Marriage and Divorce Statistics 2020

Number of marriages increases by 8.9% in 2020


According to administrative data of the Ministry of Justice the total number of marriage
contracts in Saudi Arabia reached 150,117 in 2020, increasing by 8.9% compared to
2019. The total number of divorces reached 57,595 in 2020, increasing by 12.7% from
2019.

Marriage rate of Saudi Population increases by 10.6% in 2020

• The number of marriages per 1,000 of the total population of 15 years and older
(general marriage rate) reached 5.67 in 2020, increasing by 6.2% from 2019. For the
Saudi population, the general marriage rate reached 9.60 per 1000 Saudi population
(15-year-old and older) with growth rate of 10.6% from 2019.

• The highest number of marriages per 1,000 of the Saudi population of 15 years and
older was recorded in Al-Jouf (18.96), followed by Northern Borders (12.56) and Hail
(12.23). The lowest general marriage rates for Saudis were recorded in the Eastern
Region (7.92), followed by Makkah Al-Mukarramah (8.67) and Al-Riyadh (8.72).

• The favorite months to get married in 2020 were August (12.4% of all marriages in
2020) and September (12.5%).

Divorce rate for Saudi Population increases by 13.8% in 2020


• The general divorce rate for the total population (15-year-old and older) reached
2.18 per 1000 population with a growth rate 10.1% from 2019. For the Saudi
population, the general divorce rate reached 3.64 per 1000 Saudi population (15-
year-old and older) with a growth rate 13.8% from 2019.
• The highest number of divorces per 1,000 of the Saudi population of 15 years and
older was recorded in Al-Jouf (5.07), followed by Hail (4.47) and Northern Borders
(4.42). The lowest general divorce rates for Saudis were recorded in Jazan (2.50),
followed by the Eastern Region (2.84) and Al-Baha (2.84).
• Most divorces happened in the end of the year, during the months of October
(14.6% of all divorces in 2020), November (13.9%) and December (14.5%).

Methodology
The statistics of marriage and divorce relay on two main sources of data:
First source: administrative records data (Ministry of Justice):
Data which are recorded and updated in the ministry regarding to numbers of marriage
contracts and divorce deeds in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Second source: Population estimates (GASTAT):
The population estimates of Saudi population are used in terms of population size and
its distribution by age, gender and administrative region.
Crude marriage rate: marriage cases per 1000 population
General marriage rate: marriage cases per 1000 population which are 15-year-old and
older.
Crude divorce rate: divorce cases per 1000 population.
General divorce rate: divorce cases per 1000 population which are 15-year-old and older.
These statistics are published annually.
