Step1: Remove the factory airbox to

Tools required: access the shift linkage


There are minor differences in this section for
• Ratchet with extension each model. If vehicle is equipped with an
• 13mm socket aftermarket airbox or cold air intake, you may
• 10mm socket already have easy access to the shifter and
• Philips screwdriver could skip this step.
• Wrench
• Pliers

1. Unplug the MAF Sensor 2. Using pliers or screwdriver, as needed, undo the
clamp connecting the airbox.
3. Loosen the two screws on back edge of upper 4. Unclip coolant hose from lower front corner of
airbox until threads are fully disengaged upper airbox (not applicable for all models.)

5. Disconnect air hose from engine side of upper air 6. Slowly lift off upper air box and move out of the way
box - squeeze plastic retaining ring to disconnect
(not applicable for all models.)

7. Remove bolt at back of lower airbox 8. Remove bolt at front of lower airbox

9. Tip the engine side of the lower airbox up, and You will now be able to
slide it towards the engine to remove it from the access the shift linkage
mount which is located under the fender. Put aside.
Step 2: Remove the factory
shifter as follows

(02J 5speed with ball-style connector)

1. Mark the threaded adjusting end of shifter cable


(where it meets the cable end) with paint so it can be
reconnected in the correct position.

2. Hold the shifter steady with one hand, and use your
other hand to compress the spring on the cable end to 3. Rotate the shifter clockwise and slide the shifter cable
disengage it from the shifter cable. from the cable end.

4. Using 13mm socket, remove the nut that is securing 5. Remove the clip from the side-to-side linkage

Step 2: Remove the factory

1. Using 13mm socket, remove the nut that is securing


the shifter.

2. Remove clips from shifter linkages and move cable to HINT: lift up on the locking lever in the center of the clip

Step 3: Install the HPA Short Shifter


as follows:

1. Screw the ball or pin into the desired position on the


HPA Short Shifter and tighten with wrench. (20% position
shown)

NOTE: Using the hole closest to the edge will give you a

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE:

Before installing the shifter, the spline on the


shifter must be lined up precisely with the
spline on the selector shaft. There is an index
tooth on both splines to ensure it is lined up
correctly. The index tooth on the HPA Short
Shifter is indicated by a small dimple machined
into the shifter.

The index tooth on the HPA Short Shifter is indicated by


a small dimple machined into the bottom.

The index tooth on the male spline has a WIDE tooth. 3. Carefully line up the index teeth of the splines and
slide the HPA Short Shifter into place. This requires very
little force if it is lined up properly.

5. Re-attach the cable:


Ball Style:
- snap the cable end onto the ball.
- Pull back the spring on the cable end and
reinsert the shifter cable. Carefully line up the
paint mark to ensure proper adjustment, then
release spring to lock into place.

Pin Style:
- re-clip the cable end onto the pin.

4. Re-install nut to hold shifter firmly in place. Tighten


with 13mm socket.

7. Reinstall the clip on the side-to-side linkage.

Installation is now complete


Go through the gears to ensure all gears engage
properly before reinstalling the airbox.
(Installation of airbox is the reverse of removal)
If any difficulty, refer to the VW/Audi procedure to adjust
the cables.
6. Slide the side-to-side linkage into place so it engages
with the groove on the HPA Short Shifter
