LESSON
Present Written Research
Methodology

Hello Senior High! In this lesson you will learn to present written research methodology.

Before we proceed, do you know that Chapter 3 of the research paper enables the readers
to determine how objective and ethical you are in conducting the research? Chapter 3 explains
the types and sources of data as well as the method you used in collecting and analyzing the
data you have gathered. This chapter makes it possible for other researchers to replicate your
research study for validation purposes (Baraceros, 2016).
Remember your lessons in quarter 4 of modules 1, 2, and 3 wherein you learned the
different qualitative research designs, data collection methods, and analysis procedures.
Integrating this learning will help you understand what is research methodology in this module.
This module will allow you to accomplish Chapter 3 of your research paper. Good luck!

What is Research Methodology?

The research methodology section of a research paper covers topics such as the
research design, research setting, sampling technique, research instrument, data collection
process, and data analysis procedures. Chapter 3 of the research paper is dedicated to the
research methods. Two key questions are answered by the research methodology: How is the
information gathered or generated? What procedure is used to analyze it?

How to Write the Chapter 3: Research Methodology

Step 1: Explain your research design or methodological approach.
Step 2: Describe the research locale and sampling procedure.
Step 3: Describe the research instrument.
Step 4: Describe your methods of data collection.
Step 5: Describe your methods of analysis.
Step 6: Evaluate and justify your methodological choices.

SECTIONS OF Content Guidelines
CHAPTER 3 By: McCombes (2019)
Research  Begin by describing your research design and approach.
Design (Ethnographic, phenomenological, case study, narrative,
historical, or grounded theory are examples of research
designs or approaches)
 Describe what research question or problem would you look
into for investigation. Is your problem seek to systematically
explain something's characteristics or to investigate a
subject that has raised concern?

 And what kind of data would you need to accomplish the

aim of your research?
 Would you need qualitative data (data that can be
expressed in words)?
 Will you need to collect primary data yourself, or will you
be relying on secondary data gathered by others?
 Can you collect descriptive data without interfering by
collecting observations?

 You can also start with a discussion of the reasoning and

assumptions that underpin your research methodology.
 Why is this the best method for resolving your research
questions?
 Is this a common procedure in your area of discipline?
or does it need to be justified?
 Is there something ethical or philosophical to consider?
 In this type of study, what are the conditions for validity
and reliability?
 For example, in a qualitative ethnography, you might want
to create contextual real-world information about a
community of people's attitudes, social structures, and
common beliefs. Since this methodology is less regulated
and more interpretive, you'll need to think about your role
as a researcher and how your involvement and perception
could have affected the results.
Research  Discuss the context in which the study will be carried out.
Locale  Describe the study's research site or venue.
Selection of the  Talk about the conditions you'll use to choose participants
Study and sources.
(Sampling  How would you locate and pick participants?
Procedure)  What method of sampling will you employ?
 How many people are expected to be included in the study?
Research  Explain what research instrument or tool you will use and
Instrument how you will apply this in data collection.
o Will you use an observation checklist? Diary or
journal?
o Will you use structured interview questions?
o Will you perform audio recording or video recording?
o Is the Interview Consent Form properly signed
before conducting the interview?

4
Data Collection  After you've explained your overall methodological
Procedure approach, you should go over your data collection methods
in detail.
 Discuss your role in gathering data (for example, will you be
an active participant or a passive observer?).

 In Interviews or focus groups

 Specify when, where, and how the interviews will
take place.
 Are the interviews going to be structured, semi-
structured, or unstructured?
 What will be the length of the interviews and how
these will be recorded?

 Participant’s observation
 Describe where, when, and how you'll conduct the
ethnography or observation.
 What community or group will you observe and how will
you gain access to them?
 How long will you spend on the research and where will
it take place?
 How will you perform to the community?
 How can you keep records of your data (audiovisual
recordings, note-taking)?

 Existing data
 Describe how you'll choose case study materials for
your research (such as texts or images).
 What kind of materials will be examined?
 How can you gather and pick these materials?

Data Analysis  The next step is to explain how you intend to process and
analyze the data. Avoid going into too much detail—at this
point, you should not be discussing or explaining any of
your findings.

 Your study of qualitative research will be focused on words,

pictures, and observations (often involving some form of
textual analysis). Analysis procedures that can be used
include:
 Content analysis: classifying and debating the
meanings of terms, phrases, and sentences.
 Thematic analysis: coding and analyzing data for
general themes and trends.
 Discourse analysis is the study of communication and
interpretation in the light of their social context.
