I. OBJECTIVES  determine the general characteristics and classification

 of Phylum Porifera
 explain what makes phylum porifera unique; and
 summarize the importance of phylum porifera.
A. Content  The learners demonstrate an understanding of how atoms are combined with
Standards other atoms by transferring or sharing electrons.

B. Performance The learners should be able to:

Standards
Observe and describe filter-feeding in sponges and explore the ecological role of
sponges on coral reefs.

C. Learning Explain how the feeding methods of the simplest multi-cellular animals called sponges.

B. Establishing a Porifera, commonly known as sponges, represent a fascinating group of animals. These
purpose for the animals are often referred to as “pore bearers also they are multicellular but lack true tissues
and organs. Instead, they have specialized cells that perform various functions. Unlike more

complex animals, sponges do not possess complex nervous, digestive, or circulatory systems.
Sponges are remarkable organisms with unique adaptations, and their simple yet efficient
design has allowed them to thrive in diverse aquatic habitats.

Procedure:
 Divide the students into 4 groups.
 Provide each group with pictures or diagrams of different sponge species.
 Ask them to observe the structures and identify the following characteristics:
o Loosely organized cells
o Radial or asymmetrical body shape
o Presence of pores (ostia) and a central cavity (spongocoel)
o Lack of organs
o Ability to regenerate lost parts
o Holozoic nutrition (filter feeding)
o Reproduction through budding and fragmentation
