how does social media negatively affect teens
• Yes social media use can also negatively affect teens, distracting them, disrupting their
sleep, and exposing them to bullying, rumor spreading, unrealistic views of other people's
lives and peer pressure.
• The risks might be related to how much social media teens use. A 2019 study of more than
6,500 12- to 15-year-olds in the U.S. found that those who spent more than three hours a
day using social media might be at heightened risk for mental health problems. Another
2019 study of more than 12,000 13- to 16-year-olds in England found that using social
media more than three times a day predicted poor mental health and well-being in teens.
• Other studies also have observed links between high levels of social media use and
depression or anxiety symptoms. A 2016 study of more than 450 teens found that greater
social media use, nighttime social media use and emotional investment in social media —
such as feeling upset when prevented from logging on — were each linked with worse
sleep quality and higher levels of anxiety and depression.

youth
• Social media can also pose risks. For your child, these risks include: being exposed to inappropriate or upsetting content, like mean
aggressive, violent or sexual comments or images. uploading inappropriate content, like embarrassing or provocative photos or videos of
themselves or others
• It is normal for teens to have dangerous thoughts when they are using social media. They are exposed to all sorts of online d angers on social
media which include cyberbullying, pedophilia, sexting, and pornography.
• All of these online threats are damaging to children’s mental health and wellbeing, and something needs to be done about them. Besides these
usual online threats, there are also subtle, everyday online dangers of social media that remain either unknown, ignored, or minimized.
• Children and teens need to be educated about these unknown online dangers lurking on social media and set some appropriate boundaries for
them to stay protected on these platforms. Let us discuss some everyday online dangers of social media for youth.
Danger of social media to teenage
• Other than Cyberbullying , exposure to pornography
• Exposure to inappropriate, upsetting, or adult-themed content Oversharing in inappropriate and risky ways Cyber bullying
Strangers Erosion of personal privacy Inability to regulate focus and attention
• Although there are important benefits, social media can also provide platforms for bullying and exclusion,
unrealistic expectations about body image and sources of popularity, normalization of risk-taking behaviors,
and can be detrimental to mental health.
•
how to prevent inappropriate content on
social media
• Tools like parental controls can help to protect your children from accessing inappropriate content,
but you can’t check everything they see on the internet. You need to help them avoid unsuitable
content, and cope with it if they see it. The first step is to talk to them about it.
