▪ It is a fast-paced and exhilarating team sport that involves
two teams of five players each competing to score points
by shooting a ball through the opposing team's
basket/ring.

▪ The game is played on a rectangular court with a hoop at

each end, situated 10 feet above the floor. Key elements
of basketball include dribbling (bouncing the ball while
moving), passing, and teamwork.
▪ It was the winter of 1891-1892. Inside a gymnasium at
Springfield College (then known as the International
YMCA Training School), located in Springfield, Mass, was a
group of restless college students and they are required to
participate in indoor activities to burn off the energy that had
been building up since their football season ended.

▪ Basketball is built into the fabric of Springfield College. The

game was invented by Springfield College instructor and
graduate student James Naismith in 1891.
▪ Basketball made its first appearance at the Olympics
as a demonstration sport at the 1904 St Louis Games.

▪ High schools and colleges began to introduce the new

game, and by 1905, basketball was officially recognized
as a permanent winter sport.

▪ Then, it has grown into the worldwide athletic

phenomenon we know it to be today.
▪ Basketball is a team sport and the game is played
between two sides. The core objective in a basketball
game is to score points by putting the ball inside the hoop
(basket) and to prevent the opposing team from doing the
same. Players use a combination of offensive and
defensive strategies to control the flow of the game,
aiming to outmaneuver their opponents and create scoring
opportunities.
❑ A basketball game starts at the centre of the court when the
ball is thrown high up by the referee and one player from each
team competing to gain possession (Jump Ball). The team
that catches the ball, or in possession, is called the offensive
team while the team not on the ball is the defensive team.

❑ The offensive team plays with the intent of getting the ball
through the opposition hoop or scoring a field goal after
moving the ball around the court by passing or dribbling the
ball, abiding by a fixed set of basketball rules.
❑ A volleyball game consists of two teams of six players
each team, separated by a net. The six volleyball court
positions are: Setter, Middle Blocker, Outside Hitter,
Opposite Hitter, Libero And Serving Specialist. Each team
tries to make the ball touch the court within the opposing
side’s playing areas before it can be returned.

❑ A team is allowed to touch the ball three times before

returning it. Volleyball matches are made up of sets,
typically three or five sets.
❑ William G. Morgan, who invented the game of volleyball in
1895.

❑ He came up with the idea so that people who found

basketball’s ‘bumping’ or ‘jolting’ too strenuous could have an
alternative physical activity to fall back on.

❑ Morgan introduced the sport called mintonette, the original

name of volleyball at the YMCA Physical Director's Conference
a year later at Springfield College, Massachusetts
❑ April 1947 saw the establishment of the Federation
Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB).

❑ Volleyball made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 1964 Games.

❑ Present: According to research, there are an estimated 800

million people playing volleyball at least once a week in over
130 countries around the world (Beeson).
❑ The objective is to score points by sending the ball over
the net, grounding it into the opponent’s court.

❑ The main idea of volleyball is to be the first team to score

ether 21 or 25 points first. A team must win by at least 2
points.
▪ Toss Coin: The team that wins the pre-game coin toss gets
the opportunity to serve the ball first. The aim of the server is
to hit the ball over the net from behind the baseline over to the
opposition’s team half to start a rally.

▪ The team that wins the toss coin will serve and opposition
team attempts to block the ball by often positioning their tallest
and most athletic players close to the net .

▪ Rally continues until one of the teams commits a fault or if the

ball hits the ground.
