Gender and Society

1. Gender Identity – Gender identity refers to a person’s inner sense of their

own gender, which may or may not correspond to the sex they were
assigned at birth. Gender Identity is a fundamental aspect of a person’s
self-concept and is often expressed through one’s behavior, dress, and
personal expression. For many people, their gender identity is consistent
with the sex they were assigned at birth (cisgender), while for others it may
differ (transgender or non-binary). Transgenders, such as a male who
does not feel comfortable identifying as a woman (transgender woman) or
female who is not comfortable identifying as a woman (transgender man).
2. Sexuality – the totality of our own experience of our sex and gender. It
includes a person’s sexual orientation, attractions, desires, and behaviors.
Sexuality is an important part of a person’s identity and can have a
significant impact on their mental and physical well-being, relationships,
and overall quality of life.
3. Sex chromosomes () – chromosomal markers that distinguish females (XX)
from male (XY) species. The Y chromosome is responsible for the
development of male characteristics, such as testes and the production of
male hormones like testosterone. The level of some hormones – chemicals
in our body that are responsible for sustaining bodily processes – are also
called as markers. For example, human males tend to have higher level of
testosterone, which is associated to sex drive and aggressions. On the
other hand, human females tend to have higher levels of estrogen and
progesterone, which are associated to lactation, menstruation, and other
female reproductive functions.

4. Intersex – individuals with composite genitals (possessing some

characteristics of both male and female genitals).

5. Give your thoughts on this:
“Everyone’s sexuality is different and deeply personal. Our capacity for
emotional and sexual attraction is diverse and complex, but there are a
few common terms or labels for us to use.
This statement discusses an individual's gender and sexual diversity. We
should always respect everyone's sexual distinctions, because each person
has their own set of abilities, talents, and, of course, behaviors that
distinguish them from others. Also, rather than judging someone based on
his or her outward appearance, we should look for someone's positive
attitude and behavior within themselves, because understanding one
another is far superior to judgment. Emotional and sexual attraction is
really diverse and complex because at this point not only the man can be
attracted to women because same gender can definitely fall in love seeing
that there are no boundaries that will set them apart. Aside from that
relationship, there are several labels or terms that we use nowadays based
on how they described their relationships. Someone might state they were
in love with each other, and whether or not they were in a relationship
with the same gender. Crush, puppy love, infatuation, SSR, union, and
many more terms can be used to describe the love attraction.
Furthermore, I believe that certain emotions are universal and felt by
everyone, regardless of our culture or background, and that these
emotions are what unite us despite the fact that we have vastly different
perspectives about our totality as individuals. Still, these differences that
we personally had is not greater than we needing each other, because we
co-exist.

6. Heteronormativity - normality of a behavior based on whether it conforms

or not to the expectations relative to one’s biological sex.
a. Heterosexuals or straight – People who are attracted to the
opposite sex.
b. Homosexual – People who are attracted to people of the same sex.
c. Bisexual – or “bi”” are people attracted to both sexes, male or
female.
d. LGBT – refers to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.
e. Asexual - People who identify as asexual experience little or no
sexual attraction to others. Asexual people, or “aces,” often identify
somewhere on a spectrum that includes their emotional, spiritual
and romantic attraction to other people.

Personal Reflection Paper on Gender and Society

Reflection:
The lessons that really caught my attention are about Gender and

Sexuality and how it has been talked about across time. We should not only look

at one side, where men have all the authority and cannot be mistreated, because

men and women are both taught in patriarchy, which is passed down from

generation to generation. Even in this day and age, men are mistreated and

violated in some form of emotional battle. Boys are brutalized or endure self-

betrayal in order to prepare them for positions of power and dominance. A boy

before becoming a man has also experienced situations in which he is unable to

express his true feelings because they are not adequate. I also believe that we

should not pass judgment on anything because there are two sides to the story.

