Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each

SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you
need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of
the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you
will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can
best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And
read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

Let’s try to analyze these:

1.Amaya was asked to express the given numbers 3 x 3 x 3 x 3; 3 raised to the

fourth power; and 3 with an exponent of four into shorter number or exponential
number. How will she write it?
What do we call the number? What do we call each part of the said number?

2. Because of the Pandemic we are suffering right now, Pepito Manaloto decided
to donate 2 cavans of rice to the needy on Monday, 4 cavans on Tuesday, 8 cavans
on Wednesday, 16 cavans on Thursday, and so on. If the pattern continues, how
many cavans of rice will he donate on Sunday? How many cavans of rice will be
donated for the whole week? What kind of person is Pepito Manaloto?

Here’s how we solve the problems.

The expression 34 is called
1. The expression 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 can be
exponential number or exponential
expressed as 34, same through as 3
notation wherein 3 is called the base
raised to four can be expressed as
and 4 is called the exponent. The
34 and 3 with an exponent of 4
exponent tells how many times the
as 34.
base is used as a factor. Thus, in the
expression 34, the exponent 4 tells
that the base 3 is used as a factor 4
times.
exponent
34 base

2. The pattern shows that Pepito Manaloto was able to donate twice as many
cavans of rice as he donated the previous day. In this case, he will be able to
donate 32 cavans on Friday, 64 cavans on Saturday. Therefore, Pepito will
donate 128 cavans of rice on Sunday. From this pattern, it shows that his
donations on Tuesday is twice his donations on Monday or 2 x 2 = 4;
Wednesday is twice his donations on Tuesday or 2 x (2 x 2) = 8, and so on. We
can write this as follows:

Monday : 21 = 2
Tuesday : 22 = 2x2=4
Wednesday : 23 = 2x2x2= 8
Thursday : 24 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 16
Friday : 25 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 32
Saturday : 26 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 64
Sunday : 27 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 128

Adding all the cavans of rice he donated from Monday to Sunday,

Pepito will have a total give-away of 254 cavans for that week.
