INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Time management and effective study habits play a vital role in the fast-paced

world of academia, mastering time management and cultivating effective study habits

are indispensable skills for college students striving to excel academically and maintain

a healthy work-life balance. Attending classes and completing assignments to

participating in extracurricular activities and maintaining personal well-being, students

face constant pressure to manage their time efficiently and optimize their study routines.

According to Oliva (2021), time management of the students is not that good

because they don't set their priorities well. Nevertheless, proper guidance of the

instructors and motivational support is vital and with more effective pedagogical

strategies and methods that will fit with the learning styles of the students for them to

develop appropriate study habits which could lead to better performance with their

academics.

In the thesis conducted by Salle, Santos, and Vasailaje (2011), In terms of study

skills, the respondents have the same habits in their textbook reading skills, note taking

skills, memory skills, test preparation skills, concentration skills and time management

skills. Furthermore, implementing active learning strategies and skills can enhance

learning and critical thinking abilities to increase productivity and positive impacts on

both academic performance and personal well-being.

There are numerous reasons why some students have poor time management

and study habits, such as overwhelming responsibilities, distractions, lack of planning,

and inadequate skills contribute to students’ lack of time management skills and study

habit. This research paper explores the significance of time management and study

habits in the college setting, shedding light on practical strategies and techniques that

empower students to navigate the academic landscape with confidence and achieve

their academic goals.

Statement of the Problem

Lack of effective time management is one of the main issues faced by lots of

students in all curriculums and courses. With demanding academic schedules and

personal commitments, students often struggle to balance their various

responsibilities efficiently.

Another problem the students are facing is the prevalence of inefficient study habits

among college students. Many students may not have developed effective

techniques for organizing and maximizing their study time, resulting in difficulty in

comprehending and retaining complex subject matter.

Without utilizing their time effectively or employing effective study techniques it can

have a direct impact on the academic performance of every college student that can

result to overwhelming workloads and potential setbacks.

Research Problem

The purpose of this study is to know the time management and study habits among the

college students of Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1. Course

1.2. Year Level

1.3. Age

1.4. Gender

2. To what extent do the respondents engage in time management practices?

3. To what extent do the respondents engage in their study habits practices?

4. Is there a significant relationship between respondents’ profile and the following

extent of engagement on the practices of;

4.1 Time management and

4.2 Study habits?

Theoretical Framework

To effectively manage time, individuals must analyze their daily, weekly, or long-

term schedules. By applying the principles and techniques of time management, one

can allocate time for various activities according to their significance and immediacy.

This study tapped on The Pickle Jar Theory, also known as the 'Big Rocks Theory',

emphasizes prioritization and effective time allocation. It is crucial to recognize and

tackle the most important tasks first before dealing with less crucial matters. By

prioritizing and managing time effectively, individuals can guarantee the

accomplishment of essential tasks while still attending smaller ones (Nekvinda,

2024).

Regardless of what major, gender, or year level, studying is an essential part of

the learning process. Whether choosing to study in a library or a coffee shop, with

tea or coffee, the most important thing is to actively engage in the learning process.

To make the most of one’s study time, it's important to not only establish a

productive routine, but also focus on learning material that genuinely interests an

individual (Schrimpf, 2022).

Conceptual Framework

Understanding time management and study habits among college students delves

into the intricate balance between academic responsibilities, personal commitments,

and cognitive processes shaping students' learning behaviors. This framework seeks

to explain the significance between individual characteristics, environmental factors,

and academic techniques. This study aims to uncover the underlying mechanisms

driving effective time management and study habits among college students, thus

contributing to the development of educational practices tailored to enhance student

success in higher education.

Significance of the Study

The study will be a significant endeavor in time management and study habits

among the college students in Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria. This study will

also be beneficial to the students, the teachers, and the institution in knowing the time

management and study habit of the college students in Colegio de Santa Catalina de

Alejandria.

For students, they can be guided on how to manage their time in a way that it

won’t be a problem to their academic performance.

For the teachers and institution, to manage the students’ performance properly

and assess on what they lack in terms of their academic performance.

For future researchers, they can use this study as a guide for their future

research about students’ time management and study habits.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The study will focus on forty (40) college students of COSCA specifically,

knowing their time management and study habits. This research will include ten (10)

college students in every college department in Colegio de Santa Catalina de

Alejandria.

The limitations of this study will rely predominantly on quantitative data, limiting

the exploration of qualitative experiences and perspectives related to time

management and study habits among college students in COSCA.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

According to Kumar (2023), Time management for students (and everyone else)

is important every day. It's about managing the time you have and optimizing it for

focus, productivity and most importantly, balance. This is one of the most difficult jobs

for students as they have to perform well and get good results while managing the

pressure of schoolwork, homework, projects, etc. and maintains social life. Proper time

management allows students to be more resilient, organized, and learn better. Time

management skills can help students stay on track and cope with the pressure of

additional responsibilities.

Time planning is the most integrated predictor; it is very important and has a

significant impact on individual and collective performance and achievement. Students

often complain that they don't have enough time to complete all the assignments given

to them. Trying to read all assigned books and chapters, meet paper deadlines, and

participate in extracurricular activities can leave college students feeling like they don't

have enough time to complete all their assignments properly (Razali et al, 2018).

Using study skills and techniques can provide a great opportunity to improve

student performance. School performance and the achievement of educational goals

are influenced by many factors, the most important of which are an individual's learning

styles. Using diverse and effective learning styles improves student performance. The

conditions of place of residence, especially the place of study, play an important role in

the study habits of students. Failure to observe the necessary standards and the lack of
suitable environment and conditions can have a negative effect on students’

performance. (Jafari et al., 2019).

According to the study of Rowell (2021) Students’ study sessions outside class

are important learning opportunities in college courses. However, we often rely on

students to actively learn without much guidance. Students often feel that they learn

more from simple exercises than from difficult exercises. For example, students may

feel that they learn more when they re-read a passage of text several times than when

they are asked about the same topic.

Learners are self-responsible of their academics as they just seek guidance from

their teachers, but take decisions as well as manage all activities themselves. It`s a

good idea to write stuff down, your ideas and thoughts are important (Alyami et al.,
