Source: The passage below was a description of an important French leader.
This famous leader was born in 1769 on a French island, a son of a lesser nobleman. He
received his military training in France and joined the French Revolution as soon as it
began. He was made a general by the republican government and later he led the French
army to destroy the First Coalition against his country. His victories made him a national
hero among the French people and soon he established control over the French
government. Within France, he introduced a number of major reforms. Outside France, his
armies repeatedly defeated all the great European powers except Britain. By 1804, he felt
strong enough to make himself the Emperor of France. By 1808, he ruled or controlled
almost all the European continent. Yet, he increasingly ignored the feelings of the people
under his rule and made a series of military errors. As a result, he was finally defeated in
1815 and sent into exile to the island of St. Helena.
