Single phase fully controlled Rectifier.

Date: 07/04/2021
Name: Kumar Pallav Singh Rathore
Roll No: EE20M084
Objective: Design a single phase fully controlled rectifier using thyristor semiconductor
switches with supply voltage of 230V RMS 50Hz as a input source feeding resistive load of
10ohms.

Theory: In the fully-controlled rectifier configuration, the average DC load voltage is

controlled using two thyristors per half-cycle. Thyristors SCR1 and SCR4 are fired together as
a pair during the positive half-cycle, while thyristors SCR3 and SCR4 are also fired together
as a pair during the negative half-cycle. That is 180o after SCR1 and SCR4.
Then during continuous conduction mode of operation the four thyristors are constantly
being switched as alternate pairs to maintain the average or equivalent DC output voltage.
As with the half-controlled rectifier, the output voltage can be fully controlled by varying the
thyristors firing delay angle (α)

The output voltage and firing angle relation is given in next page
 Simulink Model:
Taking firing angle= 45 Degree

 The waveform of firing angle for T1,T2 and T3,T4 is shown below:

 Source Voltage and Output Voltage:

By varying the trigger angle we can vary the output dc voltage across the load. Hence we can control
the dc output power flow to the load. Hence we can control the dc output power flow to the load.
For trigger angle, 0 to 90
Cos is positive and hence Vdc is positive and converter operates as a Controlled Rectifier.
Power flow is from the ac source to load
For trigger angle, 90 to 180
Cos is negative and hence Vdc is negative and converter operates as a Line commuted converter.
Power flows from the load ckt. to the i/p ac source. The inductive load energy is fed back to the i/p
source.
 Output voltage waveform when the inductor is added with load circuit: L=0.1H

 Output Dc current (just continuous): L=0.0318H

Suitable inductor so that the peak to peak to peak ripple is less than 2.5% than the average
output voltage upon hit and trail method found to be 1.96H.

 The graph is shown below.

Ripple%= (1.466-1.428)/1.428 *100

Upon calculation the value of ripple was approx. equals to 2.5%

 Harmonic spectrum of the source current.

Considering the starting time of FFt analysis as 0.01 and number of samples equals to 50
The value THD calculated after FFT equals to 40.36%.
