover, Tiktok‟s special features during the Covid-
19 epidemic period attracted most of the students studying that time. Offering a platform
that can be used for entertainment, a platform where you can watch, upload short video
clips. It can be a meme or different categories according to your desire. According to
Dilon (2021) TikTok's ecosystem of influencers, dubbed "meme machines," which
upload on platform's 15 seconds video format, monetizing views, likes, comments, and
shares. However, TikTok has got a lot of controversies and challenges. The study of
Christoper et.al (2020) tried to analyzed how does the students academic performance
and mental health adopted to the TikTok application, especially in the new normal
modality because of increasing cases of Covid-19 students used to be study at their
home answering and reading the self learning material that has been given by their
teachers.
Researchers need to study more about how TikTok changes the way students feel
about studying and if it makes them put off their work. It‟s also important to watch and
see if TikTok has a lasting effect on how well students do in school over time. By
comparing students who use TikTok with those who don‟t, by doing that we can better
understand what the app does to their school results and understanding about the
academic effect of TikTok on students and exploring different students' backgrounds
that might influence how they use TikTok, and one of the most important is the teachers
perspectives and parent awareness, this involves looking at what teachers observe
about their students' and how parents guide their children in using TikTok.
The impact of TikTok on student's academic performance is a worldwide topic now, with
studies showing both positive and negative effects of using TikTok on students, as
years goes by TikTok application gained so much popularity just for posting short clip
videos, TikTok got people's attention especially students that it caused different effects
to their academic performance.
CHAPTER 3
Methodology
Method Of Research
The researchers will utilize quantitative method design. This research method will
answer a specific research question by showing statistical evidence that the data may
be addressed in a particular way. This will help the researchers to understand the
correlation between the impacts of TikTok and the academic performance of the
students.
The following stage is data collection, which comes after deciding on the instruments
and creating the study framework.
In order to facilitate the research process and administer surveys to the chosen grade
kids, prior consent from the school administration and coordination with grade level
teachers including their advising teacher will be requested before the study is initiated.
Next, a survey instrument will be designed to collect data regarding the influence of
TikTok on grade school pupils to academic achievements. The purpose of this survey is
to gather information about students' TikTok usage habits and any possible relationship
to their academic success.
A sample of grade pupils will be chosen when the questionnaire is created to ensure
that students from different demographic backgrounds and academic levels are
represented.
Following sample selection, the survey will be given out to gather information about
students' usage patterns on TikTok, the amount of time they spend there, and whether
or not they believe it has affected their academic performance.
Lastly, in order to make judgments on the effects of TikTok on grade 10 students on the
academic performance at Antipolo National High School for the academic 2023-2024.
The data gathered will be examined, analyzed, and reviewed.
By conducting statistical analysis, the researchers hope to ascertain how Tiktok affects
grade 10 academic performance at Antipolo National High School. The purpose of this
study is to look into the relationship between grade 10 students at Antipolo National
High School's Tiktok usage and academic achievement.
be also used to compute their average in the first quarter. For example, the average per
day spent on Tiktok was found to be 3.9 hours per day. The mean of academic
Mode. Mode will be used to determine the score that occurs the most based on
the data gathered. For example, the mode of time spent on TikTok is 4 hours per day.
