Second Week of Advent

-PEACE-
-December 9, 2019-
I.Introduction:
In this second week of Advent, we are still waiting for and preparing for the coming of Jesus. We hope to make
Jesus a part of our lives, not just at Christmas but all year long. We can prepare ourselves for Jesus through
prayer and turning ourselves to love, hope, faith, justice and kindness. Prayer opens our hearts to let God, love
and faith in, and let’s out our hate and fear. Prayer is like a window through which the light of God shines. Let us
this week continue in hope and prayer to keep this window open. This week we light the second candle which
means “peace”. We remember the gift of Peace we have in Christ. Peace is a gift that we must be prepared for
and must work for. God gives us the gift of peace when we turn to him working together in faith.

Every part of the world needs the light of Christ’s peace and the work of His peacemakers. The way of love of
Jesus is the only hope for our troubled world. Only as the Prince of Peace rules in our hearts will the star of hope
burn brightly in the night sky of our weary world.

II. Lighting of the first and second candles of the Advent Wreath.

OPENING PRAYER
Leader :
Antiphon- Come, let us worship the Lord, the King who is to come.

PSALM 100

Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth.

Serve the Lord with gladness.
Come before him, singing for joy.

Know that he, the Lord, is God.

He made us, we belong to him.
We are his people, the sheep of his flock.

Go within his gates, giving thanks.

Enter his temple with songs of praise.
Give thanks to him and bless his name.

Indeed, how good is the Lord,

eternal his merciful love.
He is faithful from age to age.

Leader: Glory be to the Father...

Assembly: As it was in the beginning is now and will be forever. Amen

Antiphon : Come, let us worship the Lord, the King who is to come.

Commnentator: Let us now listen to the readings.

A.First Reading ( Isaiah 35: 1-10)

Leader: A reading from the Book of the prophet Isaiah

The wilderness and the parched land will exult;

the Arabah will rejoice and bloom;

Like the crocus it shall bloom abundantly,
and rejoice with joyful song.
The glory of Lebanon will be given to it,
the splendor of Carmel and Sharon;
They will see the glory of the Lord,
the splendor of our God.
Strengthen hands that are feeble,
make firm knees that are weak,
Say to the fearful of heart:
Be strong, do not fear!
Here is your God,
he comes with vindication;
With divine recompense
he comes to save you.
Then the eyes of the blind shall see,
and the ears of the deaf be opened;
Then the lame shall leap like a stag,
and the mute tongue sing for joy.

For waters will burst forth in the wilderness,

and streams in the Arabah.
The burning sands will become pools,
and the thirsty ground, springs of water;
The abode where jackals crouch
will be a marsh for the reed and papyrus.
A highway will be there,
called the holy way;
No one unclean may pass over it,
but it will be for his people; no traveler,
not even fools, shall go astray on it.
No lion shall be there,
nor any beast of prey approach,
nor be found.
But there the redeemed shall walk,
And the ransomed of the Lord shall return,
and enter Zion singing,
crowned with everlasting joy;
They meet with joy and gladness,
sorrow and mourning flee away.

Leader: The word of the Lord.

Assembly: Thanks be to God.

Leader: A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a
virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The
angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said
to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and
you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give
him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never
end.”

“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
So the holy one to be born will be called[a] the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child
in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will
ever fail.”

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

Leader: The Gospel of the Lord.

.
Assembly: Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Reflection:
Today’s Gospel opens with the appearance of the Angel Gabriel to Mary. One of the most powerful statements
in this passage is the angel’s message to Mary: “the Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High
will overshadow you.” Take a moment and ask ourselves: When in our life have we experienced the power of
the Most High overshadowing us? When have we sensed God’s presence in an almost tangible way? What were
the circumstances of our life at that time?

The gift is Jesus comes to us every day! However, we need to be open, alert and attentive or we may miss His
coming completely. Most likely we will not have an angel of God appearing to us as Mary experienced.
However, we may have a friend, family member or a stranger appear when we need them the most. This person
may be God’s angel for me today. Today open your eyes and hearts! Expect and welcome the “angels” God will
send to you!
