Interpersonal Factors
Some teenagers become pregnant because of peer pressure. They take influence from friends because they
are trying to fit in into the group that they are in, friends persuade them to be intimate with their partners.
Teenagers also take influence from social media platforms like Facebook, twitter, WhatsApp etc. Other
teenagers’ pressure each other to get sugar daddies as they are going to give them everything that they
want from them. These sugar daddies don’t usually have sex with protection, but they demand sex with no
protection, or they won’t anything for these teenagers anymore, so they have unprotected sex with people
that are older than them.
Institutional Factors
Here in South Africa, we do not have businesses or companies that market the use of contraceptives very
well, some do not market these contraceptives even if they are producing them or selling them. We should
have businesses that will promote the use of contraceptives even if it means having campaigns visiting
communities and teaching young children about the risks of having unprotected sex, maybe this will
decrease the level of teenage pregnancy.
Community Factors
Communities do not have people to sit down teenagers and teach them about being in a relationship or
being sexually active at a young age. Communities should have organizations with skilled workers to
come and talk to teenagers because some of them take influence from their siblings that also fell pregnant
at a young age. In this case, these people will advice the teenagers about the risks of having sex at a
young age or having unprotected sex with several partners, teach them that they may be lucky and not be
pregnant, but they may have STIs, HIV etc.
Policy Factors
The government usually provide free protection in clinics, hospitals etc. Some people choose to not take
them not knowing that the government is trying to help them. Government has a law that state that having
sex with a child younger than the age of sixteen (16) even if it was consensual, you will be arrested if
found because that is still a child. Teenagers don’t care about all that because they are enjoying the little
excitement that does not last for long, but not knowing that over time this could be detrimental to them.
