 Why is SAP’s Strategy Unicode Only?

Because most of our customers need Unicode, e.g. for…

Global business processes such as global HR systems or global Master Data
Management
Offering Web services to their customers: global master data containing multiple local
language characters
J2EE and .NET integration (Java speaks Unicode only!)
Collaborative business: integration of third-party products that run on different code
pages
Use of local language varieties (e.g., Brazilian Portuguese and Portuguese Portuguese).
This is only possible with new language keys in Unicode systems.
New countries which require local languages for legal reasons such as FI reporting.
Example: Vietnam. Vietnamese language has a complex script and is only supported
in Unicode systems.

 Release Strategy

All new installations of SAP NetWeaver and SAP applications based on SAP
NetWeaver 7.0 SR3 (SP Stack 14) and later are Unicode based.

New installation of MDMP configuration is desupported starting with SAP NetWeaver

2004. Existing Single Code Page installations therefore cannot be switched to MDMP.

Existing MDMP configurations are not supported starting with SAP NetWeaver 7.0
(ERP 6.0) and all future NetWeaver and ERP enhancement packages.

 Internationalized Software With Unicode

The Unicode Standard was adopted by industry leaders (e.g., Apple, HP, IBM
JustSystem, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, Sun, Sybase, Unisys, and many others)

Unicode is required by modern standards such as XML, Java, ECMAScript

(JavaScript), Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), CORBA 3.0, and
Wireless Markup Language (WML)

Unicode is the official way to implement International Organization for

Standardization (ISO)/International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 10646 and
is supported in many operating systems and all modern browsers
