Summary
Romeo discovers Juliet has died from his servant Balthazar. He buys some poison from an
apothecary and returns to Verona to visit Juliet’s tomb.
Friar John reveals to Friar Laurence that due to an outbreak of disease he was stopped from
leaving Verona. As a result Romeo did not get the message letting him know that Juliet isn’t
really dead.
Paris visits Juliet’s body to mourn her death. He is disturbed by Romeo, they fight and Romeo
kills Paris although he doesn’t realize who it is at the time.
Romeo then goes to see Juliet’s body and takes the poison and dies
Friar Laurence finds Juliet just as she is waking up but she refuses to come with him. A noise
frightens the Friar and he leaves Juliet behind. She takes Romeo’s dagger and kills herself
The Prince arrives and discovers the dead bodies in the tomb and the Capulets see Juliet
with a knife wound. Finally, Lord Montague arrives and tells us that Lady Montague has died
Capulet and Montague agree to end the feud that has taken so many lives
Questions
1. How does Romeo react when he hears of Juliet's "death" in Act 5, Scene 1?
He is devastated and decides that he doesn't have a reason to live since he thinks
that Juliet is gone forever. He decided to buy poison to later kill himself.
2. What does Romeo's transaction with the apothecary in Act 5, Scene 1 reveal
about Romeo
It shows that Romeo will immediately come to conclusions and take immediate
action on what he would like to do instead. His character in this scene displays that
he does not have a strong sense of identity and that he is hopeless.
3. After reading/ viewing Scene 2, explain how fate plays a role in the tragic end of
the play
Miscommunication can lead to big losses and finding out the truth afterwards can be
a great burden to hear.
4. Paris visits the churchyard near the Capulets' crypt in Act 5, Scene 3. What
does this scene reveal about his character?
Paris truly loved Juliet and displayed his care for her even after her death.
5. What reasons do Romeo and Juliet offer for their decisions to kill themselves in
Act 5, Scene 3? Given the time period, and patriarchal and hierarchical views
of women, do you think that their actions make sense OR did they have other
options?
Romeo, saying goodbye to Juliet after he saw with his own eyes of Juliet’s body,
decides to drink the poison that he recently bought. After Juliet’s awakening there
was a sense of anger and regret for pretending to be dead so she then takes
Romeo’s dagger and kills herself.
