Main clause = (It) is a mystery

Main clause = The man was my uncle
Subordinate Clause = who received the medal
Noun Clause

Ask ‘what’ to the verb in the main clause to get the subordinate clause
as an answer
 That he is rich is quite natural
Main clause = (It) is quite natural
Subordinate Noun Clause = that he is rich
 I explained to him why I failed
Main clause = I explained to him
Subordinate Noun Clause = why I failed
 The judges will award whichever painting they like.
Main clause = The judges will award
Subordinate Noun Clause = whichever painting they like.
Adjective Clause

Ask ‘which’ to the noun in the main clause to get the subordinate
clause as answer
 I bought a house which is old
Main clause = I bought a house
which is old = Subordinate Adjective Clause.

 The umbrella which is red is mine

The Umbrella is mine = Main Clause


Which is red= Subordinate Adjective Clause.
Adverb clause
Adverb clause of Subordinators Function
Time When, whenever, while, till, Ask question ‘when’ or ‘how long’
until, after, before, since
Place Where, wherever Ask question ‘where’
Reason Since, as, because Ask question ‘why’
Manner as, as if Ask question ‘how’
Purpose In order that, so that, such that It shows purpose
Contrast / concession / supposition Though, even though It shows contrast
condition If, unless, whether, had It shows condition
Result So … that, such… that It shows the effect of something
Comparison As.. as, than, It shows comparison
Adverb Clause of Time

1.I was not at home when my friend came to see me.


Ans: I was not at home = Main Clause
When my friend came to see me = subordinate adverb
clause of time.

2. Stay here until I return.


Stay here = main clause
until I return= subordinate adverb clause of time.
Adverb Clause of Place

1. I shall follow you wherever you go.


Ans: I shall follow you = Main clause
Wherever you go = subordinate adverb clause of place.

2. The dogs go where their master goes.


= main clause
= subordinate adverb clause of place
Adverb Clause of Purpose

1. He ran fast so that he could win the race.


Ans: He ran fast = Main clause
So that he could win the race = subordinate adverb clause of purpose.

2. He worked hard in order that he might clear the test.


= main clause
= subordinate adverb clause of purpose

3. We must find a solution such that it would please everybody.


= Main clause
= SC adverb clause of purpose
Adverb Clause of Result

1. He ran so fast that he fell down..


Ans: He ran so fast = Main clause
That he fell down = subordinate adverb clause of Result.

2. He conducted himself in such a dignified manner that even his enemies


praised him.
he conducted himself in such a dignified manner = main clause
that even his enemies praised him = subordinate adverb clause of result.
Adverb Clause of Condition

1. If it rains, I will not go out to play.


Ans: I will not go out to play = Main clause
If it rains = subordinate adverb clause of condition

2. Unless she works hard, she will not pass the examination.
Ans: She will not pass the examination= Main Clause
Unless she works hard = Subordinate Adverb clause of condition.
Adverb Clause of Manner

She behaves as if she is a queen.


Ans: She behaves: Main Clause
as if she is a queen: Subordinate Adverb Clause of manner

You should do as you like.


Ans: : you should do: Main Clause
as you like: Subordinate Adverb Clause of manner .
Adverb Clause of comparison

She is taller than her brother.


Ans: She is taller: Main Clause
than her brother: Subordinate Adverb Clause of
comparison .

Anne is as intelligent as her sister Margot.

Adverb Clause of Concession / Contrast

Although he is rich, he is a miser


Ans: He is a miser: Main Clause
Although he is rich: Subordinate Adverb Clause of concession /
contrast .

I will not hate him even if he hates me.


Ans: I will not hate him: Main Clause
Even if he hates me: Subordinate Adverb Clause of
concession / contrast .
Adverb Clause of Reason

He did not write the exam because he was ill.


He did not write the exam = Main Clause
because he was ill = Subordinate Adverb Clause of Reason.

He was punished since as he had not submitted his project.


He was punished: Main Clause
Since / as he had not submitted his project =Subordinate
Adverb Clause of Reason.
Imp: ‘If, when, where, whether,’ can also be
noun clause as well as adverb clause

Imp: ‘which, where, that,who’ can also be


noun clause as well as adjective clause.