Perhaps patriarchy is worse because of oppression, and perhaps some are fine

with the law because they somehow felt peace, or they believe that the "ruler"

does the law or the movement in order to have an organized and maintained

place because men grow for leadership, a man's mind is sharp and often thinks

logically, whereas women, on the other hand, think emotionally. We should look

at how roles and power are distributed in the house; I believe egalitarian

principles are still used; it's simply a matter of circumstances. However, limited.

My Self Reflection

1. Things that I have learned (knowledge): 2 topics (20 pts)

I have learned that Gender studies is not just for women or all about
women, it is about everyone. Because it explores how our gender roles
have changed throughout history and how it created inequalities. Back
then women are restricted to study in universities since their role was only
in domestic or in household. Back then, men only have the power,
especially pre feminism, where there’s a ruler. Through diversity, we learn
that some individuals are thought on what they should be, made by the
society around them, and also through diversity, these same individuals
are thought on how they have their own decision on what they want to be.
Gender studies let us analyze the creation and maintenance of these
gender norms so that it does not create inequalities in our social, political,
and economic spheres.

I have also learned that there are approaches in research. Qualitative and
Quantitative. These two has their own methods that can be used based on
a specific study, that can be more useful and more accurate. Some of the
method used in Qualitative are phenomenology, and hermeneutics. On
the other hand, Quantitative are through surveys or experiment.
Qualitative focuses more on the meanings created and interpretations
made by people about their own personal experiences. Quantitative, on
the other hand focuses more on characterizing a population or a sample

2. Things that I have realized and appreciated (values): 2 topics (15 pts)

I've recognized and respected those people that stay true to themselves
rather than what society tells them to be; being true to ourselves is what
makes us special. Having an individuality that is unique allows us to be
genuine with everyone we meet without hesitation. Furthermore, being
authentic to ourselves attracts others to do the same, making other people
happy. people need other people, I always think, because it's true, and we
can accomplish anything, but we must first be true to ourselves so that it
doesn't negatively impact others.

I admired women for their ability to conceive children and for their
bravery. As they have consistently told the truth and what their rights are
from the era of patriarchy to the present day with feminism and free
speech. Their boldness and willingness stood out and has influenced
generations to do anything they want as long as they adhere to the law.
Women are beautiful in every way. As a man, I cannot live without them;
they bring brightness to our faces, light up the environment, and ensure
that no one is left out; they are just magnificent, and it's tragic what some
of them have had to endure.

3. Things I have discovered and wanted more (skills): 2 topics (15pts)
I understood that there are two research approaches: qualitative and
quantitative. I wanted to expand my knowledge and abilities with these two.
I'd like to learn more about these two because it will help me as a student. I
also want to learn more about gender and sexuality ethics, because ethics is
based on principles, thus it is broad. I want to know the depth of each
principle so that I may gain a better understanding of each and how it can
help me choose the proper principle when conducting research.

6
Gender Based Violence

I. How would you prevent gender-based violence and how to support

gender equality in the Philippines? (20 pts)
The things that can be done to stop gender-based violence is to educate the
public, and this education must always begin in our own families. People who are
educated will understand how crucial it is to avoid harming or acting
inappropriately toward one another because of their gender. Even if we can't
make people accept the other gender, it is much better if they just comprehend
since information and education always win out in the end when someone does
anything causing harm to someone. Additionally, by promoting positive
masculinity and femininity, resolving power inequalities in relationships, and
encouraging respectful and equitable partnerships

To support gender equality, the first thing to do is to promote gender

equality through education. This includes educating individuals about the
importance of gender equality, consent, healthy relationships, and respectful
communication. Second, to show respect to one another. Because showing
respect to one another is making them understand that not everybody they met
have the same intentions, showing respect influences one another.

II. What is RA 9262? (15 pts)

The Republic Act 9262, or the Nti-Violence against Women and their Children
(Anti-VAWC) Act of 2004, is a result of the strong advocacies on women’s human
rights in the country. This law was deemed to be a significant victory for all
Filipino women as it was based on the right of women not to suffer abuse,
discrimination, and violence in their respective relationships.

