General Information
Lesson Title Identify and describe shapes such as (circles, triangles, rectangles, cubes,
cones, sphere, and squares)
Subject(s) Math
Grade, Level, and Kindergarten
Setting
Prerequisite Skills or Students should be able to recognize basic shapes and patterns.
Prior Knowledge
Learning Objective(s)
Students will be able to recognize the differences and similarities
between various shapes with 80% accuracy.
Technology
Laptop
Smartboard
Virtual pattern blocks
Language Demands
Specific ways that academic language (vocabulary, functions, discourse, syntax) is used by students to
participate in learning tasks through reading, writing, listening, and/or speaking to demonstrate their
understanding.
Language Function(s)
Students will be able to examine and interpret the different
characteristics of shapes. Students will be able to demonstrate the
differences and similarities between various shapes
Vocabulary
Triangle, square, circle, rectangle, similar, different
Discourse and/or
Syntax Students will be provided a worksheet with various word issues to compare
different shapes. Using block patterns, students will group like shapes and
explain the shapes that are like them.

Assessment
Formative
I instruct the students on various questions while I teach the lesson to assist in
adjusting the length of the lesson based on student responses. If the students
respond incorrectly. I will further clarify the concepts in the lesson if needed. If
the students respond quickly and efficiently, I will move on to more difficult
topics.
Summative
After the lesson plan, all students will receive a Shapes test (consisting of 10
questions). All students must score 80% or higher. A score of 80% would indicate
that the students have been proficient in understanding of the material.
B
I utilized the Pattern Blocks as a tool to help students visualize the shapes in this lesson.
The students are provided with pattern blocks as a visual tool for each shape. observing the
shapes enabled the students to compare and see shapes' similarities and differences more
easily. For example, a student can quickly demonstrate that a circle and a triangle have no
similarities, but a square and a rectangle do. The pattern blocks were utilized as a visual tool for
shape analysis. The pattern blocks also provided a tool for students to respond to different
questions.
C
1. the lesson plan utilizes conceptual understanding because it effectively challenges the
students to examine different shapes. The pattern blocks helped the students visualize the
various concepts of different shapes for their learning connections and enhanced learning.
2. the lesson plan encompasses problem-solving using the Shapes worksheet. Students
were instructed to complete the worksheet wherein they were instructed to identify and
explain various variations and differences of each shape.
3. The lesson plan includes procedural proficiency using the shapes test in the
independent practice portion of my lesson. Students had to examine and explain why shapes
are similar or distinct in 10 different scenarios. Students were challenged to ask for their
procedural proficiency when taking the test. The test determined that the students recalled
what was taught. The test will aid in determining if the students could apply their knowledge in
different ways to answer each question.
D
Demonstration was valuable in my lesson plan. Students were required to use patterns
to hold shapes to answer each question. I utilized visual aids and modeling to enhance the
material in my lesson. This allowed the students to improve the concepts they were learning
mentally and visually.
