Class Activity: Functions of a Computer

Question 1: What are the four main functions of a

computer?

Data Input: Data input is the primary function of every computer. Keyboards, mice, and
styluses are the input devices used to complete this task. Data entry is aided by voice
dictation software, body gesture peripherals such as Kinect, and manual input. Networking
interfaces and secondary storage media are further options for data input. The data entered
depends on the application software type being used. Word processing programs, for
example, work with simple alphanumeric data, whereas photo editing programs work with
pictures. Spreadsheets, databases, and other computerized work areas can all accept data
input. Additionally, automation and robotics can intelligently feed data into computers locally
and remotely.

Data Processing: Data processing is a computer's core function. Before turning raw data into
meaningful information, it must be altered. The microprocessor, sometimes referred to as the
central processing unit or CPU, is the "brain" in charge of processing data. These days,
computers combine microprocessors and graphics processing units (GPUs) to form
accelerated processing units or APUs. Strong graphics processing is now possible in addition
to standard arithmetic and logical calculations thanks to this merger. Additional essential
components of data processing are static random-access memory (SRAM) and dynamic
random-access memory (DRAM).

Information Output: The microprocessor's manipulation of raw data results in an output that
is intended for distribution for practical uses. Display hardware is used for information
output, enabling users to see processed data instantly. Users can access the processed data
through this step whether it is printed on paper or displayed on a screen. Other
communication channels, such as email, are also used as information output channels.

Data and Information Storage: Both unprocessed and processed data are stored on computers.
Data is stored for later use on digital storage devices like solid-state drives, hard disk drives,
and other media. Data storage ensures that information is available for use in the future,
whether it is for storing files, documents, photos, or videos. For effective retrieval and
utilization, stored data must be properly managed and organized.

Question 2: How do computers impact our daily lives?

One of the important systems in our society that computers positively impact is the education
system. This is because computers manage to give valuable information regarding a specific
topic that a student wishes to know in a matter of seconds. Another positive impact that
computers have is that they provide easy access to online shopping, banking, and reservations
on an online platform. This would save a lot of time and effort for consumers. However, there
is another aspect of computers that acts like a double-edged sword, and that is social media.
In a positive view, social media provides individuals with a way of communicating with other
people around the globe with ease. This way, they could understand the ways of many
cultures and perspectives of many people. In a negative view, social media could make
people addicted to it. In an extreme case, people could become so addicted to the point where
an actual social life with real people would not be taken into consideration by the social
media addicts.
