ENG 111: Writing and Inquiry
Essay Assignment #2
Textual Summary

Assignment:
In 3-4 pages (1200 word minimum), you must summarize and connect two of the sources you will use for your
documented research paper (Essay #3). One reading must be from our course readings on Blackboard. The
second reading is one from an outside source—an online database, a textbook for another class, etc. Your
thesis should reflect the topic you have chosen and how the texts connect. Please note you must do the
following:
 Discuss your research topic as presented in the two texts in your introduction (1 paragraph)
 Summarize your course reading’s main points (2-3 paragraphs)
 Summarize the second text’s main points (2-3 paragraphs)
 Connect the two essays (1 paragraph)
 Reach a conclusion based on your evaluation of the texts in reference to your topic (1
paragraph)

*You will need to include summaries, short quotes, and one long quote using MLA 9 documentation.

Organization:
I. Introduction:
a. The beginning of your essay should introduce the topic and the texts you’ve chosen, which
would include locating (but not necessarily restating or including all) the following from the
biographical notes:
i. the author’s name,
ii. the credentials of the author (include only the qualifications of the author to write
about this topic),
iii. the kind of work (essay, excerpt, speech etc.),
iv. the title of the work,
v. the date of the writing, and
vi. where it was first published.
b. Next, include any other background you want to provide regarding the topic (assume a college
level audience)
c. State your thesis.
II. Body:
a. First Summary: write a detailed summary of your course reading. Your summary should not
comment on the essay or respond to any of the points made in it; it should merely restate the
essay in multiple paragraphs.
b. Second Summary: write a detailed summary of your second text. Your summary should not
comment on the essay or respond to any of the points made in it; it should merely restate the
essay in multiple paragraphs.
c. Textual Connection: briefly discuss how the two texts connect.
III. Conclusion: Conclusions based on your evaluation of the texts.
IV. Works Cited: After the final page of your essay there must be a Works Cited page in which you will—
using proper MLA format—document both texts you’ve chosen. You must include photocopies or
printouts of the researched source with your final draft.

V. Grammar: Avoid word choices that are too conversational. Expression of ideas should be formal, so
please do not use contractions. Avoid second person (you, your, and commands) and first person (I,
we, us, me, my, etc.) constructions. The focus must remain on the issue and the writers until you reach
your conclusion.

Constraints:
 Essays must be in 3-4 pages (1200 word minimum typed), double spaced, in 12-point font, Times New
Roman. Essays that do not meet the required length will be severely penalized (even ones that are a
little bit short!).
 Put your name, the class and section, my name, and the date all in the upper left-hand corner.
 Insert a header with your last name and the page number in the upper right-hand corner.
 Due Dates Check Course Schedule
Drafts:
 For Rough Drafts, you will need to submit a minimum of 3 pages in order to receive feedback and peer-
review credit.

Grading: Your grading rubric and criteria are on another document. Please make sure to review it before you
start drafting.
