Letter To RDSO

The document discusses a proposal to use parallel flange beams instead of ISMB sections for the construction of a railway overbridge in India. It provides background on the proposal, compares the properties of parallel flange beams and ISMB sections, and notes that parallel flange beams have advantages in strength, fabrication, and cost. Approval is sought from the Chief Bridge Engineer for using parallel flange beams based on these factors and prior approvals from other authorities.

No. SWR/W.352/LC-75(ROB)/MVD–JML/GDG-HG/NH-VOL-I Date: 26.06.2023

SUB: GDG – BJP Section: Proposed Construction of 4 lanes ROB in lieu of L.C.No.75 CH: 15 +000, at Rly
km.173/600-700 between Mulvad and Jumnal stations on NH-218(Span arrangement 1x48.0m Bow
string Girder Obligatory span) with subway.

Ref: 1. Letter No.KI/WS/LC-75 ROB/SWR/03 dated 06.05.2023(FN-36)

2. EE letter No.ENH/VJP/PB/A.E.Div-2/NH-218/ROB EPC/2022-23, dated 27.09.2022(FN-38)
3. This office letter dated 22.11.2022(FN-39)
4. RDSO letter No.CBS/ROB/Arch, dated 07.12.2022(FN-40)
5. RDSO letter No.CBS/DOW/Arch, dated 23.02.2018(FN-41)

With reference to above, the GAD, structural drawings and TAD for the proposed construction of
ROB in lieu of LC no. 75 at Ch: 173/600-700 in Gadag-Hotgi section have been approved. The structural
drawing for superstructure is as per RDSO/B10416/R Series for span of 48.0m. As per letter under Ref-1, M/s
Krishi Infra tech, Bangalore has requested for using NPB/Parallel flange in the Bowstring Girder (Intermediate
bottom cross beam) instead of ISMB-600 section.
Assistant General Manager of Jindal Steel and Power has mentioned the below points for the use of
NPB/parallel flange beam instead of ISMB as per Ref-1 (FN-36/3-4).
The exceptional advantages of parallel flange sections over ISMB are:
1. Higher axial load bearing capacity, section modulus and bending strength.
2. More convenient to fabricate and economical due to saving in weight.
3. Easier connection joint & flexibility of using a wide range width/thickness.
Vide letter under Ref-5, RDSO has suggested Railways to adopt these parallel flange sections
(NPB/WPB) confirming to IS-12778, wherever it fulfills the design requirements of strength and serviceability
for Railway Bridges and structures. Vide para-1 of RDSO letter, "these sections, which are more efficient, are
also available in high yield strength like E-350 etc. Use of these sections is likely to result in more efficient
Designs’’.
In this regard, comparison statement between NPB & ISMB Sections as per SP: 6(1)-1964 & IS
12778:2004 has been prepared which is as below:
Sl.
Parameters ISMB – 600x210x156.21 NPB-600x220x122.45
No.
1 Mass (kg/m) 122.6 122.45
2
2 Area (cm ) 156.21 155.99
3 H, B, tw, tf (All are in mm) 600, 210, 12, 20.80 600, 220, 12, 19
Sl.
Parameters ISMB – 600x210x156.21 NPB-600x220x122.45
No.
4 Zx (cm3) 3060.40 3068.45
3
5 Zy (cm ) 252.50 307.94
6 r1(Root radius in mm) 20 24
7 r1(Root radius in mm) 10.0 0

A letter in this regard was sent to RDSO vide FN-39 to communicate approval for the use of
NPB/WPB sections in RDSO approved BSG drawings & other structural drawings as Zonal railways has
no authority for any changes in RDSO Drawings. RDSO vide letter at FN-40 has stated that - "RDSO has
been approached for giving approval on some minor changes in drawing of 60.0m BSG. In this
connection, it is to convey that as per prevailing instructions of Railway Board vide Ref- 2 are as follows:
All additions and alteration to standard using to suit the local requirements should be approved by the
Chief Bridge Engineer of the Zonal Railways, of the necessary technical checks in their design section.”
Furthermore, SCR vide letter no. W.352/G/122/LCNo.67 dated 01.11.2022 has already given
approval for adoption of NPB/WPB (FN-36/4-4).
The structural drawing for superstructure is as per 10416/R Series. As per clause 9.1 of IS 12778
2004, material strength of steel section shall confirm to IS-2062 for mild steel and IS-8500 for medium
and high strength steel. After perusal of the above records and instruction of RDSO, the NPB sections and
ISMB sections are having similar chemical and physical properties and NPB/WPB section has better
mechanical properties.
In view of the above reasons, the proposal for use of NPB/Parallel flange Beam for the
fabrication of Bow-String Girder for the above-mentioned ROB proposals is put-up for approval of CBE
please.
