Dear admissions committee,

I’m writing you this letter of recommendation as a best friend and a sister of your applicant Malak
Karkas. She asked me to do it and I wanted to help her to make her dreams come true, she is a
talented and smart girl that needs to find something better for her future. I believe in her, and her
teachers do as well.

I know Malak for over 12 years which means that our bond is very strong. I met her first time as the
daughter of my dad’s best friend, then we become very close, and since our houses were next to
each other we were spending the whole time together. I liked her because she’s friendly and social
and I’m the opposite because I’m an introverted and calm human being. Even our personalities are
different we were a good match, our energy matched so well that we used to do a lot of activities
together and play different sports. By the way, Malak is a real athlete when it comes to running,
playing basketball, and boxing, I know that she didn’t get the opportunity to be a national player but I
believe that she will make her way out like she always does, as she played for some small
competitions since she was in 6th grade after her coaches encouraged her to do so.

Her activities were kinda what she is in life, she loves community service and she was always there to
help old people or orphans. She is very kind-hearted that she was taking other people’s copies of
their ID cards and she was giving them to her father to find them a job. She cares and people used to
admire her for that. She was very decisive when she told me that she wanted to create a club in her
high school which was very unusual in a Moroccan public school because we normally don’t have
clubs or any activity to join. Malak did create a club with her friends who were interested in that, this
made her very close to the teachers and the school principals. I’m proud of her.

We didn’t live next to each other for so long because Malak has moved to another city with her
mom, and it was very hard for me and many of her friends because she was everyone’s favorite nice
person. She went through so many struggles when she was 10 years old and I was very worried about
her mental health, I was scared to lose that active and amusable sister, and guess what she survived
and it was unbelievable especially for a kid and without therapy. That’s why we call her « warrior »
because she is. Also, her second nickname is « cookies », only the close ones know about it, we call
her that because she loves cookies, and one day she ate all the cookies in the house that her mom
prepared for her anniversary which was very funny.

Malak as I said before will and always be a strong person. 5 months ago, she lost her dad, and I didn’t
even imagine how she’s going to handle her loss, because she loves him and he was her friend and
losing him will be so painful for her, they say « bad things happen to good people ». I was by her side
all that period, she’s a true fighter because she didn’t let sorrow dominate her thoughts, she kept
preparing her application to your college because she has a goal to work on.

The past summer, I was diagnosed with depression, and I was scared to lose her because I was kinda
mentally ill and I was so scared that my mental illness will push her away. She was very conscious
about the situation, and she didn’t leave, she stayed until I made it. She helped me to get through
this and she always calls to tell me her news, like she just explodes on the phone, I used to listen to
every part of what she said.

Malak represents for me a soulmate, I wish her a stroke of good luck for her application, and I
guarantee you that she is an easy-going and very intelligent person, her qualities will be so helpful to
be part of your community and to show her skills. I know that she’s a very competitive and selective
student even if we didn’t study together, I see her ranking and grades which made me very confident
about her career as a strong and brilliant woman.
Sincerely,

Kawtar Lahmr.
