P6 Water Cycle Revision 2 (Answer Key)

Section A (MCQ)

Qn Ans Remarks
1 3 Ice in A will all melt. Water in both beakers will evaporate into water
vapour. Since water in B has a higher temperature than water in A,
water in B will evaporate into water vapour at a faster rate.

2 1 Flame in set–up B was hotter. Water in set–up B will boil and turn into
steam at a faster rate than water in A. Less water will remain in B.

Note: Impurities will increase boiling point. More heat is required to

bring a substance with impurities to boiling point.

3 1 A thicker towel would mean the material is a poorer conductor of heat.

Water in a thicker towel would gain heat from the surroundings and
evaporate into water vapour at a slower rate.

A wetter towel would mean the towel contained more water at the
start of the experiment. A longer duration is required for all the water
to be evaporated into water vapour.

4 2 Under the sun, water in puddle 2 gains heat from the surroundings
and evaporate into water vapour at a faster rate than water in puddle
1.

5 3 Sweat on the body contains water. Water gains heat from the body
and evaporates into water vapour. As the body loses heat to the
water, temperature of the body will decrease, thus body cools down.

Section B (Open-ended)

Qn Answers
6 (a) W, X, Y (1m)
(b) Water in W had the greatest amount of exposed surface area,
followed by X and then Y (1m). Water in W will gain heat from the
surroundings and evaporate into water vapour at the fastest rate,
followed by X and then Y (1m).

7 (a) Jenny, Candice, Annie (1m).

(b) Warm air will increase the temperature of the surroundings (1/2m).
When hair is brushed and spread out, water in hair strands will have
a larger exposed surface area (1/2m). The combination of using
warm air and brush will enable water to gain heat from the
surrounding and evaporate into water vapour at the fastest rate (1m).

8 (a) Presence of water and oxygen (1m)

(b) Z.
(c) Water in Z will have the greatest exposed surface area (1/2m). This
allows water in Z to gain heat from the surroundings and evaporate
into water vapour at the fastest rate (1/2m). Z will have the least
amount of water (1/2m). Since water is needed for mould to grow, Z
is the least likely to be mouldy (1/2m).

9 (a) Water in the beaker gained heat from the surroundings (1/2m) and
evaporated into water vapour (1/2m).

(b) The silica gel inside absorbed the water vapour so the amount of
water vapour in set–up L was kept to the minimum (1m).

Note: Do not accept “There was silica gel inside set–up L”.

10 (a) The size of the stomata increased from 6am to 10am (1/2m) and then
decreased from 10am to 1pm (1/2m).

(b) The surrounding temperature is greater from 10am to 1pm than from
6am to 9am (1m). This may cause the plants to lose excessive water
(1/2m). By reducing the size of the stomata from 10am onwards, the
plants lose less water to the surroundings (1/2m).

11 (a) Unchanged. The layer of oil prevents water in the bottle from
evaporating into water vapour (1m).

(b) Water in A has a larger exposed surface area than water in B (1/2m).
However the exposed surface area for the water in B would start to
decrease with time (1/2m) while the exposed surface area of the
water in B remains constant (1/2m) and would be larger than that of
the water in A after some time (1/2m).

12 (a) When the pages are opened, water in the books would have a larger
exposed surface area (1/2m). Water can gain heat from the
surroundings and evaporate into water vapour at a faster rate (1/2m).

(b) The presence of wind can increase the rate of evaporation (1m).
(c) Place the book under the sun (or any other logical method which will
increase the amount of heat the book receives) (1/2m). When the
book is under the sun, water in the book gains heat from the
surroundings and evaporates into water vapour at a faster rate
(1/2m).

13 (a) The amount of exposed surface area for the water in the containers
are not the same (1m). All the containers used should be identical
(1m).

(b) The rate of evaporation of the water in the containers is now affected
by the number of ink drops and the amount of exposed surface area
of the water (1m).

(c) The amount of water left in each container (1/2m) at the end of the
experiment (1/2m).
