Exercise 1 Read the words
The following words contain the same consonant sound. What is it? Read the words. Then listen to the
words on the recording. Repeat them after you hear each one.
My word:
Now take turns to guess the missing letters in your partner’s word. If your partner’s guess is right, write
down the letter in the appropriate blank(s). If their guess is wrong, add a body part (head, body, two
arms, two legs) to one of the drawings below.
If your partner guesses the word correctly, they score a point. If they have six wrong guesses and you
complete the body, you score a point. The first player to score three points wins the game.

Every Sunday, I visit my grandmother. She lives in Tuen Mun. I live in Causeway Bay, so I take
the number 30 bus and give the driver eighteen dollars. I get off at the last stop and take the
number 34 minibus. It’s quite quick, and it stops right in front of my grandma’s building.
Since she’s from Beijing, my grandma usually makes delicious Beijing food for dinner. Sometimes
we sit and listen to her favourite symphonies on the radio. She loves classical music, and so do I.
She can play the violin and piano brilliantly even though she’s eighty-six!
Now listen to the passage on the recording. Then read the passage out loud with a partner. Make sure
I sounds correctly.

There was once a queen whose hobby was eating. At every meal, she ate a different type of food.
Sometimes she ate roast beef and potatoes followed by a big piece of apple pie with ice cream. But her
favourite meal was grilled sardines followed by peaches, pears and kiwi fruit. One evening before
dinner, the queen went out for a walk. While she was walking, she fell over and hurt her knee. ‘Help
me!’ she shrieked.
Luckily, a knight heard her scream and carried her back to the castle. ‘What a relief!’ said the queen.
‘How can I thank you?’
‘Please, there’s no need to thank me,’ replied the knight.
‘Then let me feed you instead,’ said the queen. ‘What would you like to eat?’
Now listen to the story on the recording. Read the story out loud with a partner. Make sure you say all
if sounds correctly.

My parents went to the same primary school. They have been friends since they were eight. My
father likes to rollerblade and my mother likes to ice-skate. Mum also has ballet lessons on
Wednesdays. She does a lot of exercise because she is afraid of gaining weight.
Dad is very fast on his rollerblades so Mum is scared he will break his leg or scrape his knees.
Dad tells her not to say crazy things, but Mum is always worried when she is waiting for him to
come back from rollerblading. Dad is always very hungry when he gets back, so every Sunday
evening, we eat steak, potatoes and chocolate cake.
