Exercise 1 Read the words
The following words contain the same consonant sound. What is it? Read the words. Then listen to the
words on the recording. Repeat them after you hear each one.

Exercise 2 Read the tongue twisters
Read the following tongue twisters. How many words can you see that have the /p/ sound? Underline
all the /p/ sounds.

3 Polly’s pet pig eats berries and apples.
4 Benny picked pizza and a cup of tea.
5 Pandas love picnics with parrots.
6 Hoppy hops in puddles in the park.
Now listen to the tongue twisters on the recording. Then read the tongue twisters out loud with a
partner. Make sure you say all the /p/ sounds correctly.

Exercise 3 Play the game


Work in pairs. Think of a word with a /p/ sound, and write a blank for each letter in the space below.
Then write down the letters that show the /p/ sound (e.g. p _ p _ _).

Now take turns to guess the missing letters in your partner’s word. If your partner’s guess is right, write
down the letter in the appropriate blank(s). If their guess is wrong, add a body part (head, body, two
arms, two legs) to one of the drawings below.

If your partner guesses the word correctly, they score a point. If they have six wrong guesses and you
complete the body, you score a point. The first player to score three points wins the game.

dinner, the queen went out for a walk. While she was walking, she fell over and hurt her knee. ‘Help
me!’ she shrieked.

Hint
The letter ‘a’ usually makes the /C/ sound, e.g. map (see Lesson 61).
The /eI/ sound can also be spelt ‘eigh’, e.g. weight, ‘ea’, e.g. great, and ‘et’, e.g. buffet.
Be careful not to pronounce words with ‘a_e’ incorrectly, e.g. tape as /tCp/.
