Instructions for Question No. 71 to 75 :
Read the following paragraph and answer the five questions which follows :
A researcher in intelligence and human abilities, after a careful scrutiny of various ability-
related tests, located 48 ability tests and tasks which presumably provide a comprehensive
description of human abilities. He administered these tools to a sufficiently large sample (N =
720) and obtained the inter-correlations among the 48 tests/tasks. The researcher wanted to
factor analyse these tests. Retaining unities in the diagonal spaces of the 48 × 48 correlation
matrix, the unrotated factors were extracted. Using various criteria for deciding the number of
factors for rotation including Cattell’s scree, eight factors were retained. The eight factors,
together, condensed 71 percent of variance. The eight factors were rotated by following a
suitable method and the resulting inter-factor correlation matrix was examined. Several of the
inter-factor correlations were fairly high. The second-order factor analysis was, then, carried out
which yielded two nearly orthogonal factors.
71. While factor-analyzing the 48 × 48 correlation matrix, out of the following four factor
extraction methods, which one has probably been employed in the above study ?
(1) Principal Axes Method (2) Unweighted Least Square Method
(3) Principal components Method (4) Confirmatory Factor Analysis Method
72. Cattell’s scree is a
(1) Plot of the order of factors on X axis and their covariance on Y axis.
(2) Plot of the order of factors on X axis and the actual eigenvalues of the unreduced
correlation matrix on Y axis.
(3) Plot displaying variables using the first two factors as axes.
(4) Pie diagram showing variance condensed by various factors.
73. Out of the following four factor rotation methods, which method/s can yield the above
reported results ?
(a) Varimax Rotation (b) Quartimax Rotation
(c) Oblimin Rotation (d) Promax Rotation
Codes :
(1) (c) only (2) (a) and (b) only
(3) (a) and (d) only (4) (c) and (d) only
74. The two factors are said to be orthogonal, when the angle of separation between the two
factors is
(1) 90 degree (2) smaller than 90 degree
(3) greater than 90 degree (4) in between zero to 180 degree
75. Which of the following condition/s are necessary for carrying out Second-order Factor
Analysis ?
(a) It is hypothesized that there are a few orthogonal second-order factors.
(b) The first-order factor should have been orthogonally rotated.
(c) The first-order factors should have been obliquely rotated.
(d) At least, some of the inter-factors correlations should be fairly high.
Codes :
(1) (a) and (b) only (2) (a) and (c) only
(3) (c) and (d) only (4) (a), (c) and (d) only
