Tiny Woodland Animals

Amigurumi Patterns

This is a set of patterns for you to crochet a variety of tiny

woodland animals, along with a playmat that you can also use to
carry them around. I'm British, so these are a selection of animals
that are found in and around British woodlands, and which have
featured in stories and folklore throughout the years.

There are nine animal patterns - Fox, Badger, Squirrel, Rabbit,

Hedgehog, Mole, Otter, and Owl (sitting and flying versions),
ranging in size from 4 cm to 10 cm (1.5" to 4") long - and the
details to make a playmat with a tree stump and a hollow log. This
set is perfect for animal-loving children to play with (due to the size
of the animals they wouldn't be suitable for any children under
three years) but you could also make them for anyone who loves
any of these animals - they're easy to turn into key-chains or
decorations, and a group of flying owls would make a great mobile.

1
You will need:
Each animal only uses small amounts of yarn, 5g or less of each
colour, see each pattern for the colours you will need. I used double
knitting weight (DK) yarn (equivalent to 3: light yarn in the US),
but other thicknesses of yarn will work, just change hook size as
necessary.
Approx. 50g green yarn, double knitting weight, for grass play mat.
Approx. 5g light beige yarn, double knitting weight, for tree stump.
Approx. 10g brown yarn, double knitting weight, for tree stump.
Approx. 10g each of two different brown yarns, double knitting
weight, for hollow log.
Small amount of stuffing for each creature.
A small piece of thick cardboard for tree stump.
3.5mm (E) hook - use this size hook unless otherwise noted.
4.0mm (F) hook.
Tapestry needle.

Abbreviations:
ch = chain
st = stitch or stitches
ss = slip stitch
sc = single crochet (US), double crochet (UK)
dc = double crochet (US), treble crochet (UK)
hdc = half double crochet (US), half treble crochet (UK)
BLO = back loop only
FLO = front loop only
tog = together
sc2tog = decrease by working two sc together
pop = popcorn stitch (see special stitch instructions)
bob = bobble stitch (see special stitch instructions)
FO = fasten off

Special stitch instructions:

4 dc pop: popcorn stitch. Work 4 dc into 1 st, take hook out

leaving loop, put hook through 1st dc & pull loop through.

5 dc pop: popcorn stitch. Work 5 dc into 1 st, take hook out

leaving loop, put hook through 1st dc & pull loop through.

hdc-dc pop: popcorn stitch. Work 1 hdc, 3 dc, 1 hdc into 1 st, take
hook out leaving loop, put hook through 1st hdc & pull loop
through.

3 dc p-pop: pointed popcorn stitch. Work 1 dc, ch 2, work 2 dc into

same st, remove hook from working loop, insert through both loops
of first dc and pull working loop through.

2
2 dc bob: bobble stitch. YOH, insert hook into next stitch, YOH and
pull through stitch, YOH, pull through 2 loops, YOH, insert hook into
same stitch, YOH and pull through stitch, YOH, pull through 2 loops,
YOH, pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Spike stitch. Instead of working the sc into the top of the stitch in
the previous round, work it right over that stitch and into the stitch
from the round before.

General instructions:
The animals are mostly made all-in-one, with the ears, legs and
tails crocheted as you go along, apart from the tails of the rabbit
and the squirrel, and the wings of the flying owl. Work in rounds
unless otherwise stated and do not join rounds unless told to. Use a
stitch marker to mark the start of a round - a small piece of
different coloured yarn placed under the stitch at the start of the
round will do. To start a round, you can use the magic/adjustable
ring method, but I prefer (ch 2, work 6 sc into 1st ch). If you work
the 6 sc over the tail of yarn as well you can use that to pull the
hole tight. (You can find a detailed tutorial on how to do this on my
blog - http://lucyravenscar.blogspot.co.uk/ - just click on 'Starting
the first round of amigurumi' under 'Crafty links and tips').

When you make some parts (the ears of the rabbit and the front
legs of the squirrel) you will slip stitch into the round, make a chain,
work various stitches into the chain, then slip stitch back into the
same stitch on the round. On the next round, work into the first slip
stitch, take the yarn under the part, miss the second slip stitch, and
then work into the next stitch on the round.

When working sc2tog you may wish to use the invisible decrease
method. This is a bit more fiddly than the normal way of working
two sc together, but it does give a very neat finish. To do the
invisible decrease push the hook through the front loop of the first
stitch, then through the front loop of the second stitch. YOH and
pull through the two front loops. YOH and pull through the two
loops on the hook.

When changing from one colour of yarn to another work the stitch
before the change until there are two loops left on the hook. Then
use the new colour for the final yarn over hook and pull through. If
you are working a popcorn stitch in a different colour, change back
to the original colour by working the last dc of the popcorn until
there are two loops left on the hook. Then use the new colour for
the final yarn over hook and pull through. Carry on making the
popcorn stitch as normal.

3
Work through both loops of stitches unless otherwise indicated.

Right side and wrong side of crochet

These patterns have been designed to be made by crocheting with
the right side out. While there's nothing bad about crocheting wrong
side out, some elements of the pattern may not work, or look
strange. If you use the invisible decrease, this will not work with the
wrong side out. The following photos show what working in the
round looks like:

Play Mat Patterns

The animals in this set of patterns make great little pocket friends
to take anywhere, but it’s nice to have a special place for them to
play. You can make a grass mat which has a drawstring threaded
through the edge so that you can turn it into a carry bag. Crochet a
tree stump for the animals to sit on, and sew it to the centre of the
mat. You can also make a separate hollow log for the animals to
hide in.
