Republic Act 8293, Section 176 states that: No copyright shall subsist in
any work of the Government of the Philippines. However, prior approval of the
government agency or office wherein the work is created shall be necessary for the
exploitation of such work for a profit. Such agency or office may, among other things,
impose as a condition the payment of royalties.

MELC: Characterize weather disturbances in the Philippines and describe their effects to
daily life
Objectives:
1. Identify the different weather disturbances in the Philippines
2. Describe the effects of the different weather disturbances to daily life
3. Characterize the weather disturbances in the Philippines
Let’s Try
Directions: Read each question carefully. Write the letter of the correct answer on
the space provided before the number.

hour?

on Tuesday. You heard from the news that an expected typhoon may
landfall in your locality on that day. What are you going to do?
A. I am going to tell my teacher to have the fieldtrip.
B. Ignore the news and pretend that everything will be okey.
C. I am going to inform my teacher so that she will cancel our fieldtrip.
D. I have nothing to do with the typhoon.
______9. How does Public Storm Warning Signal No.3 affect the environment?
A. No damage to very light damage
B. Light to moderate damage
C. Moderate to heavy damage
D. Heavy to very heavy damage
______10. Public Storm Warning Sinal No. 5 is raised in your locality. What are the
possible effects of the typhoon to the environment?
A. Damage to the affected communities can be very heavy.
B. Winds may bring light to moderate damage to the exposed
communities.
C. Electrical power distribution and communication services severely
disrupted.
D. Moderate to heavy damage may be experienced particularly in the
agricultural and industrial sectors.

From June – September the Philippines frequently experiences more rains
brought by Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), a warm and humid air that blows the
Philippines from the southwest direction. Once this air cools down, it will eventually
form clouds. Theses clouds will then accumulate more moisture and then condense,
which will fall as rain later. Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) on the other hand, brings
cold air during the “ber-months” and rain over the east coast of our country.
Weather disturbances affect our lives as it causes great damage to our
environment and to life. Common weather disturbances are storms, cyclones, or
typhoons. These calamities which destroy everything in its path. It causes flood that
damages our sources of income and foods resulting to scarcity of foods.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services
Administration (PAGASA) keeps the track of cyclones that enter the Philippine Area
of Responsibility (PAR)
Classifications of tropical cyclones according to strength of winds:
• Tropical Disturbance
It is an isolated weather system with an apparent circulation. It is
characterized by a poorly developed wind circulation. This is commonly
observed throughout the wet tropics and subtropics.
• Tropical Depression
It is a weak low-pressure disturbance with a definite surface
circulation. A tropical depression has a maximum wind speed up to 63
kilometers per hour (kph). It is most common in the equatorial region
or the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ). The ITCZ is the belt of low
pressure which circles the Earth generally near the equator.
• Tropical Storm
It is a weather disturbance that has a wind force of 64 – 118 kilometers
per hour.
• Typhoon
It is an intense tropical cyclone with maximum wind speed of 118 to
220 kph. Most of the time, a typhoon is accompanied by heavy rains
and strong winds.
Study the table below.

Secondary
3 18 121-170 -Moderate to heavy damage

4 12 171-220 -Heavy to very heavy damage
5 12 more than 220 -Very heavy to widespread damage

Let’s Practice
________1. Weather disturbances cause great damage to our environment and to life.
________2. Northeast Monsoon brings cold air and rain over the east coast of our
country.
________3. Typhoon causes flood that may result to destruction of lives and
properties.
________4. Suspension of classes from all levels is done if PSWS no.3 is raised.
________5. Public Storm Signal No.1 brings heavy to very heavy damage to the
environment.
4
Let’s Do More
ACTIVITY 1 Directions: Match column A with its description
written at column B.
A B
________1. PSWS 1 a. Winds moving at a speed of 220kph or above may
be expected in at least 12 hours.