7
Important features of the law include:

1. Four kinds of violence against women and children are defined – the law
defined four kinds of violence-physical, psychological, sexual, and economic- in
its effort to encompass all types of abuses inflicted to women and their children;
2. VAWC is a public crime- the crime is perpetrated not only against a single
individual, but against the entire society, thus, anyone who has personal
knowledge of the abuse, violence, or discrimination can file a complaint;
3. Protection orders can be issued against the perpetrator- upon filing the
case, the victim-survivor or anyone who has personal knowledge can apply for a
protection order to enforce the distance between her and the perpetrator; and
4. Stronger community mechanisms to respond to cases- various government
agencies are mandated to aptly respond or formulate mechanisms to respond to
reported cases of VAWC immediately.

I. What are five causes of gender-based violence in the community?

Explain. (15 pts)
Lack of physical Security- lack of physical security can cause men to go reckless,
resulting into violence against women or girls.
Poverty- Women and girls living in poverty are more vulnerable to sexual
exploitation, including trafficking.
Cultural norms – because it frequently assumes that men are assertive, in charge,
and domineering, while women are submissive, meek, and dependent on men for
support. Therefore, when men are portrayed as being superior to women, it may
result in GBV because men have the power to do so or because they have the
capacity to do so.
Norms and practices – Men are expected to exert coercive control over women in
many parts of their lives, and because of these norms and behaviors, men
continue to engage in gender-based violence.
Unequal status of men and women Due to males’ inherent superiority, women
frequently must do what they are told by men, which might result in violence
because a man may become enraged if a woman disobeys him.

My Self-course Reflection
As a college student, understanding about Gender and Society helps me better
understand why we have various perspectives of how wonderful or horrible
things were when some people discuss these topics. Personally, I was struggling
to grasp how we, as individuals, have various perspectives on other people.
Learning about gender identity first helps me understand why such people do
things or make it known to society or in the environment that they are what they
do; some people are not just a "man" or a "woman" because they belong to
something else; they have their own gender identity. Because gender is a socially
constructed role, I contend that we should only follow what society portrays or
shows about men as having traits such as strength, aggression, and dominance,
while women are associated with traits such as nurturing, emotional intelligence,
and domesticity. However, since learning about these, I believe that it is
inappropriate and should not be how one should act simply because they believe
that those are the only things that they should do. It just serves to limit individual
opportunities and choices in life. Gender has a large impact on society and can
be seen in numerous aspects of life, including education, jobs, politics, and
relationships. Gender and society are inseparably connected, and comprehending
the complexity of gender is critical to achieving a more equal and just world. I
believe that by challenging traditional norms and fostering tolerance and
diversity, we can create a culture that is more tolerant and supportive of all
individuals, regardless of gender identity. I've also discovered that sex
chromosomes identify a person's biological sex. Males are considered to have a
set of XY, whereas females have a set of XX. It was disheartening to think that
what happened in the past is still, in some ways, perpetuating patriarchy.
Patriarchy, whose major goal is to have "men" as the leaders in all aspects, and
women can't be since what she's meant to do is stay at home and do all kinds of
housework. They are unable to make decisions or do anything else. Women may
now make their own decisions, thanks to feminism, and they are no longer
imprisoned. The world would be horrible without love, the greatest sensation of
all. Unfortunately, it is difficult for some people, and some people do not receive
love, which is unfortunate. The idea of love is always beyond, having different
love languages and actually applying them to specific people, it's just lovely, it

9
lights up everything. Everything will fall apart if there is no love. Respect, I believe,
is a component of love, which is why, despite our differences, we continue to love
one another, because it is a universal phenomenon. Learning the Political-legal
Perspective in Gender and Sexuality makes me more aware of gender-based
violence and laws that protect women and children who are frequently victims. It
benefited me in acquiring knowledge that I can apply in the future. When I
studied Gender and Society, I became much more conscious of and informed
about people.
