Orca Adaptation Project

Objective: INFORM THE PUBLIC!! We have been learning

about adaptations and how adaptations can help organisms
survive! We are going to be researching ONE way our Southern
Resident Orcas have had to adapt to their changing
environment in the Salish Sea. Our Southern Resident Orcas
are one of two federally protected orca populations around the world because their population
is on the decline. The Salish Sea is posing problems for our orcas survival. Our goal for this
project is to research 1 factor that is causing harm to our Southern Resident Orcas. Once you
choose which factor you would like to research you can begin to research ways our Southern
Resident Orcas have had to adapt to that factor or will adapt to that factor in the future.

Factors: CHOOSE 1
● Pollution in the Salish Sea- affecting health of Southern Resident Orcas
● Boat Noise- affecting Orcas ability to find food
● Chinook Salmon- salmon population is declining
● Reproduction- females are not having successful pregnancies or births

In this project once you have decided on the factor you will research and inform the public on
you will choose how to present your information!! The rubric below is EVERYTHING you need
to include in your project to get 100%. As you are working through the project make sure to
check off the rubric for the parts you have completed!

ORCA PSA RUBRIC

Requirements

1.Requirment 1- TITLE
What factor are you choosing that is affecting our orcas?
● Pollution
● Boat noise
● Chinook salmon
● Reproduction

2. Requirement 2- Info on Southern Resident Orcas

What is some background information on our current Southern Resident Orca population?
● What is their population number NOW.
● Are the orcas healthy? EXPLAIN. Research the Salish Sea and the pollution occuring!
● Over the past year have our orcas population decreased? How?

3. Requirement 3- Adaptation and Population

What makes our Southern Resident Orca population different from other orca pods around
the world?

4. Requirement 4- Information on how your factor is affecting our Southern Resident

Orcas.
● Is your factor affecting the health, population, life expectancy of our orcas?
● What are 3-4 key points that you've researched that are causing harm to the orcas?
● Are there any current laws protecting our Southern Resident Orcas, from your factor?

5. Requirement 5- Are the orcas adapting?

● Are the orcas adapting to the factor that you have researched?
● If so….What are 1-2 ways our Southern Resident Orcas are having to adapt to the
unhealthy environment of the Salish Sea?
● If not… what do we expect to see if the orcas are not able to adapt to their new
environment?
● How long can it take for organisms to adapt to their environment?

6. Requirement 6: Conclusion
● Write 3-4 sentences on whether you think our orcas are adapting to their environment
or not. What has caused the decline in our orca population? Is there anything we can
do to prevent further decline?
