Founded in 1881 as the original `redbrick’, the University of Liverpool is one of the UK’s leading research
institutions with an annual turnover of £480 million, including £133 million for research. Liverpool is
ranked in the top 1% of higher education institutions worldwide and is a founding member of the
prestigious Russell Group, comprising the leading research universities in the UK.
In the results of the independent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), The University of Liverpool
has reinforced its place as a world-leading research institution. As part of this national exercise to assess
the quality and impact of research at every UK University, 91% of the University’s research was classed as
world-leading or internationally excellent. Nine Liverpool research units achieved a top ten ranking for
their outstanding impact and 94% of the University’s research impact is now considered ‘outstanding’ or
‘very considerable’, recognising the wide-reaching benefits of Liverpool experts’ work in areas of health,
culture, policy, business, sustainability and more.
With a campus in the heart of the warm and welcoming city of Liverpool, the University is driving the city’s
knowledge economy through close collaboration with fellow universities, industry, and the NHS, helping
the Liverpool City Region compete in the global business world. Here you can work with us to conduct
research that has a positive impact on people and the planet, to share ideas with peers, with business, and
beyond, to further widen your worldview within our international network of academic partners, and to
prepare to be a true global citizen; we can help you to make a real difference to the wider world.
Faculty Background:
The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS) is one of the UK’s leading centres for health and life science
research and education and is the only Russell Group University to offer scientific and clinical education
that spans the full range of biosciences, clinical, medicine, health sciences, dentistry, and veterinary
sciences. As a Faculty of experts in a broad range of health and life science disciplines, we aspire to
positively impact the health and well-being of our global citizens. We work in collaboration with our
partners to ensure our research has significant, tangible outcomes for society.
This Silver Athena SWAN award holding Faculty has over 2,350 staff, 7,200 undergraduates, and 3,900
postgraduate students who, together with many alumni and partners, are helping to deliver research that
addresses the most prevalent challenges impacting society today through a 'One Health' approach to our
research, recognising the connection between human, animal and environmental health.
The Faculty aims to be sector-leading in terms of innovation, research, education, and clinical impact,
which comprises of;
• Five Faculty-level enabling Directorates provide coordination, expertise, and dedicated professional
support to underpin our education, research, clinical activity, and state-of-the-art technology and
facilities.
• Four academic Institutes combine and complement our existing areas of strength in both teaching
and research.
• Faculty Management Office (FMO) which is positioned to offer guidance and support for all of the
administrative, strategic, and communications services for the Faculty, staff, and students
• Our vision is to enhance collaboration and foster interdisciplinary alliances, allowing better
integration of research and research-led teaching, increasing the critical mass focusing on areas of
research with high impact and lasting benefit to society.
The Faculty is committed to fostering the personal and professional development of its research staff by
offering an optimal research environment and is signed up to The Concordat to Support the Career
Development of Researchers . As part of the The Technician Commitment the Faculty recognises the
contributions of it’s technical staff and supports their development.
Institute Overview:
The Institute of Systems, Molecular, and Integrative Biology (ISMIB) assists in integrating research into the
biology of life across a magnitude of scales, from single molecules through to whole organisms. Using
cutting-edge and world-leading multi-omics technologies, our research answers impactful biological
questions. A key focus of our research is on delivering novel therapeutics with reduced toxicity to patients
via an improved understanding of biological mechanisms. Our work spans the atomic structure of
molecules, signalling cellular pathways and the detection of abnormal cellular phenotypes.
We bring cutting-edge research into all areas of biology, at all scales. Our research and teaching uncover
new discoveries in biological and biomedical systems. We're tackling important societal problems, from
improving crops, to creating new diagnostic tools and therapeutic interventions across many diseases.
Led by Professor Mike Speed, the School ensures our students are exposed to cutting-edge technologies
and internationally renowned research centres in infection, cancer, and multi-omic approaches.
In collaboration with the other Institutes across the Faculty, we cover all Life Science disciplines, from
Biochemistry to Zoology integrating world-leading research and knowledge.
Led by Professor Patrick Eyers, our research brings together biochemistry, cutting-edge technology, and
multi-omics approaches to study the chemistry of life. From proteins to complex biological systems,
we provide vital links between both basic and translational research.
Led by Professor Sonia Rocha, our research provides a better understanding of how cellular
communication systems control the behaviour of cells, tissues and organisms. The results of our research
help to inform new therapeutic strategies for a wide range of diseases.
Led by Professor Michael Schmid, our research bridges discovery science to therapeutic applications in
cancer patients. Our mission is to optimise effective collaborations between scientists and clinicians to find
better ways to detect and treat cancer.
Led by Professor Reecha Sofat, our internationally excellent multidisciplinary research spans life, physical
and clinical sciences focussed on investigating mechanisms of drug efficacy and toxicity. Our aim is to
develop new and improve existing therapies for the benefit of patients.
The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences understands the positive benefits of employing a diverse range of
talented people and are committed to creating a diverse environment by ensuring that all qualified
applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, colour, gender identity, or
expression, sexual orientation, national origin, disability or age. Working together, as a community, we
will create an even more inclusive environment and culture, which aims to maximise the potential of our
staff and students.
