LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET IN MUSIC 6

Worksheet no. 1 Quarter 4 Week 4
TEXTURE

Name of Student:
Learning Area-Grade Level: MAPEH - Music Grade 6__________________________
Date:

Texture is the thinness or thickness of sound. It refers to the

combination of melody, harmony and rhythm of a given piece. In other
words, it is how the melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic materials are
combined in a composition, thus determining the overall quality of the
sound in a musical piece. A thick texture contains many “layers” of voices or
instruments. A certain musical piece may have a thin or thick texture.
Two types of texture:
a. Vocal texture refers to the type of different musical “voices” in a
piece of music. This includes categories like monophonic, polyphonic and
homophonic. Solo singing has thin texture while singing with a partner or
group and accompaniment has thick texture. Likewise, singing a partner
song or a round song can make the texture thicker as harmony is created.
Solo singing has the thinnest vocal texture while choral singing with
accompaniment creates a thick vocal texture as it is composed of several
voices singing with an accompaniment.
Try to sing the song Row, Row Your Boat in solo. Then get a partner
and sing together the two songs Row, Row Your Boat and Are you Sleeping
Brother John at the same time as partner song. Can you compare the
thickness of the sound? Yes, a partner song has thicker texture than singing
in solo. What about singing the partner song with a guitar accompaniment?
Yes, it even makes the texture thicker than singing the partner song without
accompaniment.
b. Instrumental texture means the overall sound created by multiple
instruments in music. It is the combined timbre of a group of instruments.
Playing a solo instrument has a thin instrumental texture while an
instrumental ensemble creates a thick instrumental texture as it is
composed of several instruments sounded and played together.
