When mothers eat three sizeable servings of fish each week during pregnancy, it may benefit children’s brains
for years to come, according to a large study in Spain.
Researchers followed nearly 2,000 mother-child pairs from the first trimester of pregnancy through the child’s
fifth birth day and found improved brain functions in the kids whose mothers are the most fish while pregnant,
compared to children of mothers who ate the least.
Even when women ate averaged 600 grams, or 21 ounces, of fish weekly during pregnancy, there was no sign
that mercury or other pollutants associated with fish were having a negative effect that offset the apparent benefits.
“Seafood is known to be an important source of essential nutrients for brain development, but at the same time
accumulates mercury from the environment, which is known to be neurotoxic,” lead author Jordi Julvez, of the Center
for Research in 10 Environment Epidemiology in Barcelona, said in an email.
The European Food Safety Authority recently issued a scientific opinion endorsing 150 g to 600 g of fish weekly
during pregnancy, Julvez and colleagues note in the American Journal of Epidemiology. But, the study team writes, the
effects of maternal fish consumption during development are still not well understood and more research could help to
give pregnant women a clearer guidance.
On average, the women had consumed 500 g, or three servings, of seafood per week while pregnant. But with
every additional 10 g per week above the amount, children’s test scores improved. The correlation between higher
maternal consumption and better brain development in children was especially apparent when kids were five.

A recent study shows that Thais are tending to have more tendency to become obese, as the country now
ranked second in ASEAN for the most people with obesity. Thailand has now become one of the countries with the
highest prevalence of obesity in Asia (second only to Malaysia), a head of richer countries such as the Republic of Korea,
Japan, and Singapore.
More Thais are becoming obese due to the current eating habits and data showed that Bangkokians were most
at risk of becoming obese most, while the northeast region showed the least risk of contracting the disease. The data
reflected that obesity is caused among city people who are well off and receive higher salaries than those who live in the
country side. As for the ranking of obesity in the ASEAN region, Thailand came second after Malaysia, with the highest
number of people with the disease.
As the lifestyle in Thailand rapidly changes, Thais are confronted with a new kind of plague: obesity. Thailand is
among top five Asia-Pacific nations with highest number of obese people, and by 2023 Thailand will have a whopping 21
million members of a “fat tummy network”, according to the Ministry of Public Health.
Bangkok has the highest prevalence of obesity for both males (38,8 %) and females (49,4%) followed by the
central region (33,3 % for male and 44,5 % for female), the southern region (27,4 % and 44,7%), the northern region
(27,5 % and 36,3 %) and the north-eastern region (22,5 % and 33,1 %). This obesity trend reflects the differences in
average income per capita across the regions.
Data:”Global, regional, and national prevalence of overweight and obesity”, Global Burden of Disease, The Lancet.
12. What will probably be discussed in the following paragraph of the passage?
(A) The explanation about the negative impacts of obesity
(B) The relation between the obesity trend and the average income
(C) The scientists’ points of view about the obesity trend in Thailand
(D) The conclusion of which countries have the highest rank in obesity trend
(E) The recommendation dealing with the economic condition and obesity
14. The word ‘prevalence’ in the last paragraph of the passage is similar to
(A) Ratio (D) Intensity
(B) Problem (E) Occurrence
(C) Evidence
15. Obesity problem can be avoided by living a healthy lifestyle. The word ‘ can’ in the sentence shows
(A) Probability (D) Capability
(B) Obligatory (E) Suggestion
(C) Opinion
Maybe most of us avoid drinking coffee due to its caffeine which was proven addictive and disturb some nerve
systems. However, a study was recently done to prove whether or not coffee helps prevent skin cancer, and indeed it
looks as though this may be true.
In fact, some women who drank more than three cups of coffee a day showed a 20 % lower risk of developing
basal cell carcinoma than those who drank less. The study also showed that men who drank this same amount of coffee
showed a 9% decrease in this type of cancer.
Many researchers think that caffeine is the basis of this result because those who drank decaffeinated coffee did
not show the same effects. What the study did not show was a correlation between coffee/caffeine and other types of
cancer. One researcher pointed out that the caffeine in facts kills a small number of precancerous cells which tend to
become damaged by the sun and are in the process of dividing when they are exposed to the sun.
This researcher also stated that drinking coffee to protect yourself from skin cancer may be more powerful on
the days you are going to be exposed to the sun, say when headed to the beach. There is even talk of adding coffee to
sunscreen as a way to protect. These studies are promising, but are still works in progress.
Talk to your doctor before deciding to increase your coffee intake. But knowing that enjoying a great cup of
coffee can protect you in the long run is a great feeling for many of us.
19. The word “addictive” in paragraph 1 has the same meaning with
A. Dependent B. Serious C. Built D. Independent E. Developed
20. Which group of readers that mostly get benefit from drinking coffee?
A. Pregnant women with a cup of coffee twice a day.
B. Outdoor workers who rarely drink coffee.
C. Male students who drink coffee in a spare time.

E. Adult women who drink 3 cups coffee a day.
